Some time after dinner. Orgo was waiting on the castle’s roof. Normally, the four friends would watch the meteor shower together, but today was different.

“…I hope this goes well,” he muttered.

Whether he succeeded or not, this day would be an important experience for him.

“Uhm… I am sorry to have kept you waiting!”
“Oh. Not your fault, seein’ I called you here.”

When he turned where the voice had come from, Myuri stood there, just as promised. Orgo, who’d been sitting on one of the extravagant benches the roof was outfitted with, shuffled to the side and encouraged her to sit down next to him. Filled with excitement about spending the night here with the one she had feelings for, Myuri took a seat.

“U-Uhm… how will this work?”
“…Well, just wait a bit.”
“Y-Yes.”

The two fell silent. While Orgo cast his eyes down and did his very best to stay calm and suppress his nervousness, Myuri shot him several glances, considering it odd behavior for the usually knightly and confident boy.

Suddenly, she stopped looking his way. She decided to raise her voice.

“Uhm, Orgo?”
“…What’s wrong?”
“Erm… the starfall has started.”

When he heard that, he looked up. She wasn’t wrong, something looking like a river of stars had started to descend.

“You’re right.”
“It looks so pretty…!”

Orgo was captivated by the profile of his childhood friend, illuminated by starlight, as she gazed at the sky. Encouraging himself that this was the moment to act, he clenched his fists in resolve.

“Myuri, I have always-”
“Huh?”
“Nah… it’s nothin’.”

He had been about to say a line taken from the books they had used as a manual for romance, but his mind brimming with the chivalry he’d inherited from his father made it impossible1.

However, besides the fact he made a promise with his best friend to confess to their sweethearts, a night offering such a prime opportunity didn’t come often and he had deliberately invited Myuri here the day before… so he couldn’t just give up. Still, even with these reasons, Orgo couldn’t bring himself to confess to her, although there were some other factors involved.

“Orgo, look at that! There are so many stars streaming down! It’s amazing, truly!”
“…Myuri, I like you.”
“…Huh?”
“I have feelings for you… that’s what I meant.”

Seemingly having made up his mind, Orgo gazed at Myuri’s face, and before she knew it, he had grasped her hand. After being frozen with an expression of shock for around ten seconds, she finally found her words.

“Eh… when you say, you have feelings…”
“Erm… I’m professin’ my love for you… more or less.”
“Huh… Wha~~!?”

The surprised yell shook the roof

“What… you didn’t like it? In that case, my bad.”

Orgo was about to let go of her. However, Myuri caught his hand as he tried to pull it away.

“Uhm… will I be enough for you?”
“That’s what I oughta say! Normally, you should probably write a letter or say some thoughtful words before confessin’, but… I ain’t no good at that.”

When she heard that, Myuri’s cheeks turned red.

“Heh-heh… I-I… like that awkward side of yours, Orgo!”

“Oh~! Do you see that, Ruin? It’s incredible!”
“Yes, it does look rather pretty.”

On the other side of the roof, Ruin and Lilo enjoyed the stars streaking in the night sky. Both of them were leaning against the railing installed on the roof.

“Heh-heh~, at any rate, you did it, didn’t you? You planned to invite me here, so it would be just Myuri and Orgo and he can use that opportunity to confess to her, right?” she guessed with a smile. “As expected of you, Ruin!”
“Well, you’re half right, I guess,” Ruin, the prince of the country, replied while feeling somewhat tense, as he looked at her.
“Eh, only half? Well, either way, right now, Orgo should be confessing his feelings! Those two both have a crush on each other. I might start teasing them about their relationship from tomorrow on,” Lilo spoke with a mischievous grin.

Ruin shook his head.

“Yep, you got that part right.”
“Did I, now? What about the part I got wrong?”
“It’s the reason I invited you here.”

His expression turned serious.

“Huh… that can’t be right, ah-ha-ha… erm… don’t tell me you’re planning to… confess to me?”
“Yes, you’re spot on.”

She fell silent. Paying that no mind, Ruin breathed a sigh.

“Lilo, I have feelings for you.”

He went down on one knee and held out his hand.

“Eh… ah… aaaaaah!” She looked at him in bewilderment. “Ah… right… ah-ha-hah~. Erm… aren’t you a prince? W-Will we even be a good match?”
“You’re the minister’s daughter, aren’t you? We have been great friends ever since we were kids. I can’t think of anyone better suited than you. Can’t we become more than just friends?”

Still in his kneeling position, Ruin never let his gaze stray from Lilo’s face. She got flustered and took a step back.

“Ah… t-there must be others, no? N-Noble girls, for example… or girls who are more beautiful than me… or girls with better disposition…”
“You think so? But such things don’t matter. I am interested in you, Lilo.”
“…Uh…” She blushed. “I… I also… uhm… have feelings… for you… B-But, will I be enough for you? Won’t you regret it later?”
“Somehow… I don’t think so. I am fine with you, Lilo.”
“Uh…”

Her face turned pinker than her hair, creating an optical illusion as if it had disappeared2. Finally, she slowly took the prince’s outstretched hand.

“…Then… uhm… please… treat me well,” she stammered.
“I will, forever…”

After taking her hand, he immediately stood up.

“Hah… I was so tense. Even though I read all those romance novels and practiced…”
“Huh, you were? But I don’t think you could’ve been any cooler than that, you know? If you ask me, that was a really princely display.”
“Ha-ha… you think so?”

Ruin brought a pleasant smile to his face.

Footnotes:

  1. Wasn’t wooing noble ladies a huge part of being a knight? Maybe that was only for European countries and it was different in Asia.
  2. This might also mean that she was under the optical illusion that she turned redder/pinker than her hair.
