“Phew… finally made it here.”
“You had it tough.”
I managed to dodge the waves of nobles and ultra-high rank adventurers, all while keeping a smile on my face. Though it was nice how everyone commented how cute I looked when they saw me.
At this point, most eyes seemed to be glued to the decorations or Mika and me… which came as a bit of a surprise. Queen Karuna used to act as something like an idol before our time, then there was Sakura… and there were also some nobles from other countries present, who were said to be beautiful.
“You probably also had a hard time with all the greetings, Mika.”
“Yeah, a bit.”
She boasted indescribable beauty, so it was unavoidable. Her dress was also rather lovely.
“Come to think of it, when will the food be served?”
“Before the wedding celebration. After the vows and the kiss, but before the performances start.”
“I see.”
At a normal wedding, the bride and groom wouldn’t have time to enjoy the food in peace. Therefore, I installed a device that sped up time1 just in an area centered around them while they were eating.
“Oh, it’s time,” muttered Shuu, who’d arrived close to us unnoticed.
As if arranged in advance, all the people who were chatting, striking deals, or even pursuing their occupations here, fell silent and turned their attention to the altar. Archbishop Chris was already standing there.
A sacred atmosphere started to fill the venue. Well, I had tinkered a bit with things in advance.
“Today, I welcome all of you who’ve come from all over the world-” the archbishop started to greet the attendees.
“-Thus, may the groom enter.” After talking for a few minutes, which included giving a few short words of thanks to the gods, Chris first called Uruto.
Two church sisters opened the large door. The next moment, Uruto, looking dapper wearing the tuxedo in his Lastman appearance, walked down the wedding aisle2. His friend Bacchus served as best man.
At this point, I had added a few things to the arrangement.
First, the music… Normally, an orchestra would play, but I did away with that and instead let background music play. I had changed it under the assumption that a live performance of an orchestra would capture too much of the audience’s attention. Well, the fact that many people started to wonder where the music was coming from turned out to be a flaw in my plan, but they ultimately did turn their gazes on the groom.
Next, the lighting was dimmed, with only Uruto and Bacchus being illuminated, so they’d stand out. That said, it wasn’t like a spotlight, instead it created a mysterious effect, as if natural light somehow concentrated there. It turned out pretty good.
The two of them came to a halt in front of Chris.
“Next, may the bride enter.”
At these words, the natural-seeming spotlight hit Parasuna, who’d been waiting on stand-by. The role of her father… was played by Gilmars, to everyone’s surprise. I mean, I knew about it, and I even I couldn’t help being startled. They linked arms and walked down the aisle. With Gilmars’ nature, he’d normally break into a grin when he was this close to a woman, but this time, his expression stayed serious… or rather, soft.
The rabbit ears weren’t yet visible on Parasuna’s head. That would come later. It wouldn’t be long until both Uruto and Parasuna revealed their true identities.
The main actors were now all gathered in front of the archbishop.
Uruto gave Gilmars a bow, which the latter returned. With this, the handover of the bride by the (stand-in in of the) father to the groom was complete.
“Let us sing.”
At Chris’ words, everyone stood up. The people of this world all knew the sacred hymns, so no song lyrics had been distributed. I had provided our four housemates with them before they came to the venue.
To be honest, I also never sang sacred songs. In the first place, I never came in contact with the religious customs of this world (though it seemed they were fundamentally similar to those on Earth), so I didn’t know much about them. I still sang the songs.
“Let us pray-”
After the song was over, everyone sat down in unison without any word or signal, as if it had been arranged in advance. The fact that their actions were so aligned despite the absence of practice or anything, spoke of how uniform religion was in this world. I ended up feeling embarrassed since I was a beat late.
The archbishop opened the holy scriptures started to read prayers. It was apparently customary to read parts of the scriptures. Just as I had done in my former world during funerals and weddings, I let the words pass from one ear to the other3.
Now, now now now, there finally came the part of the bride and groom’s vows. The part, where the two of them planned to reveal their true identities. Usually the main event of a wedding, and from the couple’s perspective, the most important part shaping their futures.
Uruto and Parasuna looked resolved… and they further seemed excited about their future life together.
Footnotes:
- Slowed down, in the original, which would give them even less time to enjoy the food.
- Can I just say how hilarious it is that Japan’s wasei word for “wedding aisle” is “virgin road”?
- I don’t think I ever related this much to Alim before.
