“Hey, Kanata?”
“What’s up?”

After taking the train and walking the same route their siblings had taken, they had arrived at their shoe cubbies at school.

“Uhm… there are love letters in there today too, aren’t there…?” Sakura timidly asked.

“The chairwoman… is that pretty…?”

One by one they spoke, as if to convince themselves.

“Did you forget your glasses at home, then?”
“That’s not something that would happen to the chairwoman.”
“No, that’s not it.”

Kanata gave everyone the same explanation they had given their neighbors earlier. While some points didn’t make sense, all their classmates seemed to believe it.

“So, was it a miracle, then?”
“Look, it’s surely something she worked hard for, since Kanata always took care of her, right…?”

Hamasaki and Meguro discussed.

“That’s all well and good. Say, Chairwoman, how about we-”

Kenmochi³, the number one smooth talker of their class, who had joined the conversation unnoticed, tried to make a move on Sakura, but Kanata quickly hugged her shoulders to stop him in his tracks.

“That’s as far as you go, Kenmochi.”
“What the hell, didn’t you tell me before that you guys weren’t dating?”
“I did, but since yesterday we are. Don’t even think of putting your hands on her.”

Kanata’s declaration made Sakura blush. All their classmates, even Kenmochi, watched that sight with smiles.

“I was just messing with you. You know, I could always see that you guys were close. I won’t steal her from you.”
“Geez… then don’t say something like that!”

Later, the tale of a new beauty in the area, who was in a relationship, spread but that was another story.

2. The original is 目黒. Literal meaning: “black eye(s)”. How creative.
3. The original is 剣持. The literal meaning is “sword holder”, which does sound like a pretty sick last name.
