“Susie, I’d like to ask you to run an errand for me tomorrow at noon. Can you do it?”

Sir Howard asked me while I was getting tea after dinner.

“Tomorrow? But I have school.”
“You can do it in the afternoon as well. I want you and Henry to go to Cope Town.”
“With Mr. Henry?”
“Yes. Henry has an errand to run at the temple in Cope Town. I want you to go with him to Cope Town and pick up something there.”

(I wonder what it is… If he wants us to go together, it’s me going as Mr. Henry’s attendant.)

“I would have loved to take care of it myself, but… tomorrow, I have a meeting I can’t miss. However, Marsh will be leaving for the Royal Capital the day after tomorrow, and I can’t afford not to pick it up.”

Sir Howard clenched his fists in frustration. Miss Sonia giggled at his reaction.

(Isn’t Marsh the name of the blacksmith in Cope Town? It can’t be!)

“Could it be… My weapon… Are my swords done?!”
“That’s right. Marsh said he wants to give them to the owner in order to make some final adjustments. So you will need to go and pick them up, Susie.”
“I’ll go! I’m going! I’m definitely going!”

Excitement surged through me all at once.

I was currently wearing the leather armor that had been custom-made for me in the summer. About a month ago, Sir Howard had asked a blacksmith in Cope Town to craft matching pieces for it. The speed of the order was astonishing. The two swords had been completed in just a month!

Mr. Marsh, the head of the workshop, was responsible for forging and maintaining the weapons and armor used by the Village Guard in the Amukham District. It was said that he personally crafted each piece. I knew I had to receive my swords in person and properly express my gratitude!

“So you’ll go… I’m sorry. I would’ve loved to give them to you myself, but…”
“Oh, Howard, you don’t have to repeat yourself so many times.”

Miss Sonia said while chuckling. I stood up from my chair, walked over to Sir Howard’s side, and took his hand. As I looked up into his kind eyes, warmth filled my heart.

“I am truly happy that I was able to receive this gift thanks to you, Sir Howard.”

With that, I clasped his large hand in both of mine and expressed my gratitude. Sir Howard smiled warmly. “Really? Yes, yes,” he said, clearly pleased.

“Uncle, this might just be the first time I’ve seen you have such a soft expression.”

(Will?! What are you saying?! Sir Howard always responds to me with that face. It’s not rare at all.)

“Fufufufu. Howard just can’t help Susie’s cuteness.”

Hearing Sonia give that embarrassing explanation, Will muttered, “I should have expected as much from Susie.”

(Is he praising me?)

“So, does that mean you won’t be coming to the training area tomorrow, Susie?” Will asked.
“Yes. Please give my regards to everyone, Will.”
“Leave it to me! Especially Dana. I’ll make sure to train her like a first-rate student… and keep things adequate!”

Will muttered the last part, squinting slightly as he gazed into the distance.

(I feel a little sorry for Dana. But then again, you reap what you sow.)

“Hello, Miss Susie. Thanks for coming with me today.”
“Hello, Mr. Henry. The pleasure is all mine.”

Shortly before lunchtime ended, Mr. Henry picked me up from school in his carriage. His carriage was nothing like our pitch-black one. Instead, it was pure white, adorned with fine gold detailing, giving it an air of both grandeur and purity. It gave off the appearance of a carriage belonging to the temple.

According to Mr. Henry, it had been an offering from a wealthy former nobleman.

“To me, it just feels like another extravagant waste of money.” He said.

The carriage was pulled by a white horse, or at least I thought it was a horse. I still couldn’t shake the feeling that it looked more like a lizard. Despite the reptilian appearance, our Regulus had grown fond of me lately, and, strangely enough, he was starting to seem cuter by the day. Regardless, it was a white horse.

Still, I couldn’t help but think that this white horse and carriage would make a perfect setting for a wedding. Curious, I asked Mr. Henry about it, and it just happened that they’ve been using it for that for years.

For some reason, I was excited to sit inside a white carriage used for weddings.

I was wearing a bright green skirt today, but if I had been dressed in white—something like a flowing dress—I would have been even more excited! And while wearing my hair in pigtails, with a white straw hat resting on my head, I sat quietly beside Mr. Henry as we traveled to Cope Town.

As we were travelling, Mr. Henry decided to use the time to continue his lecture on Magic.

This time, he spoke about the next realms: the astral body and the mental body.

Roughly put, beyond the mental body lay the realm of the soul. Mr. Henry explained that the soul was contained within a vessel known as the causal body, which resided in the area that housed the superconsciousness and the superego, a place that humans weren’t aware of.

This causal body was sometimes called the thinking body. It was said to grow with the accumulated memories of past lives, much like the rings of a tree, shaping and determining the direction of a person’s will.

Therefore, the size of one’s causal body was essentially the size of one’s soul. The area that encompassed both the mental body and the causal body was referred to as the Manas or psychic body. Its size was directly proportional to a person’s Mana. Mr. Henry mentioned that this concept was widely accepted in modern magic studies.

To be honest, I was completely lost at this point. I’d never been able to understand souls and such.

Mr. Henry reassured me that I only needed a general understanding of what he was explaining.

“From this point onward, this subject falls into the domain of theology or university-level studies,” he said.

Even so, he shared something that piqued my curiosity.

He explained that there were beings known as Monsters that stirred human emotions and fed on them and that Demonic Beasts were one of them.

And by emotions, he meant the astral body. These entities consumed the astral body by intensifying emotions such as pain, fear, and anger.

“Like vampires?” I asked.

Mr. Henry’s expression twitched slightly. Then, in a quiet voice, he asked, “You know about them?”

“Vampires are detestable creatures. They do not stop at the astral body—they devour the very essence of the Manas, absorbing parts of it to enhance their Mana. A part of the soul of their victims becomes trapped, and the victims become unable to return to the cycle of reincarnation… at least, not until the vampire is destroyed…”
