The students majoring in the Engineering department, as the Professor had mentioned, possessed an extraordinary interest in and curiosity about alchemy and magical engineering. Many were not only eager to acquire knowledge but also displayed an exceptional level of focus.
As a result, the first class assignment—to create an original magical device—came to a temporary end past the allotted class time.
“In tomorrow’s class, we’ll continue from where we left off. For those who completed their devices, please prepare a report detailing your observations and areas for improvement,” the Professor concluded, marking the end of the first session.
As for my Hiraishin, which I had completed through replicating the Professor’s experiment, he only inquired about its intended use. If I had perfected the replication and addressed all the issues with Five Petal Rings, perhaps he would have probed further. However, my interest hadn’t leaned in that direction.
Looking back, it was perhaps a blessing in disguise that I decided to make it as a gift for Hom.
Due to my carelessness, Hom had experienced the unfortunate event of an electric shock, leaving her unable to use lightning-element magic. The Hiraishin device I made as a form of atonement converted all aether channeled through it into lightning-element aether. With this, Hom should be able to use Blitzraid on her own.
Eager to show it to her, I hurried back to the dorm, only to find that Hom wasn’t in the room.
Hearing the sound of running water from the bathroom, I assumed she was bathing. The first day of the Military Department’s classes must have been quite rigorous.
“I’m back. How was your day, Hom?”
Announcing my return, I asked her about her day. Just then, Hom emerged from the bathroom, her hair covered with a towel, having just finished washing.
“We had a combat drill. It was like a smaller-scale version of the recent class competition,” she replied, carefully avoiding dripping water onto the floor as she changed into fresh clothes. Her pale skin was marked with several painful-looking red welts.
“Are you hurt—?”
“Just minor scrapes,” Hom interrupted with a slightly troubled smile, seemingly sensing my concern. She explained that they used training weapons, which, while non-lethal, still packed a painful punch when they struck.
“…Who did you team up with, Hom?”
“Lady Farah, Numelin, and Vannabelle formed a four-person team with me,” she replied.
When Hom mentioned their names, her expression softened just a little. It seemed likely that today’s combat drill had brought her closer to them.
“Judging by that look, I’d say you won.”
“Of course. If we couldn’t hold our own among our peers, we wouldn’t even be able to challenge the upperclassmen.”
Ah, Hom is truly remarkable. She’s already set her sights on a goal and is steadily moving toward it. Despite the constraints of status and grade level, she’s determined to overturn those barriers through her performance in practical drills.
“…Think you can keep up with it all?”
Undoubtedly, it’ll be a grueling path. But if it’s Hom, I felt sure she’d overcome it.
“Of course,” she replied confidently.
“That’s good to hear,” I said, relieved.
It seemed that Hom and I shared the same sentiment. Meeting each other’s gaze, we smiled. Then, I carefully dried Hom’s still-damp hair with a towel.
“How was your first class, Master?”
Hom bent down slightly to make it easier for me to towel her hair, her curious gaze fixed on me.
“It took a bit longer than expected, but I made this,” I said, holding out the small, palm-sized, key-shaped magical device—Hiraishin.
Hom blinked in wonder before gently taking it into her hands.
“What is this?”
“Hiraishin. I found an intriguing paper and decided to make this for you, Hom.”
“For me?”
“That’s right.”
I gently channeled aether into Hiraishin resting in Hom’s hands. The floral ornament, crafted from thinly sliced and processed lightning-attributed magic stone, reacted to my aether and shimmered with a golden light.
“This magical device converts all aether channeled into it to lightning-attributed aether. With this, you should be able to activate Blitzraid on your own.”
“Thank you very much. I will cherish this as a protective charm from Master and keep it with me at all times.”
She sent her own aether into the device, watching with delight as the magic stone petals gleamed brighter in response.
“I’m glad you like it. If you’re going to carry it around, let me attach a cord so you can wear it around your neck.”
The light in the petals intensified, growing more radiant with the aether Hom provided. The sight was breathtakingly beautiful.
“Also, while it should be effective in one-on-one combat, it doesn’t produce as much output as doing it with Alfe, so be careful of that.”
“Thank you for your consideration.”
It looked as though tears of joy were welling up in her eyes1. Seeing Hom so happy, I couldn’t help but feel my own vision blur with emotion.
Tears of happiness—just like Alfe. Perhaps Alfe always carried such warm feelings when she interacted with us.
