Lunch came, and the children all ate lunch together on the lawn found on the south side of the school.

On both sides of Susie were the two girls who’d spent time with her all morning, Leila Carter and Mabel Beaumont, who’d begun calling Susie, Su.

Suddenly, Mia appeared and spoke to Susie.

“Susie, may I call you Su too?” she asked, to which Susie replied, “Sure!” This led to others joining in, all wanting to call Susie, Su.

As they were enjoying lunch, Susie noticed a small animal perched on Beatrice’s shoulder.

(What? That’s a house mouse. But it seems a bit big to be one. Maybe it’s a hamster? A white hamster? And why is its tail so long?)

The animal’s body was about 12 to 13 centimeters long, while its tail was close to 20 centimeters. The white mouse was sitting on Beatrice’s shoulder while she was feeding it. Susie grew curious about the matter, so she decided to ask Beatrice about it.

“Oh, this. This is Argernon! It’s my familiar! It’s extremely clever!”
“It’s so clever that it’ll be forced out of the classroom when we have exams!”
“It’s smarter than Bibi, so it’d probably do the test for her.”
“Hey! That’s not true!”

As the girls were teasing one another, Argernon looked at Susie and twitched its nose. It felt as if it was trying to let her know that it knew what she was. Then suddenly, Argernon slid off Beatrice’s shoulder and came right up to Susie. It climbed up her shoulder and began sniffing her ear.

“Hya!”

Susie involuntarily shrank back in embarrassment. Argernon circled her shoulder several times, then squeaked at Susie before suddenly getting off and going back to Beatrice.

“Whoa! Argernon came to greet you! It seems it likes you!”

(That confirms it. I’m still good with animals too.)

“Susie! In the afternoon, we’ll be splitting up into groups for sword, spear, and magic training! What are you going to do?!” Beatrice asked Susie after they’d finished eating.
“Just so you know, it doesn’t matter which you choose! Everyone does the one they’re best at! However, some try other things depending on the day! You’re free to choose what you want to do!”

(I see. So it’s like clubs, and it seems participation is voluntary. Even so, I doubt that there’d be any kids that would slack off. People here tend to value strength beyond anything. I guess that is reasonable. They live next to a dangerous forest. Weakness could mean death; naturally, they’d prefer to be able to protect themselves. So, with that out of the way, what should I do? Everyone seems quite eager for sword training, so that’s bound to be fun, but maybe I’ll try magic training today. It’d be nice if I could learn more about how magic works in this world.)

“Want… learn… Magic!”
“Whaaaaat?!”

Dana, who had been staring at Susie with sparkling eyes, voiced her dissatisfaction.

“Why?! Why would someone capable of such movements want to learn Magic? No way! I won’t allow it! Come and spar with me!”

Dana exclaimed, and Susie suddenly felt her body escaping back. She was somewhat overwhelmed by Dana’s excited advance.

“Dana! I know you’re disappointed, but you can’t cause trouble for Su.”

Corin looked up at Dana while using her fingers to push up her glasses.

“I-I… I had no intention of causing trouble for her.”
“Su, can you use a sword?” Corin asked.
“I… can.”
“But you won’t train in swordsmanship?”
“I… want… learn… Magic… first… be… calm… Then… learn… sword!”

“Really?! So that’s how it was! I for sure thought you’d stick with only Magic. Then come train with us after you’re done with your magic lessons, okay?”
“Okay,” Susie said, accepting Dana’s offer.
“That’s great then! Still, I’m somewhat bummed out that we won’t be able to spar today, but we’ll be able to soon!”
“Yes. I… do… my… best!”

Susie clenched both fists while looking at Dana as if saying, (I’ll do my best with Magic so that I can come to sword training!)

“Thank you! Whoa, I’m so, so happy!”

Dana exclaimed, hugging Susie. Susie, on the other hand, had her face buried deep in Dana’s chest, completely unable to breathe.

“God! You are so damn cute, Su!” Dana said, hugging Susie even tighter.
“Blegh!”
“Dana! That’s enough! It’s not fair to keep her all to yourself!”

Corin went to pull Susie away from Dana, but as she reached them, the two young girls also joined in the fray, screaming, “Me too! Me too!”

Following a back and forth, the three were able to take Susie away from Dana; however, the two little girls lost their balance and, along with Susie, crushed Corin under their weight.

Dana then took the two young girls and Susie back and began to spin them around. Both Leila and Mabel were having the time of their lives, chuckling with delight, while Susie’s eyes spun dizzily.

Watching that, Mia muttered, “I’ll get my fair share of hugs later.”
“I also need to get my act together!” Beatrice said, with fires burning in her eyes.

Thus, this long and peaceful lunch break went by.
