A long time ago, there lived a man, boasting both strength and good looks. His name was Shuu, and he was a gentle soul, unable to ignore those in need, and powerful enough to defeat barehandedly even a hundred armed warriors or samurais, if saving the one he wanted to save required it.
One day, when he entered the forest to create a strengthening serum (protein extract) from nature’s bounty, he encountered a wolf. Its white fur held an enchanting beauty.
“Woah!?”
Assuming it would attack him, the man immediately took a fighting stance, but the animal showed no hint of doing so. On the contrary, it didn’t seem to possess the energy to move.
“What’s wrong?”
When he looked at the wolf’s feet, he saw that its leg was caught in a foothold trap, which must’ve been set up by someone hunting tanuki or rabbits. Looking closer, he realized that its body was covered in wounds. In addition, one of its ears was missing.
“Woah, seriously…? Guess it can’t be helped.”
Shuu, mentally reasoning that the wolf was neither rabbit nor tanuki, so whoever set the trap wouldn’t mind, released the animal.
The wolf stared at the man’s face.
“What now? You hungry? Do your wounds hurt? For now, eat this.”
The man took some rabbit jerky from his pocket and held it out to the wolf. The animal’s nose moved, carefully sniffing the treat, before giving it a lick and finally nibbling on a small piece.
“…You like it?”
After staring at the man’s face for some time again, the animal devoured the rest of the meat.
“Gotcha, guess you were hungry… What ’bout your wounds?”
This might come as no surprise, but the wolf didn’t reply.
“Well, with all those injuries, I better carry you-”
Shuu was about to simply pick up the animal, when it nimbly licked his face. A moment later, it quickly stepped back, as if planning to flee.
“Wha-…? You fine already? If that was enough to bring you back to speed, guess you’ll manage…”
・・・
“I should go to sleep.”
Shuu was about to sink into his futon, when there was a knock on the door.
“Comin’, who is it?”
He opened the door. On the other side stood a woman wearing a bamboo hat, who seemed to be his age.
“Woof… U-Uhm… I got lost in the streets, so might I stay the night here, Sir…?”
“‘Course, that’s fine! Come on in.”
“Thank you! Thank you so much!”
She beamed in joy as she stepped into Shuu’s house.
“Did you eat already? I can make somethin’.”
“I-I couldn’t impose on you! I will be-”
A growl came from the woman’s stomach.
“Ha-ha-ha, it’ll take just a moment.”
“My apologies…”
Shortly later, Shuu brought her a simple meal. She ate it as if it was a genuine delicacy.
“It’s… good…”
“I see, glad to hear that.”
“Thank you so much…!” The woman prostrated herself on the floor.
“Oy, no need for that. It was no big thing.”
“I-I was just so overjoyed…”
“Oh, well. For now, let’s go to sleep. Say, what’s your name?”
“I… I am called Rir, Sir.”
“Rir, huh? You look my age so… you talkin’ all polite feels weird. Anyway, good night.”
“Understood… I wish you a good night.”
・・・
When the man woke up the next morning, Rir was gone.
“Left already, huh?”
“I’m back…!”
That moment, the door opened. The woman had returned. In her hand, she was clutching a pheasant’s wing.
“Woah!? What’s with that?”
“This is… as thanks…”
“There was no need to go that far…!”
“Woof, I caught it with my own hands. This is what I am good at,” Rir proudly declared as she puffed her chest out proudly.
“Guess it’s fine then, but… what’s with those wounds?” Shuu asked, trying to tear his eyes from her breasts.
“I… I had those before…”
“You gotta take it easy.”
Shuu patted her head. Surprised by his own boldness, he hurriedly pulled his hand back.”
“S-Sorry.”
“I don’t mind… say, I have a favor to ask for. Might I stay here for a bit longer?”
“S-Sure thing.”
“Alright… In that case, I should properly show you my gratitude. My apologies, but could you close your eyes? Whatever happens, don’t open them.”
“Huh?”
For now, he did what she said and closed his eyes. When he did, he could hear the rustling of fabric and not a moment later, he could feel her breath from close. She suddenly took his right hand and brought it somewhere. In the palm of his hand, there was a soft sensation.
That moment, Shuu, having realized what was going on, hurriedly pulled his hand back. Then, he impulsively opened his eyes.
“Y-You, what are you thinkin’!?”
In front of him, the woman from earlier was no more. From her head, a doglike ear was growing, there was a tail on her behind, her upper body was bare, and her cheeks were tinged red.
“Woof, I told you not to look…”
“I mean, sorry ’bout that, but what were you doin’ just now…?”
“I-I was showing you my gratitude…”
She was scratching her cheek bashfully.
“Also, what’s with that tail and your ears?”
“Huh… ah!?”
“Besides, that missin’ ear… no way, are you that wolf from back then!?”
When he pointed this out, her eyes went round like those of a startled dog, and they started to tear up.
“I am sorry… so sorry! I-I… that was the first time someone showed such kindness to me… I-If only it had ended then, but for whatever reason, I turned human afterwards… so… uhm, I used my nose to find your home… and…!”
“Calm down and tell me what happened,” Shuu encouraged her to tell her story, as he gently rubbed her back.
“I don’t understand it myself! Both why I found myself in human shape and my feelings towards you…! I am a monster, so I can’t be with you…!”
“I don’t mind that, y’know.”
“Huh?”
“I mean, I don’t get it either, but… it might just be fate.”
Afterwards, there were rumors of the man having taken someone in marriage.
