Ten minutes after Ayumu and Mika were on their way, Kanata and Sakura also left their homes and met up close to their front doors.
“Wearing your uniform without your glasses… it’s a fresh look.”
“You think so? But I guess having nothing in front of my eyes and on my ears does feel off.” Sakura made a quick movement as if she was pushing up her glasses.
“I’m looking forward to what everyone will say.”
“I-I don’t think there will be a big reaction. I simply took off my glasses.”
“No… it does look completely different… Hm,” Kanata said with a smile and then suddenly extended his hand towards Sakura.
“D-Do you seriously want to hold hands while walking to school…?”
“Yep, obviously. But we don’t need to, if you don’t want.”
“I… I never said I don’t want to, alright?” Sakura hurriedly replied, when the boy was about to pull away his hand with a somewhat dispirited expression. “I-If you want to do that so much…”
“I do.”
“Uh… a-alright… yeah.”
Sakura’s face turned bright red, as she grasped the slender hand the boy extended to her. His fingers immediately closed, enveloping her palm, and although they hadn’t interlocked their fingers, they were now genuinely holding hands.
“Sh-Shall we go, then?”
“L-Let’s.”
Unaware of the gazes of their grinning mothers on the nearby front doors, the two kids started walking silently.
Shortly after, someone called out to them.
“My, Kanata, Sakura, good morning!”
“Oh… g-good morning, Mrs. Imai!”
“Good… m-morning…”
It was their neighbor who’d called out to their older siblings just a few minutes ago.
“Dear me~, are you protecting Sakura again today, Kanata…? Huh, isn’t there something different about you?” When Mrs. Imai gazed at the two kids, as if she was observing something strange, her eyes suddenly flashed with realization. “Huh… Sakura? What about your glasses?”
“M-My glasses… I left them at home…”
“My, you should quickly go and get them1.”
“N-No, I don’t need them…”
Kanata explained to Mrs. Imai and the other neighbors who were also watching, that ever since this morning, Sakura could see normally “for some unknown reason”.
“That’s… that’s wonderful!”
“Hah… was it a miracle?”
“I don’t know… I heard she was practically blind without those special glasses…”
All those who had listened to the story and knew the two kids seemed happy and gave them their congratulations, but at the same time, they also seemed confused. For the time being, Kanata managed to cajole them into seeing it as a joyous event.
“Can I ask you something else?” Mrs. Imai spoke up. “You’re always holding on to Kanata’s arm, aren’t you, Sakura? But today…”
Her and the other neighbors’ gazes shifted to Sakura’s hand, which held onto Kanata’s. Normally, Kanata let Sakura borrow his arm when they went to and from school and to other places, to help her due to her abnormally poor eyesight which wasn’t improved much even by wearing her glasses.
Once, a special program titled “The boy who helps his blind childhood friend” had aired on TV, so the two of them were just as famous in the region as their older siblings.
“So, is it what it looks like? Did you start dating?”
“Uhm… yes. We did. You’re correct.”
“Huh… you weren’t in a relationship before?”
“On that special, they made it sound as if you guys were engaged… Well, anyone who sees you would think that.”
The comments of the people around them caused Kanata and Sakura to blush fiercely. In fact, they had been teased about this for some time, not just by their classmates but also people they met on the street.
“Anyway, we just saw Ayumu and Mika earlier who also started dating, right?”
“Definitely.”
“We did.”
“Eh… I’m sure that was just a coincidence,” Kanata hurriedly replied.
“A coincidence…? There might be something tying you together… the Joujous and the Magarigis.”
“I guess that’s the only way to put it.”
“Th-That’s true… uhm, we’re late, so we should be on our way to school,” Kanata stammered.
“Y-Yes,” Sakura greed.
The two kids tried to make their escape before their neighbors would delve deeper into the matter and, more importantly, tease them more than they already had.
“Yes, keep studying hard!” Mrs. Imai called after them. “Oh, I thought so before, but you do look a lot like your older sister, Sakura.”
“R-Really!? Thank you for saying that… uhm… see you!”
When someone outside her family said that she resembled her sister, Sakura broke into a smile, letting go of Kanata’s hand while they walked to quickly bowed her head at the neighbors. Then, she immediately took the hand again, as if that was the most natural thing.
After they had walked for a bit, the two kids talked about what they heard just now.
“Hey, do we really resemble each other that much?”
“Well, everyone, including our parents and siblings, says so.”
“I-I see. It’s probably because you’ve always been at my side, Kanata. Uhm… Thank you for always protecting me.”
“S-Sure.”
Although it embarrassed her, Sakura brought her body even closer to the boy’s. He let it happen without any comment.
“So… I resemble Big Sis, after all?”
“That’s what I kept telling you. You should be more confident in yourself.”
“Eh-heh… alright.”

- I get forgetting your glasses when you only need them for reading, but why would you ever not take them if you’re practically blind without them?
