Before we were summoned to this world, we were all ordinary high school students. After going to school in the morning, our friend group would gather, and we’d take classes thinking we hated this. We would then chat a lot during recess, which only lasted 10 minutes. I—Sakura Komura—was such an ordinary high school student.
I would always chat with Natchan, aka Natsuki Shiromae; Akki, aka Akiho Suzuki; and Himehime, aka Tsubaki Someno. When I was summoned to this world, I didn’t feel lonely because all four of us were together, and I enjoyed the first month. Fortunately, we were well-matched when we formed our party, so we spent a lot of time together during training.
I thought that defeating the Demon King wouldn’t be that difficult and that I’d be able to return to Earth easily. But for some reason, that was no longer the case.
And while I said for some reason, that reason was quite obvious. It was because no one had helped him. Although I wanted to make an excuse, that wouldn’t bring him back to life. But I still wanted to make an excuse. I wanted to know why he hadn’t told us.
When I asked this, while I was still able to talk with everyone, Himehime made a bitter face and simply muttered, “Why, indeed.”
It felt as if she was accusing me of something, but I couldn’t know her true intentions.

Then came that hellish day. The day I, we, killed a person for the first time. The many screams, the shouts, the blood, the smell, the sensations left on my hands—they all still come to me as nightmares.
I killed a boy about my brother’s age.
I killed a woman about my mother’s age.
I killed a man about my father’s age.
I killed, and killed, and killed…
Even though I wanted to stop, I couldn’t because of the slave ring, and my hands turned bright red.
When there was no one left alive in the village but us, many of our classmates looked sick. I was one of them, but I think I was better than the others, thanks to my Lively skill1. At the time, I thought that a greater hell could not exist. However, I soon learned that what happened that day was just the beginning.

“Sakura, left!”
I heard Akki’s voice, and I hurriedly set up my big shield on my left side. Immediately after that, the mass of flame that flew in was blocked by the shield, fizzling out. The impact numbed my arm.
Seeing the opening I’d created, the member of the Demon Tribe swung his sword at me.
“Whaaaa!”
I yelled out in fear, thrusting my sword, and as I did so, I felt my sword pierce the Demon’s flesh. I killed again. I’d ended up killing once again.
Himehime ran past me while I was still stunned and slaughtered a man of the Demon tribe.
Akki’s arrows and Natchan’s magic flew from behind me. I was the vanguard. The two of them were in the rear guard, and Himehime alternated between the middle and the vanguard. I had been told that if I played my role properly, it wouldn’t be easy to lose, but it wasn’t that simple.
I was being targeted. There were enemies out there with a clear intention to kill me. That was very frightening. I honestly didn’t want to do this anymore.
What was the Demon Tribe anyway? Weren’t they subordinates of the Demon Lord? The enemies of the world? Weren’t they supposed to be something that looked like a monster? Something that one could clearly recognize as an enemy?
The members of the Demon Tribe that were fighting us now had red eyes and black skin, but they were no different from ordinary people. I couldn’t help but wonder if these people wanted to take over the world.
This wasn’t a fight to save the world; it was just a war.
I shook my head at the thought.
I was already aware of this. The Fraus Kingdom had summoned us here to wage war. They just wanted to use us as soldiers. We didn’t know how to get food, we didn’t have a place to live, and we had no choice but to follow the Fraus Kingdom’s orders.
“Sakura!”
I heard Akki’s voice again. I looked up and saw a spear looming over my shoulder, slipping past my shield. Then, my shoulder got hot.
“Aaaaa! I don’t want to do this anymore…”
It hurts; it hurts so much. A spear pierced my shoulder. I don’t want to do this anymore. Why? Why did this have to happen?
I won’t say I won’t study anymore. I’ll listen to my mother. I’ll also help. I’ll also try and get into a good university. So, so, please. Just let me wake up!
“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!”
My eyes turned bright red.
◇◇◇
When I came to my senses, everything around me was bright red. I smelled blood, and I too was covered in red. My body ached. It felt as though every muscle in my body was sore, and I didn’t want to move an inch.
The wound on my shoulder was nowhere to be seen.
“Sakura, are you okay?” Natchan asked.
“Yes… What happened?”
Natchan’s face wasn’t the mischievous one I remembered from high school; she looked very tired. She looked like this ever since coming to this world and beginning to live this life.
“You took them all down, Sakura.”
“I did? I don’t remember.”
“I see… It’s better that you don’t know then2.”
Natchan, looking into the distance, told me to check my surroundings again. I was surrounded by a mass of bodies, a mass that I had created.
