I feel like a future I once gave up on is finally coming back to me. The day I became the Chosen Child, my body stopped being my own. I was to become a vessel—one destined to slumber for eons until my strength gave out. I knew it was little better than being offered up as a human sacrifice… and I had made peace with that.
But then those people—those gamers—told me I could live a normal life again. That’s why they’re fighting against that dreadful god.
…A future. For so long, I believed that was something forever out of my reach. But now, I catch myself thinking about it again—wondering what I’ll do once there’s no wicked god left to seal away.
Maybe I’ll meet someone I like… fall in love… and live a full, content life. That doesn’t sound so bad, does it? Or maybe I’ll travel the world—see how much it’s changed after all this time. Just imagining it fills me with excitement.
And truthfully, no one is more surprised by that than I am. At the same time, that very excitement has made me realize something. I’m… afraid. Afraid of falling asleep again—alone, unsure if I’ll ever wake. And I know I’m not the only one who feels that way.
So… there’s something I must do.
◇◇◇
“EX Drive! Seraph Flügel!!”
At the rear lines of the players, Lycoris began preparing her ultimate spell.
“Sara, cover Lycoris while she charges up!”
“Understood. Lycoris, I’ll protect you.”
“Ah—thanks, Mama!”
As luminous wings composed of shifting geometric shapes formed behind Lycoris, she dropped to one knee to begin casting. In that moment, she was locked in place—unable to move or defend herself—so Sara stood guard over her.
Crim couldn’t help but smile at the sight of the mother-daughter pair, before turning her attention back to Cthulhu. She could see the ranged players continuing to unleash volleys of magic and arrows at the monstrous boss, while others sprinted forward to strike from close range.
“Frey, all of you in the backline—keep firing until it’s too dangerous to do so!”
“Yeah! Let’s give him hell! Use everything—no holding back! EX Drive—Gatling Cast!”
Frey thrust out his hand, and six spectral grimoires materialized in a circle around it. It was his EX Drive: Gatling Cast—a spell he had once described to Crim.
It charged up magic into each grimoire, which then fired in rapid succession until his MP was depleted—though the cost of each spell was amplified by 1.5x. The sheer power was fitting for an ultimate ability.
“Cyclon Drive, charging up! Rahhh!!”
“Let’s do this! We’re fighting alongside the Demon Lords now!”
With Frey unleashing Gatling Cast, and Shao activating Mirror Idea to rapidly cast spells in tandem, the rest of the players followed suit—unleashing their most powerful abilities all at once.
It was the first time in Destiny Unchain Online that so many high-tier spells were cast simultaneously—and it triggered a never-before-seen phenomenon, with surging energy and dazzling sparks lighting up the battlefield.
“Wh-what is that?!”
“Did… did the air just combust from excess mana?!”
Over twenty high-level spells collided mid-air, fusing into a massive, blazing sphere that engulfed Cthulhu entirely. When the Wind Magic spell Cyclon Drive added its force to the chaos, it tipped the scales—triggering what could only be described as a Mana Burst.
A gigantic plasma sphere of unstable mana exploded against the Great Old One, slamming into him with such force that he dropped to one knee—his colossal head crashing closer to the ground.
The rear guard had spent all their MP. Now, it was the frontline’s turn.
“Crim! Fox girl! Anyone who’s got the guts—follow me!”
“Wait—what?!”
“R-right away!!”
Sorleon, sprinting ahead, gave the sudden order. Crim and Hinagiku quickly broke formation to follow him, charging into the fray.
Behind them, Suzaku, Kasumi, and a few others followed—still a bit uncertain about where they were headed, but united by their trust in their leader.
“I’ll get all of you straight to his head! Hit him with everything you’ve got!”
“I wouldn’t ask for more—but the path ahead isn’t exactly clear!”
“Heh. That’s what I’m here for!”
Dozens of tentacles burst forth from Cthulhu’s body, writhing and lashing out to stop Sorleon and those following him. They were so many that cutting through them seemed impossible—but even so, Crim stepped forward to try.
Before she could strike, Sorleon moved in front of her, intercepting the tentacles himself.
“Just keep going! Deathrealm Edge!!”
In an instant, a strange silence blanketed the thirty meters surrounding Sorleon. Crim couldn’t even begin to comprehend what had just happened. All she could see was that every tentacle entering that space was torn to shreds—completely obliterated.
“My EX Drive doesn’t work well against this boss,” Sorleon called out, “so instead—let me show you something else!”
“Is that…?”
“Heh. If I may borrow your phrasing—this is my own Spell Art.”
“…You damned b̲a̲s̲t̲a̲r̲d̲.”
Somehow, he had managed to craft his own Spell Art—just like Crim had briefly demonstrated to him once. That was the nature of their rivalry: no matter how far ahead she felt, Sorleon would always catch up—or even surpass her.
It was frustrating, but also deeply motivating. That contradiction left Crim with complicated feelings… and yet, she found herself smiling.
One day, I’ve got to have a proper rematch with him—to settle once and for all who’s the best.
With that lighthearted thought lingering, Crim raised her hand toward the sky.
“Come—Ephemeral Spectral Swords!!”
The weapons she had scattered across the battlefield earlier all transformed into glowing crimson blades, swirling around her like loyal sentinels.
“And next—Ragnarok Weapon!!”
Channeling her mana into the ring on her finger—Shape Shifter TPH-R—it flared with golden light, morphing into a powerful weapon.
“Me too, me too! EX Drive—Divine Azure Fireblade!!”
With burning determination, Hinagiku drew a blazing tachi of blue flames from her palm. After that, everyone turned to look at Suzaku—the only one who had yet to unleash anything flashy.
“…You’re looking a bit plain, huh.”
“Is that so-called indomitable spirit all thou hast to offer?”
“Shut up! You think I can gain that much power in just a few days?! Don’t lump me in with degenerates like you!”
A vein throbbed on Suzaku’s forehead as he shot a glare at Crim and Sorleon—both staring at him expectantly, as if waiting to see his secret trump card.
“Ughh… Fine, you win! GRAAAAHHH! Dragon Type!!”
With a roar, Suzaku’s body was consumed by a blazing crimson aura. His red hair seemed to catch fire, and two horns—identical in shape to Fafnir’s—emerged from his head. A pair of wings spread out from his back, also resembling the Corrupted Dragon’s.
That was Dragon Type—Suzaku’s ultimate ability. By invoking it, he imbued himself with the blood of the Corrupted Dragon Fafnir, temporarily changing his race into that of a dragon.
“There—happy now?!”
“Ewww…”
“I guess that’s what three days without touching grass does to a man…”
“Suzaku turned into a dragon?! That’s awesome!!”
“What the hell is wrong with all of you?!”
They descended into bickering (though one of them looked on with sparkling admiration). Yet even in the middle of that chaotic exchange, they managed to dodge the massive arm that Cthulhu swung down upon them.
Without missing a beat, they used that very arm as a ramp—racing forward, ready to settle things once and for all with the Great Old One…
