“Come to think of it, you defeated two evil gods, Alim, didn’t you?” King Rama asked after laughing for a while.
“Yes, I did.”
“…This is no mean feat. To think you brought down two godlike beings who caused issues for this world. It seems you are no longer living in the same realm as us.”

He really seemed interested in that topic. It felt a bit embarrassing.

“On that note, Our country also has an evil god.”
“Wha-…”
“Please wait, no need to be so displeased. Though it does look adorable… We do not wish for you to vanquish it.”

This is bad, I ended up showing just how fed up I am with fighting evil gods in front of the king and all the other higher ups. What does he mean by “not wanting me to beat it”?

“To be more precise, the evil god in Our country no longer exists. On top of being sealed, it was destroyed in the past, so We can no longer say for sure what its whereabouts are. What We mean to say is that it no longer is in Anazumu.”

What’s that supposed to mean?

I had no idea, since, although I did peruse this world’s historic records, I didn’t investigate them this thoroughly1.
There are just so many… On second thought, I better study up properly on history soon.

“However… as one of the Rama lineage, I still have the ‘power to choose the guide’, who is necessary to defeat said evil god.”

The Mephilad Kingdom has the power to find the hero by seeing status screens and… what was it again? Right, Yggdrasil, the country of the holy tree, had the ability to summon sages from another world. It sounds similar to those.

From what he said, the Rama family’s ability apparently was to freely nominate anyone apart from themselves.

“Well, there are some people We could nominate, but this feels like a waste,” King Rama continued. “If given the choice, wouldn’t you give such a privilege to a legendary figure?”

Oh no… I can see where this is going…

“So, Alim, how about you become the guide? We haven’t nominated anyone for generations, but-”
“I respectfully decline,” I replied before he could even finish his sentence.
“Why?” King Rama, who’d likely assumed I’d accept, looked stunned.
“If I accepted, that evil god who should’ve been destroyed would be revived and cause trouble… that’s the feeling I get. In any case, I wish to live in peace…”

In this world, things come back to life in the strangest of ways! Rir, who had been burned to ash could be revived, so it wouldn’t be weird if some evil god who was sealed and then destroyed would come back.

“…Hrm, certainly. It is possible Our predecessors feared this and didn’t nominate a guide for that reason. We understand your reasoning.”

This man listened to my argument and didn’t seem to mind even if I chose words that might’ve been seen as somewhat impolite. He really was a nice guy.

“…The time has already come for lunch,” King Mephilad, who likely saw this as a good stopping point, announced after looking at the clock.

He was right, it was that time.
…But what is the point of deliberately mentioning that in front of me?

“…My apologies, Alim, I will compensate you for it at a later day, but couldn’t you cook lunch for us?
“What…? A meal made by Alim herself!?” the foreign king interrupted, his eyes wide open.

His earlier gentlemanly atmosphere was gone without a trace. Even his guard seemed clearly shocked.

“I can do that,” I replied.
“I-Is this real!?”
“Please be assured… Alim’s cooking is the best in all Anazumu, I can attest to that.”

I actually had a title saying that.
Still, King Rama seemed happy about something different from the flavor…

“I am curious about the taste, too, but… oh… as the special honorary chairman of the ‘Association of Alimika Adorers2‘, there could be no greater bliss.”

Oh, so he’s part of that group, huh?
Even though we were trying to reduce our workload little by little over the days, the number of people in that association kept going up.

“I-I would love to taste it!”
“Are you truly fine with that, Alim?” King Mephilad tried to confirm.
“Yes, it doesn’t bother me, Your Majesty.”

When it came to cooking, I could make as much as needed. I liked to cook, and it gave me an opportunity to use some of my excessive material stores.

“Why not wait in the dining hall, then? Gordes, show the two of them the way.”
“As you wish.”

The knight commander left the throne room with King Rama and his guard. King Mephilad then got up from his throne and closed in on us.

“My apologies for causing you trouble.”
“Not at all, I don’t mind.”
“We have been on friendly terms with that country since ages past, but you never know what the future may bring, so we want to deepen our friendship. Fortunately, King Rama seems to be a big fan of the two of you… Couldn’t you indulge him and converse with him today?”

To be blunt, I didn’t know anything about diplomacy and politics. But since he was our fan and this was the best way to improve relations, I would help. Moreover, from what I could glimpse, he didn’t seem to be part of Mika’s faction, but mine instead.

“Understood, you can count on me!”
“Once more, you have my apologies.”

Mika and I calmed the apologetically bowing king and then went to the dining hall’s kitchen, so we wouldn’t leave King Rama waiting.

Footnotes:

  1. Maybe the first step in avoiding a potential enemy should be to learn everything you can about them?
  2. Sounds like they changed their name to something shorter.
