Tears spilled down Beatrice’s cheeks as she looked up at Irvine.

“T-That child… Despite being bitten and played with… it still ran… It… It’s just so…”
“Bibi! Get a hold of yourself! Damn it! Can’t we do something about this?!”

Irvine gripped her shoulders and shouted quietly. But just then, a black spear sliced across Irvine’s cheek, narrowly missing, and shot forward like a blur of darkness towards the other children.

“Charles! Tomas!”

Corin’s scream echoed through the air. The black spear had pierced straight through two younger students, Charles Beaumont of the second level and Tomas Ligoti of the third level, before vanishing into nothing. Cries and screams erupted from the children nearby, filling the area with chaos and terror.

“You vermin!” William deflected another spear with his shield and tried to cut it down with his sword, but in that brief moment, a Shadow Dog lunged at him, giving him another new wound.

“Kelm eigo spelo eude. Pierce! Stake Gun!” Mia’s voice rang out, and the ground responded. Thick roots burst up from the soil, forming into spear-like tips and shooting out toward the Shadow Dog circling William.

The beast reacted instantly, dodging away from William just in time. But Carl didn’t let it go.

“Kelm eigo spelo eude. Shoot through! Fire Bullet!” Carl unleashed a blazing projectile that struck the Shadow Dog and consumed it in a sea of flames. “Good!” Carl clenched his fist, a momentary smile spreading across his face.

“That flame magician is kind of annoying.”
“Yeah. He seems to be alone. Maybe we should go after him first.”

As the two vampires spoke while watching Carl, several black spears erupted from the ground beneath Doug’s feet. They shot forward in an instant, impaling Carl’s body one after another.

“Blugh…?!” Carl was thrown back by the impact, blood spurting from his wounds as he collapsed violently to the ground.

“Carl?!” Mia, who had been casting spells nearby, screamed and rushed to his side. But before she could reach him, several black spears surged toward her as well. One spear tore through her, ripping a massive chunk from her side and blasting her backward.

“Uhh?!” Mia’s body tumbled across the ground before slamming into a piece of rubble, finally coming to a stop. Although her corset-style leather armor offered some protection, it was no match for the black spears, which had ripped through it effortlessly and dug into her side. Blood poured freely from the gaping wound in her side, and she was growing paler with each passing second. Her body began to convulse slightly.

“Damn it! Mia! How did this happen?! Mia!” Willie rushed to her side and immediately began casting a healing spell, but the bleeding wouldn’t stop.

Eliza pointed at Mia and asked Doug with a glance, “And that one?”
“Why not? It’s annoying to let those who can use magic live.” He said, shrugging his shoulders.

“Miaaaaa!!!” While thrusting her spear through a gap in the partially destroyed stone wall Beatrice had conjured, she struck at a Shadow Dog that was trying to slip past William’s flank. Dana shouted towards Mia, who was currently in the backlines.

“She’s fine! She is holding on!” Willie answered while placing his hands on Mia to try and heal her.

“Mia!” Beatrice, who was tending to Carl’s wounds, looked over at Mia, her teeth clenched and lips drawn tight in worry.

“Damn it! We’re shorthanded!” Irvine growled in frustration as he slashed at the Brutal Bats descending toward Beatrice, his longsword driving them back with swift, precise strikes.

“Something like this! Is easy! Compared to Susie’s strike, these are nothing! They’re too weak!” Helena Slater shouted as she fought off Shadow Dogs beside Dana, having switched from her bow to dual daggers.

“You’re so right! This can’t begin to compare to Su’s speed! Aaah! I even feel like yawning!!!”

Both Dana and Helena, their bodies covered in wounds, had the same girl on their minds. The thought of her ignited new strength in them.

“That’s right! Susie’s blow was way heavier than this!” Lombard roared as he forced back several Shadow Dogs at once with the tower shield in his grasp.

“We won’t be able to show our faces before Big Sis Su if we get pushed back by something like this!” Mary shouted while firing an arrow into the sky while dodging several swooping Brutal Bats.

“You lot sure say some nice things!” Irvine shouted as he struck one of the descending Brutal Bats. His blow tore into its wing, but it wasn’t enough to bring the creature down.

“No good! Shelly, Virgil, please lend me a hand!” Corin called over Shelly Frank from the 5th level and Virgil Filane from the 4th level to help with the healing.

“But, Corin, we still can’t use healing!” Shelly’s words weren’t spoken out of refusal but from frustration at her inability to act. That same feeling weighed on every child from the middle and lower levels who had taken refuge in the training area.

If they could, they would have fought on the front lines themselves. But in their current state, they would only hinder the upperclassmen. So for now, all they could do was try their best from behind the lines.

“It’s fine! You just need to press down on the wound like this and supply it with Mana. You’ve practiced with magic tools before, right? It’s the same thing!”

As she spoke, Corin placed gauze over the wound and walked Shelly through the fundamentals. She left Charles in Shelly’s care and Tomas with Virgil. Both of them focused on treating them, determined to get it right.

“Right now, we’re just stopping the bleeding. Just keep doing what you’re doing.”

Still limping on her injured left leg, Corin hurried to Clark and Ashton to treat them. Clark’s bleeding hadn’t stopped yet. He was now cradled in the arms of Gloria Heron, also a 5th level like Shelly, who was pressing gauze against his wounds.

The children’s situation didn’t allow for a moment of respite. No one there could see any hope. But even so, not a trace of resignation could be found in the children’s eyes.

“The children here are amazing! Normally, after getting beaten this badly, you’d expect them to break down. But no one is giving up! On the contrary, their fighting spirit’s only growing! No wonder Master Orbet has high hopes for them!”

Doug looked up at Eliza with amusement, his eyes sparkling with excitement.

“That’s exactly why I can’t wait to see the looks on their faces when that spirit is finally broken. You’d love to see that too, wouldn’t you, Eliza?”

With that, Doug curled the corners of his mouth into a wide grin, the expression of someone who was thoroughly enjoying himself. Seeing his reaction, Eliza could only shrug her shoulders in exasperation.

◇◇◇

“What? No way! Argernon? You’ve got to be kidding me!”
“What’s wrong, Bibi? Did something happen to Argernon again?”

Irvine stepped toward her, concern etched into his voice.

“That child… He’s fully healed!”
“What?”
“That aside! He found Su! I’m going to summon her!”

Irvine blinked, caught off guard, watching Beatrice as she sprang into motion.

“Can you summon her right now?”
“Give me three minutes! If I have that, I can summon her!”
“Okay! You’ve got them! Everyone, listen up!!!”

Irvine grinned with fierce hope, then turned and shouted with everything he had.

“Three minutes! Hold on for three minutes! She’s coming!!!”

He raised his longsword like a signal flare, his voice booming to reach every corner of the battlefield.

Carl lay nearby, still breathing raggedly, but the bleeding had stopped. His expression, though strained, held a flicker of relief thanks to Beatrice’s healing.

Not far from him, Beatrice had already knelt and begun tracing a summoning circle into the ground, inscribing its complex symbols with practiced precision.

Irvine planted himself in front of her and Carl, gripping his longsword tightly, guarding them with everything he had.

“Three minutes! Hold off for just three minutes!!!” Irvine shouted once again.
“Hehe! Good! Let’s do this then!”
“Ufufufu! I’ve got to show Big Sis what I can do.”
“Fine by me! I’m not letting you go near Irvine!”

On the front line, Dana, Helena, and Lombard felt their spirits surge, determination filling their tired limbs. Seeing that William couldn’t help but smile.

“Susie is something else…”
“Everyone! Su’s coming! Just a bit more! Hold on for just a bit more!”

Corin yelled to the children that were still scattered across the wreckage of the training area. They all shouted back in a strong and unified voice!
