The second semester of the first year has started.

After coming home from her vacation in Tokyo, Kana’s activity can basically be summed up like that of a young lady that never left the inner chamber of her home. Although she was forceful by nature, she was also a little masochistic, so after being locked in for 2 days, she turned to enjoy being bullied by Eru instead.

“No need to explain. Your sister’s controlling tendency has already entered the later stage. She still can be saved, don’t give up so easily,” a roasting message from Momokawa said.

“Don’t write as if you are better than me at this,” Kana fired back. She then changed subject, “What has come out from your investigation?”

Momokawa and Kana has tacit understanding not to argue further and keep their opinions to themselves after that comment. For Kana, it was because it was too humiliating for her to bear remembering. For Momokawa, it’s because she didn’t know what to say.

The-recently-released young lady’s phone vibrated, having received her email, “This is what I found, please see if it is useful or not.”

She immediately opened the attachment. The first thing that greeted her was a picture of a golden hand gun.

“Beretta M92L special edition1. Barrel length 217 millimeter, weight 1.06 kilogram, firing velocity is 375 m/s, effective range 50 meter, magazine capacity 15 rounds. Body primarily made of aluminum alloy and cemented carbide, it’s gold-plated, and is embedded with 8 small diamond, one sapphire, and one ruby. It should have been produced in 1992 by Beretta to be presented as a commemoration gift to Jili Fund. Only one of them has been produced until now…”

Kana hummed. Outside of the event of irregularity, this gun should also be the only one of its kind in the previous world, and therefore, it’s very likely that Jili Fund was her assassin.

But… Kana still didn’t know what grudges was there between her and Jili Fund, that they insisted of killing her themselves quickly. She might have been an investor, but she didn’t have much association with the fund. Jili Fund was a stable, safe investment vehicle, contrary to Kana’s style, which was high risk, high return. In other words, their domain of operation are very distinct2. Naturally, this means that they can’t meet eye to eye, but on the other hand, they didn’t seem to be the kind of fools that would be eager to kill someone.

“Onee-chan, Onee-chan.”

Kana wake up from her thought, Eru was jogging from the auditorium. Beside her, there’s Kirisaki, who was making a complicated expression.

“Nn?” Kana looked around, and found that she was the only student around still wearing short sleeves, “Is the principal missing a screw? It’s clear that the weather is still warm, yet have stipulated students to wear autumn uniform.”

“Onee-chan, you’re the one who didn’t see the notice. Are you looking for excuses?3

Eru rolled her eyes. The entrance ceremony was about to start, there’s no time left to go back home to change. Kana has a makeup exam today, so she didn’t need to leave the house together with her little sister. As a result of taking her eyes off, Kana has made a blunder. Eru didn’t know whether to blame her sister, or herself.

“How’s your makeup exam?” Although she knew that the exam wouldn’t give her much trouble, Eru still cared to ask.

“Not bad,” Kana answered, “Eru, shouldn’t you be preparing for your speech? Why are you still here?”

“I’m worried that Onee-chan couldn’t find her grade’s seats.”

“How would that even be possible? I’m not a moron.”

“Then, where do your group sits?”

“Eeerrr…”

Kana didn’t read the notice, she couldn’t have known where her seat was.

Eru couldn’t help but sigh, “Onee-chan, you’re still with Kirisaki-chan. You are classmates, I will go prepare for the speech.”

Eru said goodbye to Kana and conveniently pass her to Kirisaki, who readily agreed to help take care of her. After Eru left, Kirisaki looked at Kana from head to toes, and wear an even more complicated expression.

“Eeew… Why are you looking at me like I’m a piece of meat?” Kana said with disgust.

Kirisaki chuckled, “My, I wonder what you are thinking in that brain of yours?”

“Whatever you mean?”

“You know what I meant.4

While Kirisaki led Kana through the auditorium, she pulled out a folder from her bag and handed it over to Kana.

“This’s what you wanted,” Kirisaki said, “Guns, ammunition, bulletproof vests, and also three experienced hired guns.”

Chiba bank’s representative had tried to negotiate with Kana for a lower price. Kana agreed, and the final hush money was 3 billion yen. The bank has paid 1 billion yen, and the remaining 2 billion yen will be paid in installment over 20 year period. Kana could understand their reasoning. The bank was worried that I wouldn’t keep my word, so they wanted to pay over a period of time like this.

After receiving the first payment, the first order of business was looking for Kirisaki’s family help in finding some reliable bodyguards. It isn’t odd for rich people to have bodyguards in their residence, but Kana was paying 100 million yen in annual salary, and want bodyguards who would only listen to her order, and hers alone, even if they’re illegal.

From her point of view, if it would guarantee Eru’s safety, then 100 million a year is not much.

Kana flipped open the folder. The first few pages list the weapons. She bought five hand guns and two rifles. Because Kirisaki family bought it from the black market, the price of the real guns were unexpectedly cheaper than fake, airsoft guns for survival games. The merchant even throw in more than 1,000 rounds of bullets and some firearm bags.

Conscience merchant. 5-star rating5.

The later part of the folder contained information about the hired guns.

“Lagoon Company,” Kirisaki introduced, “Chief Dutch is a retired American navy officer. This beautiful woman that wields two guns is Revy, a Chinese-American. And finally, Benny. He is the team’s technician, computer expert and is also adept at networking. Do these three fulfill your requirements?”

“Are they dependable?”

“Lagoon Company is the most reputable mercenaries, there’s almost no recorded broken promise.”

“Then that’s good,” Kana nodded.

“You haven’t answered me yet. What are you planning to do?” Kirisaki inquired with interest.

“Nn…” Kana pondered a little, “The Chitanda family is going to develop the Kamigaito Mountain Range, so I want to form a rescue team.6

“Che, do you take me for a fool?”

“You are a fool, since I’m speaking the truth.”

“To hell with your truth!”

“No need to believe if you don’t. In any case, you are a fool.”

“……”

They both fought with each other while they are still looking for their seat. The students’ representative climbed on stage to give a speech, and the auditorium turned quiet immediately.

Kana gripped her phone tightly, since the second round, by coming to this world finally began.

Footnotes:

  1. Richie: I have searched and couldn’t find any M92L gun from Beretta, but it is written so in the source material.
  2. Richie: This means that they aren’t competitors, since 1) They fulfill completely different needs of a customer. 2) Their portfolio likely make up of completely different stocks and bonds too, so they shouldn’t be competing on buying the same things.
  3. Richie: I doubt there will be any consequences regardless. She is the daughter of Chitanda after all.
  4. Richie: I wonder how widely known is Kana’s homosexuality. At least Momokawa knew, but we only know that Momokawa knew.
  5. Richie: Here’s for good business.
  6. Richie: Uh huh.
