“Leave this place at once!”
“Nah. Too much trouble. Fumitsuki, Lullus, don’t you dare leave. I won’t forgive you for abandoning your duty of looking after me.”
“What…?”
The black-haired, black-eyed man was completely stunned. Since that ability should have worked on both Fumitsuki and Lullus, it made sense that he’d be shocked it didn’t work this time. Fumitsuki and Lullus themselves realized they’d been about to leave and looked just as surprised. Everyone seemed shocked, except for me and the red-eyed girl standing behind the man.
Fumitsuki, still looking apologetic, opened her mouth.
“I’m sorry. For some reason, I suddenly felt like I had to leave this place.”
“My apologies.”
“Well, to be fair, that man before us is the one who wiped out a Demigod. You can’t really blame yourselves.”
They were the last remaining people in this world. Aside from these two, there wasn’t a single living creature left. Not even an insect. It had been decades since the world reached this state. I wondered what they felt about it all. The thought itself amused me. Anyway, our first contact had been… less than ideal. As I wondered what to do next, the red-eyed girl began to speak.
“Nice to meet you. I am Rurino. I’ve long been the Demon Lord of this world. The black-haired one is Nil. As you may have noticed, he can use special powers. So, who exactly are you?”
“I’m a poor little god of endings, sent here for work. I was told to come witness this world’s conclusion. The other two are my attendants.”
“A god… Are you related to the god who once ruled this world?”
Rurino’s voice grew cautious. Understandably so, she and Nil had a complicated history with the Demigod of this world. After all, this world, created by Chaos, was an absolute headache by design. But that was how it was always supposed to be.
“The one you erased was, by our standards, a Demigod. They served as a sort of manager, a god in name, but the true creator of this world couldn’t care less whether they vanished or not. And of course, we have nothing to do with that one. We were simply sent here by coincidence.”
“Then why did you come? There’s nothing left in this world.”
“Would you believe me if I said we’re just here to observe?”
“Observe?”
Nil repeated, frowning.
“Yes. To watch how the two of you will bring this world to its end.”
“You’re not here to stop us?”
“Stopping you now wouldn’t change anything. Though I do think it’s a bit of a waste… After all, I love sleeping more than anything.”
“Sleeping…?” Nil repeated, baffled.
They could interpret that however they wanted. I didn’t care if they understood or not.
“Well, from what I understand, you both intend to end this world with your own hands, so go right ahead. We’re not the kind of fragile beings who’d be harmed by a world’s destruction.”
Having spoken directly with them, my business was done. I called Fumitsuki and Lullus, and we left the mansion behind. The last expressions I saw on those two, the final people of this world, were ones of utter bewilderment.
◇◇◇
The next day, we watched the two from afar. Despite being human and a demon, they floated silently into the sky, holding hands and speaking quietly to each other. Maybe they were chanting. When they finally fell silent, a blinding sphere of light appeared between them, small as a basketball. It descended slowly, gently, toward the ground.
After what felt both like a long and a short time, the light reached the earth and sank into it. The pair gazed down at the light, peaceful and satisfied, as though they’d accomplished everything they wanted. Rurino leaned against Nil, clinging to him like a lover. They looked like a happy couple. Fumitsuki, more interested in them than the light, was staring fixedly at the pair. So it was a good thing they couldn’t see us.
Not long after the light touched the ground, a massive explosion followed. In an instant, the entire world was engulfed in white light. As the two figures in the sky drew closer and their faces almost met in a final kiss, I took Fumitsuki and Lullus and left that world behind.

“Fini, that was so cruel!”
“I want to sleep, you know?”
“Not until you tell me why you did that!”
Back in my own world, in my own bed, Fumitsuki was scolding me. Well, I suppose being pulled out in the middle of the climax was like being dragged out of a movie theater before the ending, so I understood her frustration. I could have ignored her and gone back to sleep, but I decided it wouldn’t hurt to explain a little.
“Those two were despised by their world. They’d been in love for thousands of years, but could never be together. So they destroyed the world just to share a brief moment together.”
“That’s… a really long time. Thousands of years, huh?”
“Nearly ten thousand, actually. But for humans, that’s basically eternity.”
“Why were they hated?”
That part was tricky to explain.
“That world was designed so humans and demons would fight forever. A powerful human king and a powerful demon king would always be born, and endless war would repeat. But then a mischievous god brought in three people from another world and gave them absurd powers, siding them with the humans.”
To be honest, mischievous god was putting it mildly.
“With their help, the humans pushed the demons back to half the continent, and then built a massive wall dividing the lands so the two races couldn’t fight anymore.”
“So the world lost its purpose because humans and demons couldn’t fight?”
“Exactly. And so the world, and its managing demigod, grew to despise those ‘transferred’ humans. Then, the new demon queen with red eyes decided she wouldn’t fight humans, despite her nature. She was supposed to be consumed by the desire to kill the humans, but she resisted it. Over time, unable to love each other freely, they came to resent the world itself.”
“That’s a tragic love story.”
“It is.”
Actually, there was a whole thing where the demigod, grimacing in madness, tried to get rid of the two by using reincarnators in underhanded ways, only to be betrayed by one of the reincarnators he’d created and wiped out by that black one, but I guess I didn’t need to explain all that.
A world that prioritized its rules over its own survival was truly a creation worthy of Chaos.
“Still, if things had gone on, the world would have probably lived out its natural lifespan.”
“Really!?”
“Yes. They were maintaining the world just enough to stay together as long as possible until they could finally destroy it themselves.”
“Wow… that’s incredible.”
“It is. And honestly, I didn’t feel right intruding on their last moments, so I came back early.”
“Well… I guess that’s fair.”
“Now then, goodnight.”
“Yeah. Goodnight.”
