“Your Majesty!!?” the knight called Kyrian yelled.
What do I do in this situation?
As for what happened to the king… well, you knew it when you looked at him. At any rate, it’s a good thing the others got away…
Until just before, Kanata was… crushing him verbally, or something like that. At any rate, he attacked the king with words. He probably was trying to expose the king’s ambition, while dealing with the Black God in a safe way.
However, something changed when he tried to persuade Dace one-on-one. I couldn’t hear it well from my place, but it resulted in her breaking the spear Gungnir with a black, weirdly shaped sword she summoned, and then black smoke coming out of the broken spear and invading the king’s body.
All things considered, that had to be the Black God, Surtr.
Ain’t this really bad?
As for the king… we couldn’t save him.
He might’ve been someone not worth savin’… but if you have the ability… you kinda have to. I gotta think about that later.
At any rate, in our current situation, our last ray of hope – Kanata with his teleportation – had frozen up. It was the first time I saw it, but Ayumu had told me a long time ago that “when something unexpected happens, Kanata freezes up”. Dace probably told him something shocking that made him go rigid. Sakura was still desperately calling out to him.
I feel bad for the king, but I’m sure glad the Black God wasn’t goin’ for Kanata… I don’t wanna imagine what would’ve happened.
The ones currently able to move were the knight leaders, Rir, and I.
However, I ain’t got no clue about those knights’ abilities. I never saw what they can do from up close. Will they be able to hold their own against some evil god, an opponent strong enough, they went outta their way to summon us sages?
Rir, on the other hand, had gone stiff from too much tension and shock. It was clear to see, she was frozen in place.
If she’s like that, she probably won’t even draw out half her normal power.
“Ah… aah… ah… aAh… AAH… AAAAH!” the king was screaming.
The color of his long hair gradually changed to white. He was groaning and clutching his face, as if in pain.
Should I try Restoration Magic on him?
I cast my healing magic, which wasn’t very strong1, on the suffering king. There was no reaction at all.
…At this point, if I had Gungnir, seeing I allocated points into my spear skill, I could probably (with internal apologies) stab the king and seal Surtr. However, said crucial spear had been destroyed by Dace.
How are we supposed to seal him now?
When I thought that, the king stilled and stopped groaning. He took the hand from his face and used it to brush back his disheveled hair. He then let said hand drop, as if languidly surrendering it to gravity, and slowly opened his eyes.
They were black and white, and both of them had lava-like red in them… To sum it up in a single word, they looked creepy. He no longer felt like that weird, lazy king at all. Instead, he already had the looks of a video game boss… I guess? That’s how it felt.
“Ah… phew. Aah… ah, aah. Phew… I, I~, I, I‘m really… yep… I feel great, that’s awesome!”
Suddenly, the king spoke. No, it wasn’t the king who had said that. It had been the Black God, Surtr, inside him.
“Hm… well, he does have some stats, I guess. You could say he has both skills and money2, but… I mean, come on, isn’t this guy a total small fry!?” Surtr started monologuing. “Seriously… stop it… that’s awful. He’s way too weak, right? This foolish king just keeps causing ME trouble.”
He totally called the king a small fry… Well, if he is, that’s how it is. He got my sympathies.
Surtr kept glaring at us with his bright red eyes wide open. After giving us a quick look over, he nodded in satisfaction, while continuing his monologue.
“Well… you guys were nice enough to leave only the powerful people here… This~ is~ the~ BEST~~~!! …Don’t you think so, too?” he exclaimed, as he tuned to Sakura with a grin.
Is he plannin’ to do somethin’ to her!?
When I was about to rush to her side, both her and Kanata had already disappeared. Or rather, they were next to me before I knew it.
Teleportation…
Then, Kanata, who had come to his senses unnoticed, stood in front of Sakura, as if to shield her.
Lookin’ at that kinda reminds of Ayumu and Mika...
“Hey there, esteemed Sage Kanata3? How dare you suggest launching ME into the SKY? Huh, what might it be? You were frozen until a moment ago, and you decided to show off in front of your girlfriend only now? Eeek! So cool~~!”
Can’t this guy just shut up?
TL notes:
Surtr finally makes his entrance and wastes no time in riling up our heroes.
In the original, he talks using a mix of Hiragana and Katakana. I could localize this by alternating normal with capitalized letters, but that’s a pain, since I first have to write everything normal for the spellcheck to work, and then change it by randomly replacing some letters with their capitalized version. Plus, it’s also annoying to read. So, Instead I’m sticking to the gimmick of emphasizing his personal pronouns. Just imagine his voice sounding off in addition to that.
Footnotes:
- Maybe compared to Sakura’s skills. It’s still SS-Rank and Shuu also has an insane spellpower stat.
- The original is スキルも金にものを言わせてと言った感じか. Thanks to Kemm for explaining that sentence.
- Surtr switches to polite speech here, likely to mock Kanata who mostly talks that way.
