Wyverns.
One of the weakest types of dragons in Destiny Unchain, with their front legs generally also working as wings.
Different from other dragons which preferred a solitary life, wyverns lived in packs, which collectively could become just as big of a threat as a proper bigger dragon.

As they specialized in flying, they were more nimble in the air as well.
Their bodies, covered in thick scales, could deflect arrows and bullets, and had considerable resistance to magic as well.
Their breath attack, while weaker to that of a dragon, was still powerful, having plenty of range and speed.
And the biggest threat was their high intelligence, allowing them to form strategies and attack as a group.

Overall they could be complex opponents, which was difficult to not notice as they swarmed over their prey.

Lua Cheia had been taken by surprise…but they were also a veteran guild that fought through countless battles together. Crim and Hinagiku went straight for the enemy frontline, defeating the two wyverns leading the attack.
…And then the issues arose.

“Crim, we can’t hold out for long like thiss!!”
“Ah, yes, got it..!”

Freya’s crying voice reached her almost immediately, as she held her shield up and deployed a light barrier while trying to fend off a rain of breath attacks.
But even as Crim shot down another wyvern with GUNgnir, it was not enough.
The only thing keeping her safe right now was Freya’s Skill Light Pulse Shield.
That barrier scaled in durability with the caster’s MP, and as Freya had an enormous pool of it, the breath attacks were completely nullified. The only issue was that each time it took damage it also consumed MP, so given enough time it would break.
Knowing that made Crim start to panic…but there was little they could do with the wyverns still flying high up above them. Only ranged attacks worked.

…And after the first encounter, the wyverns realized how dangerous Crim was, so they kept their distance from her and focused more on breath attacks.

They fully utilized their aerial advantage, showering the group with ranged attacks.
But a different group just watched attentively, waiting for the moment someone took a step outside of Freya’s barrier to swoop in and attack, making everyone feel overwhelmed.

“Ughh these lizards have no right to be this smart!”
“Grow a pair and come down to fight fair and square already!!”
“Having to play chicken is so annoyinggg!!”

That one sided situation began to annoy Kasumi, Setsuna, and Hinagiku, who began shouting back at them.
The only one who could fly amongst them was Lycoris, and she needed a lot of time to aim properly. Their only option was to use their limited ranged attacks against the rain of breath attacks…

*…Wait, maybe that could work?*

There was actually a second person capable of flying. Crim herself.
After taking down a couple of Wyverns, Crim ran out of bullets for GUNgnir, so she stashed the gun away in her Inventory and began thinking of what more to do.
Earlier when she fell with Freya she had instinctively used her wings to fly a bit, so she understood how to move them now, or she hoped so at least. It had been a fortunate accident.
She was far from proficient at it, but this was the perfect opportunity to practice more. Making that blitz decision, she spread her wings and moved them vigorously.

“Crim?”
“Take care of things around here, Frey. I’ll go up there to deal with them myself! I’ll appreciate any followup!”

Frey was already busy unleashing every attack magic spell he could when Crim said that…and then her small body took off into the sky at an incredible speed.

“…Ohh…this feels…quite nice actually!”

In a way, being able to fly freely was a dream for every person, and she was experiencing it now.
Each time her wings flapped, the terrain below rushed away from her, while all her senses were freed from the concept of gravity. It was so exhilarating that she let out a loud cheer.
But the wyverns would not ignore the person intruding in their airspace. One of them, deciding that their prey came to them, rushed at her with its jaws open wide, showing rows of sharp fangs.

“Hmph, foolish animal..!”

*FWOOM*

Her wings flapped violently, sending her body gliding around, while an enormous weapon of shadows materialized in her hands…a polearm with a blade so large it was half as long as Crim’s body.
She imbued that enormous weapon with her flying momentum, swinging it leaving a dark crimson trail as it cut through the wyvern’s neck…and instantly dealing a critical hit, marking Crim’s first aerial takedown as its lifeless body fell limp to the ground.
The other wyverns saw that and turned to her, changing course.
Her polearm emitted a red aura as she stopped, hovering in mid-air, and the wyverns circled around her, keeping their distance… Seeing those remaining targets, Crim grinned, her sharp fang peeking out.

“Now then… I have to thank thee for volunteering to be my flying target practice..!!”

Shouting that with delight, the girl who went from terrestrial prey into an aerial predator flapped her wings again and darted at her next target…
