“Phew… hah… phew…”
Even I ended up getting somewhat winded on the final stretch. The intra scholastic tournament would already be next week, so I obviously started training daily for it. I mean, normally you’d start training three weeks… no, even a month before, but I got complacent because of my abilities.
Strictly speaking, there was also the time in Anazumu, so the training I put in was probably several times more than what the other team members did, but from an outside perspective it undoubtedly looked as if I was slacking off.
Over there, Ayumu prepared a magic room wherein time was sped up and robots who’d serve as training partners for me (not sure how he did it, but he even included the data of an Olympic athlete who got gold). This obviously made a world of difference.
Thanks to that, I probably got a lot stronger. At the end, I managed to score at least one point on every robot. I was grateful to my friend, just as I was grateful to Rir for helping me and testing my skills.
I probably wouldn’t have any skill or experience issues. My abilities were what got me this far.
Incidentally, my Martial Arts skills were currently inactive. When we came back to Earth, my fighting skills started to activate on their own and (according to Kanata) there was currently no way other than deactivating them completely1… but even without them, I could feel how much stronger I had gotten.
That said, I didn’t get why Ayumu suddenly came and asked “How about we include other fighting styles? It might help!” before installing all kinds of combat data on the robots and making me fight them. In the end, I learned a ton of new things.
“Man… I can’t believe you’re messing around with your girlfriend right before the tournament. Just what is this?” Gouda, the vice club head complained. “You’ve clearly gotten stronger than you were last week. I couldn’t even see your moves.”
He couldn’t see my moves…? Huh, guess it’s gotten that far.
“What did you do?” he asked.
“Eh… I mean, just trainin’ in private with her…”
“Oh, so you’re training by the two of you without coming to the club room… Techniques to pin someone down, for example…”
“I know what you’re thinkin’, but you’re way off.”
Not good. For a moment, I thought he found out what we do on the other side, even though that shouldn’t be impossible. This ain’t good at all.
On the surface, I was your standard high schooler, which meant they could never find out that I had already crossed that line2.
“I was wondering about that before, but how far have you and Fún gone?” Gouda asked.
“Oh, I’m curious about that, too!” another team member joined in.
“Same here!”
“Wha-!?”
Why are these guys so interested in that? No choice. Guess I’ll play it down somewhat.
“…We went on a date in the amusement park, and we kissed. Happy now?”
“Whoa!”
Damn you, Gouda. I’ll throw you later.
“It’s not my place to speak about someone’s girlfriend,” a younger team member commented, “but Fún is just so sexy.”
“True, she is. I keep looking where I shouldn’t…”
Whether these guys were looking at her chest or legs, their gazes were weird.
“Why you…” I growled.
“Eek… the club head who never loses his temper looks like he’s about to blow his top…”
“I’m more exasperated than angry.”
“Well, I get it. I apologize, so please forgive me.”
Rir was popular among the boys, and they couldn’t help themselves, so I decided to overlook it. On the contrary, it made me feel somewhat proud of my girlfriend.
“I’ll say… hah, you’re strong, Fún.”
“You think so? Thank you, Instructor!”
On the other hand, there was Gorilla Sensei who made this comment as he seemed to watch over Rir. She was training with me, so it was only natural for her to grow stronger.
“Gouda, come here for a moment.”
“What is it?”
When he was called, Gouda put down his sports drink and went to our instructor.
“Go one round against Fún.”
“Against her?”
“Yes.”
Gouda shot me a glance.
Gorilla Sensei asked him to, so it can’t be helped… Guess I’ll signal him with my eyes that he’s in for it if he tries anythin’ weird.
Likely picking up on my thoughts, Gouda’s face twitched slightly as he nodded.
“If you would, Gouda!” Rir told him.
“R-Right,” he replied sheepishly.
The two of them got ready in the spot designated by Gorilla Sensei and then started the match. By common sense, Rir was at an overwhelming disadvantage. There was the height and weight difference, and, more fundamentally, the difference in gender. And there was also a difference in experience.
However…
“As I thought.”
“…What?”
She had thrown Gouda.
“S-She got him!?”
“No way!?”
Gorilla Sensei didn’t seem surprised. He must’ve already noticed it. While she was a beginner at Judo, she trained with me, her existing affinity for martial arts and fighting skills helped perfect her abilities, and being from a warrior race, she could exhibit high physical abilities… Even I didn’t think I could perceive all her movements.
“…Gouda is by no means a weak fighter. On the contrary, he has the abilities to be entrusted the role of vice-captain, even if we were to make it to the countrywide tournament. That’s the reason he’s the vice club head… This is Fún’s affinity for physical activities3. If you ask me, it isn’t just Judo but all kinds of sports. If she had come to this school earlier, she’d surely already be registered as an athlete.”
Gouda looked at Rir and me, still dumbfounded.
Maybe that was what Gorilla Sensei had been aiming for…
“Also, I assume that she really did train with Hino4 daily. I think that was what caused her talent in Judo to bloom.”
“I see… I did hear several times that she beat a girl from the track and field club by a wide margin.”
Gouda stood up with a remorseful look. Then, he stared at me.
“You’ll help us, right, Club Head?”
“Obviously.”
Gorilla Sensei had managed to stir up the crowd and lift morale.
Footnotes:
- In the original, it says that you can’t turn them off, which is at odds with the previous and following sentences, so I assume it’s an error.
- I remember when I was in tenth grade, a classmate was bragging about finally having had his first time with his girlfriend. Some people congratulated him, but no one treated him differently afterwards. It was simply something that was expected to happen sooner or later when you were in a relationship.
- The original is just センス (the English word “sense” in Katakana). I assume it’s meant in this manner.
- He calls him “Shuu” in the original, which likely is an error since everyone other than the protagonists among themselves use last names.
