Undead Race?! Zane was utterly shocked. Can players actually switch to the Dark Faction? The level of freedom in this game is insane!

But—they would never let that happen!

“Stay back!” Starry had just broken free from the Bone Prison when she noticed Zane’s intent and shouted anxiously.

As much as she hated to say it, the harsh truth was that in a battle of this scale, a low-health Zane couldn’t contribute much. If he got caught in even a stray attack, he’d be sent back to town—or worse, forcibly turned into an Undead Wolf. Right now, Starry was practically dancing on the edge of a blade.

Zane understood what he needed to do. He turned and ran back to Elna’s side.

Revert!

At last, he returned to his long-missed human form.

The mysterious man smirked with amusement. “Even the Gray Wolf was a transformed human? You people are getting more and more interesting. Little girl, dodging forever won’t save your companion~ Now, show me your full strength and entertain me!”

“Hmph, as you wish!” The moment she spoke, an overwhelming force surged around Starry. It was as if she had become an entirely different person.

That was—Star Mark!

Starry raised her Autumn Moon Sword high into the air. The sword’s glow transformed into a towering pillar of blue light, its energy so immense it seemed as if it would pierce the very heavens!

However— just a few seconds later, before she could even unleash her attack, the pillar of light suddenly dissipated on its own.

Failed again!

Not only that, but Starry looked as if she had exhausted an immense amount of energy. Sweat poured down her face, and her complexion turned deathly pale.

“I thought I’d get to see something amazing, but it turns out you still haven’t mastered it,” the mysterious man said, sounding almost disappointed.

“It’s still… not enough…” Starry murmured.

“Elna! This is bad—wake up!” Zane shook her shoulders, trying to rouse her.

“Big Brother abandoned me… Big Brother abandoned me…” From the moment she had broken down, Elna had been repeating those words like a broken doll.

“Damn…” Without much of a choice left—it was time for drastic measures! “I’m right here! Look, your brother came to save you!” Zane shamelessly declared.

“B…Brother?” For the first time, Elna’s vacant eyes regained a hint of focus.

“That’s right! And I even brought an amazing big sister to help fight off the bad guys! You’ll be safe soon!” Seeing a glimmer of hope, Zane quickly doubled down on his act.

But Elna shook her head. “My brother… doesn’t look like this.”

Damn it, this girl is sharp.

“That’s because… your brother thought he wasn’t handsome enough before, so he went to the best doctor for cosmetic surgery! See? Doesn’t he look way cooler now, Nana?” Zane deliberately softened his voice, making it sound as affectionate as possible.

The moment she heard the name “Nana”, Elna’s eyes welled up with tears—even though, logically, there shouldn’t have been any moisture left in her body.

“Brother… is it really you? Have you come to take Nana home?”
“Of course! But first, we have to defeat the big bad guy!”

No… not just Star Mark. Even higher-tier martial skills like Gale Slash are completely unusable.

It felt like she still remembered how to use them, but an invisible level restriction was holding her back.

“I’m bored now.” Those three words sealed Starry’s fate.

The mysterious man’s expression grew serious.

Prison of the Restless Souls!

Not good! This is a forbidden curse—a full-scale undead magic that would engulf the entire map!

“…” Starry had no way to dodge. She had failed too many skill attempts, and the backlash had drained her stamina to the limit. Against the incoming wraiths, she would be devoured—and then turned undead.

Elna, who had placed her trust in us, would also suffer the consequences. And Zane… he’d be forced to become one of them as well. Hadn’t I experienced this kind of despair countless times already?

Starry closed her eyes.

Starry! Starry!! Use Heartpiercer! Zane’s voice echoed desperately in her mind.

Heartpiercer…? No… I already tried it before. It failed.

Trust me! Hurry, there’s no time left!

Even though she thought it was pointless, the moment she heard Zane’s voice, her body moved instinctively.

Because—he was another version of herself.

Across a twenty-yard gap, Starry’s crimson eyes were bloodshot from relentless overexertion. She had already pushed her body past its limit—again and again!

In theory, Heartpiercer condensed sword energy at the very tip of the blade, disguising a lethal thrust with a seemingly ordinary attack—a technique designed to destroy an enemy’s heart in a single strike.

But—as she attacked, no sword energy formed.

As expected… it still failed.

“Invoke—Spirit’s Heart!”

That was… Elna’s voice!

A strange sensation washed over her, as if something within her had broken free. In one fluid motion, Starry executed Heartpiercer. The invisible sword energy, infused with a cold killing intent, tore through the wraiths and reached the mysterious man.

He smirked. It was as if he welcomed Starry’s attempt, curious to see if she had any more surprises up her sleeve. He didn’t seem to realize the impending danger.

“You—” Just as he was about to speak— “Urgh!” A mouthful of black blood spewed from his lips. Slowly lowering his gaze, he saw it— His heart had been completely pierced! And his strength… was rapidly draining away.

His body grew colder with every passing moment, his voice reduced to a faint whisper.

No… I can’t die yet. There are things I still have to accomplish. No matter what happens… I have to survive!

Ssssshhhhh…

His body dissolved into a swarm of bats, scattering in all directions as they fled into the darkness.

Starry’s vision blurred—and then everything went black.

Zane, who had assumed control of Starry’s motionless body, found himself completely paralyzed. Damn it… just how much did you overexert yourself, idiot?!

But he had no time to worry about Starry. Because—Elna was growing weaker by the second.

Unlike Starry, who had merely overdrawn her stamina, Elna’s undead body was losing its source of power. With the mysterious man gone, whatever had been sustaining her was rapidly fading. When that last trace of strength disappeared… she would die.

Elna’s withered hand gently touched Zane’s cheek.

“Th…ank… you… I… can… finally… be… free…” Her voice was weak, broken. “Even though… you’re not my brother… I’m… glad. You didn’t… shun me… for… being a monster.”

“…”

“My brother… does he… still remember me?” She answered her own question with a sorrowful whisper. “…No… he wouldn’t… would he?”

“…” Zane had no idea what to say. Then—he had a flash of inspiration. If he used that… maybe… just maybe…

“Elna,” Zane said, his voice steady. “Do you want to see your brother again?”
Elna weakly shook her head. “I… don’t… have… time… left…”
“Do you want to see him or not?!” Zane sharpened his tone.
“…Y-Yes!”

“Then relax. Trust me. I don’t know if it’ll work, but—I believe in you. You created Wishkeeper, didn’t you? The ability that is rumored to bring back the dead.”
“I… can’t… use it… on… myself…” Elna’s voice faltered. She was at her absolute limit.

“Trust me! I will save you!” Zane tore off his necklace. The necklace’s power had always been a mystery—the very artifact that had allowed him and Starry to reach this point. And now—at the very end—it was time to bet everything on its power.

Would Soul Transfer even work on an undead? Zane had no idea. But he didn’t care! He aimed the necklace directly at Elna and activated the special skill.

Just like with the Gray Wolf, wisps of white smoke were drawn out from Elna’s body and absorbed into the ruby gemstone of the necklace. The ruby’s color fluctuated, shifting between white and violet.

This step… It’s different from before. Is Elna going to be okay?

Ten minutes passed. The ruby’s glow finally dimmed, and within it, the faint image of a blonde girl slowly emerged.

This is…!? Is this Elna… before she died?

The white smoke was then released, flowing back into Elna’s damaged body.

“This feels… strange…” Elna murmured.

There was no time to respond—Zane only cared that she was still alive. Without hesitation, he activated the necklace’s secondary skill.

Shapeshift!

The necklace erupted with blinding white light, completely swallowing Zane. As the radiant energy swirled violently, his form began to change. When the light finally faded, standing there was—

A girl with smooth golden hair, large emerald-green eyes, and delicate features. Her lips were rosy, her skin flawless. If not for the eerie bone armor set she wore, she could have been a character straight out of an anime.

Elna’s lips parted slightly, stunned.

Zane had no time to explain—he quickly checked his status screen. He needed to find a revival skill—fast! Elna didn’t have much time left!

There! That’s the one—Invoke: Revival!

Zane felt his entire MP pool drain instantly—an unbearably hollow sensation. Then again, he hadn’t had much MP to begin with.

A wave of pure blue energy rippled outward, floating toward Elna.

Elna bit her lip—as if she couldn’t believe what she was seeing.

The energy passed through her. Wherever it touched, her decayed skin regained life, turning smooth and unblemished—like that of a newborn child. The sinister aura that once surrounded her vanished completely.

The process was agonizingly slow. Zane was shocked—this resurrection skill was insanely powerful! It could even bring an undead back to life!

Half an hour later, the blue energy fully dispersed, its task complete.

“I… Uwaaah…!” Elna suddenly lunged forward, embracing the girl in front of her—her mirror self. “Waaaaah! This isn’t a dream, right?!” Tears streamed down her face.

“Nope,” Zane said gently, patting her head. “This is real. You’re back to normal.”

…Though, hearing two identical voices at the same time was pretty weird. It felt like listening to twin sisters talking.

Finally, Zane let out a deep breath of relief. With the mysterious man gone, it seemed that the communication lock on the map had also been lifted.

Zane glanced at his friend list—it was flooded with unread messages.

Shiu: Zane, did you hear? The Rainflower Guild just moved into Wynwater City.

Shiu: They got into a fight with some solo players and knocked them all back to Level 10.

Shiu: I think their IDs were something like Nangong Fort and Zanny’s Cousin? Sounds kinda familiar…
