Let’s just stuff it in the inventory for now.

The quest rewards and experience from the Level 13 Gray Wolves pushed Zane to Level 11, while Starry still needed 32% more experience to level up.

After reaching Level 10, the required experience for leveling up had drastically increased. This meant that to continue leveling efficiently, they would need to keep challenging tougher magibeasts.

Most areas of the city had already been explored, and there weren’t any new quests available for now. It was likely due to it still being the first day of the server, meaning more quests might only appear the next day.

Glancing at the quest log, only two quests remained unfinished. One was the shared S-rank quest, “Find Harrison’s Daughter,” and the other was Starry’s S-rank class advancement quest, “An Audience.”

There were no leads on the missing person quest. With so many NPCs in the city, they couldn’t just question every single one. It would be better to wait until they encountered a high-ranking NPC and ask them directly. As for the class advancement quest… Sheen had mentioned that fine wine could be used as a means to attract the hidden mentor.

Zane had already checked the taverns and general stores, but they only sold regular rice wine. The higher-end options, like Vintage Reserve Whiskey or Fine Aged Brandy, were considered premium items, costing hundreds of gold coins—far beyond what was affordable at this stage.

“Chief, I feel that my strength is still lacking. I hope you can grant me some trials to temper myself.” With the mindset of giving it a shot, Zane transformed into a Gray Wolf once more, carrying Starry on his back as they sought out the Gray Wolf Alpha for a potential quest.

“It is good that you have such ambition, but…” The Alpha hesitated.

“Please, speak freely! My pet is incredibly powerful—there’s nothing she can’t—” Zane suddenly felt an intense pressure on his stomach.

Stop pressing down! I’m dying!

“Let me tell you a story, young one.” The Gray Wolf Alpha sighed. “This Grayridge Plains was once the exclusive domain of our Gray Wolf clan. However, a year ago, a mysterious figure in a black robe appeared. Using dark necromantic magic, he raised an army of skeletal undead. Even our fallen brethren were resurrected as mindless Undead Wolves, stripped of reason and reduced to nothing more than pawns following that sinister being’s commands.”

“At that time, I was just an ordinary Gray Wolf. Our previous Alpha fought bravely, yet was ultimately overrun and torn apart. He too was resurrected as an Undead Wolf and enslaved as the necromancer’s mount. Then, strangely enough, instead of continuing his conquest, the robed figure dug out an underground passage and disappeared into it, taking the entire undead horde with him. The entrance was sealed by an eerie tomb, pulsating with powerful, terrifying magic. Ever since then, the northwestern part of the Grayridge Plains has been a forbidden zone.”

The Alpha swallowed hard before continuing.

“I witnessed the battle firsthand, and it remains a burden on my soul. But I know that with my current strength, I stand no chance against those cursed undead.”

“I have not spoken of this to anyone in a long time. But I see great potential in you. If you continue to grow stronger, you may surpass me one day. When that time comes… avenging our fallen brethren will no longer be an impossible dream.”

The Alpha’s voice carried the weight of sorrow and experience, a reflection of hardships endured.

“…”

So the Gray Wolves actually had their own deep storyline?

“Understood. I’ll keep an eye on that place. In that case, Chief, I’ll continue honing my… human-taming skills?”

“Yes, go forth, young one!”

Zane didn’t dare accept the quest without first confirming the enemy’s level.

Come on, it has already been a whole year—who knew what that mysterious figure had been up to in that underground passage?

More importantly, this is critical information. If I hadn’t transformed into a Gray Wolf, I would never have learned that there is an undead army lurking right next to Wynwater City!

As he was deep in thought, someone suddenly called out to him.

“Emberveil!”

Who was that? There aren’t any players nearby.

“It’s the wolf calling you,” Starry pointed out.

Looking closer, he indeed spotted a wolf standing ahead.

Gray Wolf Mick (Elite)
Grade Rare
Level 14
HP 1500
Attack 50-60
Defense 30
Skills Call for Reinforcements, Sprint
Description An elite among the Gray Wolves, possessing a higher status within the pack.

“The chief told you about that matter, didn’t he?” Mick said.
“You mean the Forbidden Zone?” Zane asked, puzzled.
“Yes. I came to warn you—don’t think that taming a human is some kind of great accomplishment…” Mick’s tone was heavy.

A vein twitched on Starry’s forehead.

“In the face of that demon, no one—no one—has any power to resist. You can only watch helplessly as you’re turned into an undead slave,” Mick growled. “Half a year ago, I personally witnessed a Wishkeeper pass through that tomb into the underground passage. They never came back.”

That… sounds pretty terrifying. Also, what is this Wishkeeper thing? Some kind of hidden class?

“In any case, never go near the Forbidden Zone. If you provoke that demon’s wrath, we’re all doomed.” Mick’s voice was cold and firm.

Is it really that bad? Game mechanics wouldn’t allow early-stage monsters to be too overpowered—otherwise, players wouldn’t even have a chance to fight back.

Still, Zane nodded in acknowledgment. “Understood. I won’t go there.”

Hah… as if!

After delivering his warning, Mick left.

Something about him felt off… Zane glanced toward the northwest. He hadn’t thought much of it before, but now that he was paying attention, that area felt eerily sinister.

“The Alpha was telling the truth,” Starry suddenly spoke up. “There’s a lingering presence of hatred and resentment there. If you go unprepared, you’ll end up bringing some serious trouble upon yourself.”

She made it sound like some kind of edgy anime prophecy, but Zane knew Starry actually had the ability to perceive these things.

“I can hear you,” Starry said, deadpan.

Orz, I was wrong!

“Prepare to die—take this! Nine Phantom Bone Claw!”

“Awoooo—!”

“Wishkeeper?” The moment those words left his mouth, Sheen slammed her hands down on the table, her expression sharp and intense. Among the high-ranking NPCs they’d encountered so far, she was one of the more familiar ones. But they never expected her to react so strongly to just hearing those three syllables.

Both Starry and Zane were startled by her reaction.

“…I apologize,” Sheen exhaled, regaining her composure.
“It’s fine… we only heard it mentioned by someone else,” Starry replied.
“If you’re really that curious, I suppose I can explain a little,” Sheen said with a sigh. “Wishkeepers aren’t some inherited or traditional class. It was created by a single prodigy—a girl named Elna.”

“She shook the entire Empire when she first emerged. Because, no matter who you were—as long as your body was intact and your death was unnatural—she could bring you back to life.” Sheen paused for a moment before continuing, her tone heavy. “But her abilities didn’t go unnoticed. Even those from the Dark Faction caught wind of what she could do. Unfortunately…” she sighed again.

“Half a year ago, Elna vanished without a trace. Some believe she was assassinated by envious forces within the Empire. Others think the Dark Faction got to her first. But in the past six months, the world has gradually forgotten her name. I didn’t expect anyone to bring it up again.”

That means… Elna had most likely discovered something unusual about the Grayridge Plains. And in the end, she didn’t make it out.

“Oh, and one more thing.” Sheen lifted her teacup, taking a sip before casually adding, “Never mention this in front of General Aegis. Otherwise… you’re on your own.” She put her cup down. “Anything else?”
