An elderly Elf had been locked away. There was no way someone like that could be insignificant. If I wanted information from them, I knew I had to make contact. Given that there was no one other than him there, I couldn’t listen in to small talk or some other intimate conversation.
If this were a game, he could speak to himself without realizing I was there, especially if I tried provoking him while I was invisible. But unfortunately, he wasn’t an NPC. I observed him, using Stealth to make sure I wouldn’t be caught. Yet, he didn’t even complain once.
Given the situation, I somewhat expected him to say something along the lines of “Who the hell is there?!” after which I’d reply with “You’re good. You were able to see through my Stealth.” but that didn’t happen.
(Damn it… If I could only provoke some kind of reaction to break his silence.)
I could’ve just talked to him outright, but that would’ve been too risky. Above all, this body of mine was quite a hassle to handle. It wasn’t wrong to even call it an antique.
(If it’s an antique, will it get better if I oil it up then?)
Honestly, given that this body was God’s creation, it was possible that it had existed for hundreds or even thousands of years.
If that were the case, it made sense that I wouldn’t fully adapt to it in just a few months. Even a normal human struggled to control their body right after being born. It wasn’t like babies automatically knew how to walk.
What I was trying to say was that none of this was my fault. That’s what I told myself, though it sounded like a flimsy excuse in my head. As I pondered this, something suddenly came to mind. Among my skills, there was one that stood out as unique. It was known as Ancient. At first, I’d struggled with its name, not knowing what it would do, but contrary to that, its effects proved to be quite straightforward. It was a skill that made it possible for me to use ancient things.
Putting it in Earth terms, I’d know exactly what that out-of-place object was and how to use it. And whether something was ancient or not was judged by the current point in time. The skill could be used on anything that was generally considered old or was over 100 years old from the current point in time.
In other words, with this skill, if I decided to use a pager, I could use it exceptionally well. I wasn’t entirely sure how it would work in practice, but I knew it could be incredibly effective. That said, I only knew what a pager was and that it existed; I didn’t know how to use it. I knew it could send a letter, but that was about it.
Getting back to the main subject. Given that my body was an antique, it was likely possible that I could use my skills on it. If I could, it might make controlling it far easier. That thought gave me the motivation to try. The result, however, was underwhelming—less effective than I had hoped.
Still, there was some improvement. I gained better control over my body. I could finally adjust finger flicks to be finger flicks level. It wouldn’t be obliterating any other Wind Dragons. But the more skills I used at once, the harder it was to manage them.
Not that it mattered too much. Even without the skills, I could rely on pure status to push through.
Satisfied with the experiment’s outcome, I decided to give up and talk to the elf. Giving up was important at times. Be it giving up on humanity or giving up on being a Demigod. After all, none of it mattered since I’d long since given up on this world.
“Hello, are you still alive?”
“What do you want?”
The elf’s voice had way more vigor in it than I’d expected. It radiated an air of authority, one befitting a ruler. It felt even more regal than the voice of the current king. Well, it wasn’t as if I hadn’t already expected this outcome, but he was quite healthy.
“You looked like you’d know a lot, so I came to talk to you.”
“Is this some kind of joke? Well, so be it. It’s not like I have anything else to do apart from waiting for the world’s demise. If it’ll prove to be a relief for this endless boredom, then I’ll gladly talk with you.”
He was willing to talk as long as I told him something entertaining. Still, this was my first time meeting this Elf. I didn’t know what he considered entertaining. He seemed cautious, which wasn’t surprising. He did mention waiting for the world to collapse—perhaps he’s already given up like me.
“How about this? The seasons will change twenty more times before the world collapses. Is that considered a long time from an Elven perspective, former King?”
At this, the presumed former king’s eyes seemed to sparkle with interest, showing that I’d caught his attention.
“What do you know?” he asked.
“I don’t mind sharing that with you, but I want you to give me your word that you won’t tell anyone else about me.”
“You do not need to worry. No one will believe me either way. Actually, no. There was one person that came here to talk with me. But we just talked, and I sent him away.”
“Do you promise me?”
“I promise.”
With that, the contract was sealed. Although I was worried about the information going to Fraus, I didn’t really mind talking with the elf here.
“You asked me what I knew, right? Well, I can say for sure that the people in this world won’t live to see another 20 years.”
“Can you prove that?”
“Seeing this will probably convince you.”
I said, showing my real status to the elf. While doing so, it struck me that I hadn’t checked my status in quite a while. Seeing the old man’s eyes widen in surprise, I couldn’t help but want to check my status as well.
