“What~~! T-Then, those Great Potions were ‘crafted’ by Alim? She didn’t just ‘bring them out’?”
“That’s why I told you… I was super surprised, too.”
Lili’s shocked voice echoed. Ruin had told her from where he had gotten the Great Potion that healed her so quickly.
“Be honest, Alim, are you actually 80 years old instead of 12…?” she wondered.
“Nah, she ain’t 80. Gotta be 70 or so,” Orgo commented
For some reason, they started spouting this nonsense arbitrarily.
“I’m only 12 years old! In the first place, I look like a kid, so there’s no way I’m between 70 and 80 years old!”
“That’s not impossible, you know?” Ruin said. “There are skills that grant perpetual youth or rejuvenate you. Oh, and there’s also elves and dwarves…”
So, there are elves and dwarves in this world, too? Seriously, it’s like a fantasy world. Or rather, are there no limits to what skills can do?
“I don’t think she’s an elf. 80-year-old elves look like they’re in their thirties.”
“Huh, was that so?”
“By the way, Alim. How long have you been crafting Great Potions?”
Right. I’m still making Great Potions. I’m crafting enough to fill all the flask-looking things here, you know. I already made 20 potions. Oh, they’re waiting for an explanation.
“Erm… This medicine is apparently precious, so I was going to make as much as possible as thanks for you taking care of me, I guess~…”
“You don’t need to worry about that! Seriously!” Gerbera, who was busily working, told me after hearing that.
Hm~. I’d prefer to leave them here… Oh, that’s it. I wonder, could I just leave her the potions in exchange for medicinal herbs and flasks? I’d definitely like some medicinal herbs.
“Then, could you give me enough medicinal herbs and bottles for around 10 potions? If I… in exchange… leave you these potions… would that be no good?” I looked up at her, trying to make teary eyes.
“Uhm!? I-Is that really fine for you?”
“Yes, here are the 10 potions.” I told her with a smile. “Please take them!”
“…I give up. I’m grateful for these 10 potions. Then, how will you carry the medicinal herbs?”
I have something reliable for that. This pouch.
“E-Erm… To be honest, this is…”
“Oh my, is this an accessory case?”
As a demonstration, I stored the desk in the pouch and then took it out again.
“My goodness, you can fit an awful lot in that bag, can’t you~. A magic bag that can store and take out this much must have been very expensive, you know? Though it depends on how much can you put in, and if that amount can be increased. So, how much can you put in?”
I thought about telling her that it’s unlimited, but containers with no limit are national treasure grade, aren’t they? That would probably cause another fuss.
Let’s stop doing that, I’ll tell the truth. In the future, that is. For now, I’ll tell her that I don’t know it.
“I cannot say…”
“I see, Alim… your memory… That’s it! The carriage stays here for the night before returning to the royal capital. In other words, it will arrive today. There’s always a merchant riding on it, who buys Cabas, the local specialty vegetable of this village, and sells various tools to the villagers, but once every six months, that merchant is an executive of the merchant association, you see. It’s been exactly half a year since that merchant came here, so perhaps it’ll be him. If it’s him, he should be able to appraise that pouch! Let’s have him appraise it!”
“S-Sure…”
Hm~. Damn, this is really bad… I can do nothing but give in. I want the potions1.
“I’ll ask him to appraise it…”
“Heh-heh, I’ll continue to prepare for the banquet, then! You can look forward to it!” Gerbera said and then left.
“10 potions! You’re generous, aren’t ya? By the way, why are you still makin’ more of ’em, Alim?” Orgo asked me, continuing our talk.
“They’re for you all!” I told him.
“Huh, are you sure?” Ruin tried to stop me. “But we haven’t got anything to give you in exchange, you know?”
“In that cause, please teach me something… That’s right… how about you tell me… about money?”
“Would that really be enough, Alim?” Myuri wondered.
“Yes.”
“Gah-ha-ha-ha-ha, Alim, you can make Great Potions, but you forget the weirdest things!” Orgo laughed.
“Gotcha, you’re seriously fine with that? Then, I’ll teach you about it quickly,” Ruin said, as he took out out several rectangular coins with round corners from his pocket.
“Listen well, this is a currency called ‘Bells’. There are six different coins. They’re in the order of Copper Coin → Large Copper Coin → Silver Coin → Large Silver Coin → Gold Coin → Large Gold Coin. One copper coin is one bell, a large copper coin 10 bells, a silver coin 100 bells, a large silver coin 1000 bells, a gold coin 10’000 bells, and a large gold coin 100’000 bells. Incidentally, a cheap house costs 15 large gold coins! And a Great Potion is 300’000 bells2.”
Let me think, one of these potions is three large gold coins, then? And 15 of those coins will buy a cheap house, so… one large gold coin would be around one million Japanese yen! So, three such coins would be three million yen?
Hah~… So, that’s why everyone was shocked, right?
“Thank you very much. Please take these, then.”
“Alim, did you listen to what I said?”
“Yes, I3 can create something that valuable. Shouldn’t I give it to someone who did something for me?”
“Wah! Alim! You’re such a good girl! Let me squeeze you!”
Lilo hugged me tightly once more.
I can’t breathe…
TL notes:
I’m not sure about the speakers in this chapter. In some places I could identify them, but in others it wasn’t clear enough.
Same as what I did with the three final Whatever Translations chapters, I’ll be translating these chapters, until I reach the ones Fenderson did, from scratch, since the little that I could build upon is not worth the constant distraction.
Footnotes:
- Not sure if that’s right. It might also mean that someone else (will) want the potions. Alternatively, it might be a typo and meant to be “medicinal herbs” instead of “potions”.
- It said four large gold coins in chapter 35. Not sure which is correct.
- For whatever reason, Alim uses 私 (polite/female pronoun) here to refer to himself. Likely a typo.
