“Why is the public safety so bad in the first place?” I asked.
“We know the reason for that. It’s because of the caste system.”
That was probably correct. Those who were sick of the system and chose a life of crime, or those who had no choice since they lived in poverty due to their low social standing… there must’ve been many people like that.
“In the end, something has to be done to change that.”
“…We agree. It absolutely needs to happen during Our generation,” the king firmly declared. “Our subjects might be the ones to cause trouble… but We are the one who needs to do something about it.”
He was an SSS-Rank adventurer, strong enough to possess a Master skill, but he was still trying to achieve more. It was commendable, even considering his obsession with me. I had to give respect where it was due.
In that case, I can’t do anything strange to help. He himself declared that he would do something, so it isn’t my place to butt in.
“I see, uhm… please do whatever you can, Your Majesty!”
My genius younger brother surely would’ve known something more appropriate to tell him, but I wasn’t that gifted, so that was all I came up with.
“Heh-heh, if you, Alim, tell Us to do whatever We can, then that’s exactly what We’ll do! Watch Us, as We get rid of discrimination like that SSS-Rank hero!” he proclaimed, full of energy.
Yep, he can look cool when he puts his mind to it.
Anyway, we should go home.
“With that matter being settled, too, we’ll be on our way.”
“Do you have work tomorrow?”
“Yes, we have.”
We would be interviewed for an article.
“It must be tough. You seem busier than any other SSS-Ranker.”
“It’s not that bad. It has been a while since we did actual adventurer work.”
“We see. Your main occupation has changed towards modeling. Still, you seem rather busy.”
“It’s true, that’s why we don’t act as adventurers unless a wild SSS-Rank magic beast were to appear… or something on that level.”
“That is one way to go about it.”
Well… to be blunt, I’m more of a crafter/idol than an adventurer at this point. Anyway, time to be off…
“W-W-W-We discovered something astounding, Your Majesty!”
“Huh, what is it!?”
The scholar who’d left just earlier had returned, looking rather agitated. For him to be back so soon… he must’ve picked the 1000-times reading speed setting.
“It is about the weapon used to seal the evil god! Just like the Hero’s Sword of the Mephilad Kingdom and Yggdrasil’s ‘Gungnir1‘, our country used to have a weapon effective against the evil god!”
“What… is that true!?”
Huh, isn’t that backwards? Shouldn’t they know about that?
“Didn’t you know about that…?”
“Well, somewhat. It is said that the weapon disappeared the moment the evil god was destroyed. It is quite an old story, so technically We knew about it, but-”
“We had no knowledge about what kind of weapon it was! Thanks to your help, Lady Alim, we now do.”
That’s great.
In the end, it took a lot to seal evil gods in the first place. When we sealed Surtr, he said that he wouldn’t be able to break out, so if it had ended in this manner… maybe the world would’ve completely forgotten about it 1000 years from now.
No, 1000 years would be too short. There are still tons of books left from that time. In that case, isn’t it weird that there are so few books left mentioning the weapon that sealed the evil god2? Well, not my place to worry that much about it. If anything happens, all we need to do is take care of the evil god.
“So, what kind of weapon is it?” the king asked.
“A vajra, Your Majesty.”
“A vajra?”
“Indeed, I’ll show you the part in the diary right away.”
I didn’t know what to make of the illustration the scholar showed us. At best, it reminded me of a rather ornate dumbbell3.
“It seems to work similar to a staff or wand.”
“A staff? This thing? It’s true that there are those who use instruments and such as magical foci, though…”
“Well, it might be part of that category.”
The SSS-Ranker Heimdal and Gog, who was part of Lahand’s party, used weapons like that. Swords, spears… and then bows and staves seemed obvious, but this thing looked unusual.
“…That’s right, you were able to craft the Hero’s Sword, Alim, weren’t you? Would you be able to recreate this weapon?” the king asked.
“I could, but… what for?”
“Evil gods are frightening beings… It would be just in case. We shall pay you however much you wish, so can’t you craft it for Us!? No pressure, it could be whenever you have time.”
This went in a strange way. Looks like I’ll end up recreating this so-called vajra.
“Uhm… it would be at least one week from now. Would that be alright with you, Your Majesty?”
“Yes, We don’t mind if it takes some time.”
So, I’ll really make it?
Well, it is a direct request, so I’ll go about making it earnestly, but surely just by crafting the weapon, the evil god won’t come back to life, right?
Footnotes:
- The original is エクスカリバー (“Excalibur”). While I can’t discount the possibility of Alim having forgotten the name and thus not calling out the mistake, I assume it’s an error.
- I can think of several reasons for this knowledge getting lost, especially if it poses some kind of danger.
- The vajra is a ritual weapon from Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. Alim’s description is pretty accurate.
