“Miss Dace, please give me the spear. I will take responsibility for dealing with the Black God.”

Ignoring the several steps distance between them, Kanata deliberately teleported to the seeress. It was to demonstrate his power in front of everyone.

“…Don’t do it… Don’t give it to him, Dace! You can’t!” Loukis shouted, voice tinged with anger. “This brat might really manage it!”

There was no longer anyone who could deny that the king was planning to use the Black God for something.

“…It’s true,” Dace mumbled, still devoid of any expression, and held out the spear horizontally.

Everyone, including Loukis, was now expecting her to politely hand it to Kanata.

The king got up from his throne and closed in on her and Kanata. With a furious look, he stretched out his hand to take the spear from her, but at a certain distance from her, his hand was repelled by something invisible. It was another feature of Kanata’s skill.

“Damn it… Kanata, hey Kanata, undo this! Can’t you hear me!? Dace, don’t give him the spear. Stop, don’t do it!”

Even though his hand had been deflected, Loukis stretched it out towards the invisible wall, again and again. Still, it never reached Kanata and Dace.

“Miss Dace…”
“Say, Kanata, my dear. Could I say… just two things?” the seeress murmured, still holding out the spear.

While giving her a business-like smile, the boy stopped his hand which had been extended towards the spear.

“What might that be?”
“First, little old me’s prophecies, or rather, my future knowledge is always correct… Until now, I merely never put everything into words, you see.”

As she spoke, she lowered the spear and took one hand off it. She then reverently raised said hand, as if she was about to grip the holding strap on a train.

“And the second: You do have a good head on your shoulders, my boy, but you lack experience. You still have mental weak spots. Well, you’re only 14 years old, so that probably can’t be helped.”

When she finished speaking, she was suddenly holding a strange, black shape, which could just barely be identified as a sword1, in her raised hand. An instant later, she swung it down at Gungnir. Kanata was about to stop her, but when her next words hit him, he froze in his tracks.

“When you think about it, you should’ve quickly taken this spear from me and put your plan into action. Your older brother acts much more unpredictably than you, doesn’t he? Even so, an evil god’s real body… you’d call it a spirit in Japan, so sending it to the bottom of the ocean wouldn’t have held much meaning. Though flinging it into outer space2 gave me a fright.”

Kanata’s mind couldn’t keep up. He was unable to process what was happening in front of him.

He had the tendency to freeze up mentally, when faced with shocking events… and this was now used against him. The impact of hearing this, even though he’d never told anyone in this world about his brother. This alone was enough.

Before he knew it, the black, abnormally shaped sword had disappeared from Dace’s hand. In exchange, a piece of Gungnir was rolling on the floor.

“Y-You… what the hell are you doing!?” Loukis yelled at Dace. “Now, the Black God will come back to life!? To begin with, how did you even break Gungnir? Stop messing with me! Where are we supposed to find anyone who satisfies the conditions for the Black God to…”

When he got that far, Loukis suddenly seemed to notice something, and his expression changed. Pitch-black smoke was emerging from the broken spear.

Shuu, recognizing this as something dangerous, frantically started sending messages to Kanata, while urging the kingdom’s officials to flee the room. Said officials, while perplexed, heeded Shuu’s words and started doing what they should’ve done already.

Kyrian and Kruzel didn’t flee, drew their weapons, and leveled them on the black haze. Both of them urged Kanata telepathically to withdraw temporarily.

Rir didn’t know what she should do, so for now, she summoned her axe Jörmungandr and readied it.

The moment the black haze appeared, Sakura rushed to Kanata’s side and frantically called out to the boy, whose brain had stopped working.

“Kanata! Kanata, we have to flee! Please… Kanata! …Please… I beg you… you have to move…”

But despite all her shouting, her voice never reached the boy.

“H-Hey, don’t tell me it’s me…? Seeress… you planned this… from the very start…” The smoke closed in on Loukis, ignoring the barrier Kanata had created. “Stop… stop… stop it~~!? Don’t go in, stay away~~~!? Hey, anyone, Sages! Kyrian, Kruzel… anyone… anyone stop… stop this thing- Urgh gah grgh ugh gah~~~.”

The haze entered the king’s body.
Kyrian, Kruzel, and Shuu tried to save him, but they were too late. Or rather, the haze’s intrusion was too fast.

When she saw that, Dace dropped her previously blank expression and smiled, while watching the still frozen Kanata. Then, she disappeared without a trace, as if she had been using the boy’s teleportation ability.

TL notes:
Dace’s masterplan finally comes to fruition. For all of Kanata’s alleged suspicions about her, he sure let his guard down. Granted, we’re talking outside context problem here, but did he never even consider that she might be faking her ineptitude?

Honestly, this chapter would’ve been a total shock if the author hadn’t spoiled everything about her in advance. As I said before, a huge missed opportunity.

Footnotes:

  1. Wait, don’t tell me Alim forgot to take Droprot after chapter 180 and Dace swiped it? Though that sword could only destroy swords, not spears, so I guess it might simply be something similar.
  2. Here, she uses Kanji for the word (same as for Japan in the previous sentence) implying that she knows exactly what it is.
