The ground shook as the towering creature let out an agonizing shriek and sank to the bottom of the ocean.
The players gathered on what little solid ground remained, watching with bated breath. They stayed still until the last of the monstrous fins, curled as if trying to grasp something, vanished under the water. Then, everyone let out sighs of relief. Those were the final moments of the monster with a gigantic fish head that had been guarding the gate to the last floor.
“…We lost around half the group to the sea,” someone muttered.
“Yes… We can’t forget that our victory was only achieved thanks to their sacrifice,” Sorleon said solemnly.
He looked at the survivors of the large-scale raid battle, mourning those who had been lost to the sea during the fight. Crim, standing beside him, nodded in agreement.
The boss had regularly struck the ground during the battle, destroying pieces of the arena and causing them to sink. The arena had been quite large at the start, but as it shrank, players began struggling to find stable ground to stand on. Some valiant players entrusted the rest of the fight to the stronger ones, like Crim and Sorleon, by becoming decoys. They jumped into the water, distracting the boss with their sacrifice.
The surviving players recognized their bravery. In a show of respect, they removed their hats or helmets and stood in silence for a moment.
They had all played the role of daredevils. Luckily, even the players who had been defeated would still receive their share of the loot, so they wouldn’t leave empty-handed.
“Still, who would’ve thought that the upper levels focused so much on rivalry and selfishness, but the deeper we went, the more it shifted toward collaboration.” “Hmm… It’s a pretty messed-up dungeon design.”
“Well, I guess it somewhat lines up with the dungeon’s gimmick.”
Everyone descended the spiral staircase leading to the next floor, with Lua Cheia bringing up the rear. They claimed they were only playing for fun, but Crim appeared pensive as she reflected on their experience so far. Frey and Freya, walking beside her, nodded in agreement.
“I still can’t believe it… I didn’t think it was possible to command so many players in a cohesive way.”
“Ah, yes, there was that too. It honestly made me aware of how much I still lack as a guild master…”
“Honestly… I don’t think there are more than a handful of people in all of Japan who could pull that off.”
Lycoris’ words made Crim and Frey recall the earlier battle. She was referring to the player who had taken the lead—Sorleon.
In Destiny Unchain Online, the usual party size was five members. Some dungeons allowed three parties to band together, forming an Alliance Raid. Full Alliance Raids combined two such groups for a total of thirty players, but such dungeons had yet to be released. The last battle, however, had been a Legion Raid, with triple the number of players—ninety in total.
Leading a Legion Raid and ensuring the players fought cohesively was no easy feat. It required a very experienced leader. Unlike in smaller raids, where one misplaced player could spell disaster, Legion Raids sometimes required players to act as sacrificial pawns to lure the boss into position. A leader had to identify who to select for that role and when.
When this dungeon was first introduced, many players believed no Japanese player could lead a Legion Raid flawlessly. Even Shao had seemed unsure of his ability to do so. Yet Sorleon had done it. He analyzed the battlefield with a calm precision, giving quick and concise orders almost like a machine.
Just who is that guy really? Crim wondered.
At this point, she wouldn’t be surprised to learn that Sorleon had experience leading actual armies. In fact, it would make perfect sense—that was the level of precision his leadership demonstrated.
“Hmm… Master, you can’t let that get to your head!”
“Oh… yes, you’re right.”
Hinagiku, who was a few steps ahead, had turned around and shouted to stop Crim from dwelling on what she lacked compared to Sorleon.
“That remindeth me, Hinagiku. Art thou still coming to visit the day after tomorrow, as we hath agreed?”
“Yes! I did all my homework just as I promised my mother, and I got passing marks on everything.”
“Good, good. I bet you also finished faster than all of your classmates, right?”
“Eheheh…”
Frey had taken on the role of tutoring Hinagiku with her homework, so he patted her head upon hearing that everything had gone well.
Crim had tried to help at first, but both Hinagiku and Frey shot her down, saying she was terrible at teaching. That had really bruised her ego, though she kept that to herself.
“Well… I’m sure we’ll be done with this dungeon before the fireworks festival too… and it seems we’ve arrived.”
They had finally reached the end of the long and seemingly endless spiral staircase. Crossing the small door that had been left open by the players ahead of them, they stepped into the next area.
And past it…
“Woahh…”
“Is this…a library?”
A vast room spread out before them, with towering bookshelves on both sides. The ceiling was so high it was impossible to see from the floor, but looking up revealed a multitude of bookshelves floating far above them. It was slightly surreal, but calling it a library felt more than appropriate.
This was the fifth floor—R’lyeh’s Great Magic Library.
The event dungeon’s final floor had opened its doors to these uninvited guests, revealing its collection of countless ominous and heretical books, manuscripts, and all sorts of wicked magic…
