I picked up a paper where Albert Ampiere was listed as the primary author and quickly skimmed through the abstract. Each paper brimmed with ambition, challenge, and novelty, drawing my interest with their innovative approaches.

Among them, a paper on simplified formulas titled Five Petal Rings stood out for its originality. The study attempted to convert attribute-less aether into aether of the five attributes.

The diagram illustrating the foundation of the technique resembled a flower with five petals made of runes. Each petal contained a conversion formula corresponding to one of the five attributes: fire, water, earth, lightning, and wind. According to the Professor’s experimental results, the conversion of aether was only marginally successful, yielding an extremely weak output. This led to the conclusion that the technique was incomplete.

“…Maybe I should try replicating it.”

Replication here referred to repeating the Professor’s experiment exactly as described in the paper to verify the results. While I was partly motivated by a desire to confirm reproducibility, my own curiosity played a significant role. I wanted to see firsthand the phenomena that the professor might have been unable to fully describe in their paper.

Equipped with a blank formula foundation for the technique and magic ink, I carefully drew the simplified formula of Five Petal Rings. Upon channeling aether to activate it, a beautiful light in five colors illuminated the flower-like structure.

However, as the results indicated, the light was faint, as though it might flicker out at any moment.

The likely reason was that the process of dividing the aether into five attributes weakened each portion, resulting in feeble attribute aether.

As theorized by the Professor, the attribute conversion itself was successful. Yet with the output reduced to a fifth, its practical applications would be limited. Furthermore, my replication revealed that the technique’s complexity demanded a substantial amount of aether just to activate, making it inefficient.

I tried increasing the amount of aether flowing through the technique, and the faint light grew slightly stronger.

Even so, even if one were to use liquid aether to increase the supply, the inefficiency would render it practically unusable. However, if this issue could be resolved, the technique had the potential to become quite effective.

With a good idea in mind, I decided to use this replication as a foundation to create a simplified formula that would convert any attribute aether into “lightning aether” for output.

While the Professor had focused on simultaneous conversion into five attributes, narrowing the scope to a single attribute might reveal a path to simplifying the technique.

Since I was already at it, I thought I could enhance the simplified formula further by embedding an additional enchantment magic formula. If I could make it generate an electric current at a targeted location, it might serve as a useful gift for Hom.

Once the theory was solidified, the next step was to decide on its external design. As I searched through the components on my workbench, I found a piece with a formula foundation about the size of my palm, shaped somewhat like a key.

It seemed portable enough, and if I adorned it with an object resembling the Five Petal Rings, it would add a nice visual touch. Using lightning magic stones for the petals would make the conversion to lightning aether more efficient.

At the tip of the key-like part, I considered embedding a needle to focus the aether and prevent it from dispersing. Adding a mechanism to retract the needle into the main body when not in use would make it safer for Hom to carry around.

Once I began designing the magical device, ideas flowed one after another. Focusing on its primary purpose—converting aether to the lightning attribute—I completed the small magical device and named it Hiraishin.
