“Huh…? What do you mean?”

Was there something about the lineage…? Right, Samaeyl also kept talking about the Mephilad family.

“Oh? You don’t know that, even though you defeated Samaeyl? …Well, she wasn’t that chatty, I guess. To someone she considered an enemy, she’d just reply with stuff like ‘I forgot’ or ‘I don’t know’.”

…That does sound spot on. Well, whatever, I do have things I want to ask Surtr, so I guess I’ll listen to him.

“Eh! Big Bro, did you already defeat another evil god!?”
“Ah… didn’t I mention that?”
“No, I don’t think you said something like that…”

Oh, I see. I assumed he’d noticed Surtr talk about Samaeyl and the hero, but looks like he didn’t.

“Yep. As a matter of fact, I sealed and then destroyed the Demon God Samayel.”
“I-I see… Then this will be your second, Ayu-nii?”
“You got it. That’s the reason we came here as reinforcements.”

On second thought, isn’t this kind of an incredible achievement? Well, that’s not worth worrying about, all I want is to live an enjoyable life together with Mika.

“Hey, can I continue?”
“Oh, sure. Go ahead.”

I wonder, what does he want to talk about?

“I assume it’s frustrating to still not know anything, even after bringing down two evil gods, right? So, I‘ll be nice enough to tell you a few things. It’s MY way of paying respect to the hero.”

I didn’t necessarily agree with him, but if he wanted to tell me something, it might be better to listen. I put a finger on my lips to signal Mika and our siblings to keep quiet for now.

“Are you listening? To begin with, there are three evil gods. You probably know that the ones opposing them are the hero, the sage, and the guide, right?”
“Yes.”

Well, it’s not like I fall into any of these three groups.

“Then, the sage is summoned by the Zeggray family. The hero is discovered by the Mephilad family. And the guide is appointed by the Luige¹ family… While the hero, sage, and guide certainly are a threat to us since they are able to seal or even destroy us, they aren’t the really scary part.”

Huh? What does he mean by that? Kanata probably gets it.
I turned to him and urged him with my eyes to enlighten us.

“…So, what you’re saying is that the families that discover, summon, or appoint those people are more threatening?” he tried to confirm.
“You got it.”

I see, those families certainly were more threatening. If you compared one strong magic beast as an isolated event with that very same magic beast being born every few years, the latter was much more dangerous².

“Huh, but,” Sakura mumbled, “after eradicating the Zeggray family, Mephilad would be next… that’s what you’re saying, right, Surtr? Us sages, who are enemies from your perspective, are summoned by the Zeggray family, so you destroyed said family… I can follow that reasoning… but why would you try to end the Mephilad line, too, who’s responsible for the hero?”

It looked like Sakura had doubts. Maybe since this had hit on an important core part, Surtr fell silent.

“We have various ways to get you to talk.”
“Tch… fine.”

My attempt at threatening him managed to loosen Surtr’s lips. Although he was sealed in the spear, so it wasn’t like he had lips right now.

“We evil gods more or less consider each other comrades, alright? Isn’t it normal to destroy an enemy that either defeated or threatens a friend? Besides, the hero, sage, and guide are all plenty threatening, even to the evil gods they aren’t made to defeat, you see? Heh-heh-heh-heh! I was praised by Kanata.

Surtr, on the other hand had fallen silent once more. Since I couldn’t see his expression, I had no idea what he was thinking.

“…Gah-ha-ha, that such a thing would be possible.”

I guess I am awesome, after all. Or rather, abnormal!

“Looks like it!”

Several seconds passed before he finally continued.

“Gah-ha-ha… I see, I see. Then… do you have anything you’re unclear about? I will answer until that guy… until Shuu wakes up,” Surtr suggested.

Hm~… What was the stuff I wanted to know…?
Right, Reincarnation. I need to ask Surtr why he knows about divine grade items and Reincarnation.

“How is it that you have knowledge about Reincarnation… and divine grade items? No one else seems to know about those things.”

I thought Mika especially might have some questions, so I turned to look at them, but they all shook their heads. They didn’t say anything.

“Gah-ha! It’d have been over either way. Look, the esteemed sage is waking up.”

The check the veracity of Surtr’s words, all four of us looked at Shuu. It was true.

Shuu frowned, with his eyes still closed, and after writhing in apparent agony for a moment, he turned to the side. He threw out his well-muscled limbs, and the fingers on his thick, rugged hands twitched.

“Shuu!!”

I grabbed and shook him. My best friend slowly opened his eyes.

1. The original is ルイジュ (ruiju). Other possible translations would be “Luge” or “Rouge”. I might change it if we ever find out more about that family.
2. That might make sense for the sage and guide, but the hero is chosen by the world. Even without the royals, there would still be a hero (unless the royals are needed to somehow activate the title that makes the hero).
3. What about all the stuff Samaeyl never answered? Like the reasons for the evil gods to act as they do?
