“…Eugh.”

It was a sunny summer morning when a deeply pained groan echoed within a darkened room.

There was a comforting breeze, being so early in the morning, but all Kou felt as soon as she woke up was an uncomfortable sensation under the warming blanket she was wrapped in, and a piercing pain like her insides were being shredded apart, making her grimace moments after waking up.

The school’s opening ceremony is today too.

The clear sky was reason enough for Kou to dread standing out in the open for long, as she was weak to sunlight, but now something else had decided to make her day worse.

All she could do was to curse her own body for choosing such a bad moment, and force herself to get up and take care of things.

This was her second time going through that, so she was a bit better prepared this time. She was able to put all her bloodied clothes in the washing machine, clean everywhere she was soiled, and take necessary measures to stop that from happening again.

Then looked through the bathroom’s shelves for the necessary items and put them into her purse.

She also debated on taking some of the medicine her mother had given her, only to decide she could bear it without those pills right now, but just in case she put a packet of them in her purse as well, and then placed the purse in her school bag.

Luckily, if that term could even be used in such a situation, both her parents had stayed in the office the previous night, and she only needed to be at school during the morning, so there was no need for her to prepare any lunchboxes.

She also did not feel like preparing breakfast at all, so instead she just drank a glass of hot milk with complete nutritional powder, a rather dystopian breakfast, and got ready to head to school.

…This time, it was the height of summer, so the winter blazer would not be a good choice.

Instead, she applied a generous amount of anti-UV sunscreen so she could wear lighter clothing. She chose a thinner skirt than the one used in winter, paired it with the standard school blouse, and tied a ribbon neatly around her neck.

To top it all off, she wore a summer cardigan, and then she checked how she looked.

I’m really a highschool girl through and through…

Seeing her reflection reminded her that she was a cute girl now, though it was still hard to fully accept that the image in the mirror was truly her. Lost in thought as complex emotions swirled in her mind, she lost track of time, only snapping out of it when she realized she had to leave or she’d be late for the bell.

Once outside, she found Hijiri and Subaru waiting for her, as usual. They were also wearing their summer uniforms.

“Hey, good morning. I see you’ve chosen that outfit this time.”
“Yeah… I wouldn’t be able to hide it with winter clothes.”

Kou replied to Subaru while opening her parasol, forcing a smile.

The thing she would not be able to hide was obviously the cooling spell she used underneath her clothes. No matter how much shade she was under, it would be weird if she remained perfectly cool without sweating while wearing a blazer on top of all her clothes.

“Good morning Kou. You look good in summer clothes.”
“Ah…thanks.”

This was the first time Kou had given such a half-hearted reply to a compliment from Hijiri, instantly signaling that something was wrong and making her worry.

“…Say, did anything happen?”
“Ahahah…it came this morning.”

Kou replied while holding her lower stomach, and Hijiri let out a concerned whistle.

“Ah…That reminds me, Auntie Amari said that your period might be a bit irregular for a while.”

Amari had told them that Kou’s period had a slightly slower rhythm than that of most people, taking roughly a month and a half. The first one had occurred at the start of July, so her prediction had been correct.

“…Listen you two, could you please not talk about that stuff when I’m around? Also, we’ll miss the train if we don’t hurry.”
“Ah, sorry Subaru.”

Subaru had been covering his ears and looking away, trying his hardest to not listen to the conversation. Hearing his complaint, Hijiri apologized to him, holding her palms together, and then they began walking.

Kou followed right after them, thinking…

“…Somehow I have a feeling that there’s more bad things about to happen today…” Kou muttered in a defeated voice, thinking back to the hectic morning she already went through.

And sadly for Kou, she had a reputation amongst her friends for always being right when she felt that way, and soon she would be made painfully aware of how correct they were…
