The ground had a rounded rectangular track, marked with white lines, consisting of two straight and two curved sections. It measured 400 meters per lap and was relatively large, with twelve lanes.

“Alright, since it’s the first session, we’ll take it easy. Run ten laps around the track.”

That added up to about four kilometers, which seemed manageable. However, considering the vast difference in physical abilities between me and the other students, I might want to explore the option of applying for an exemption in the future. I wondered what Romeo, another small-framed individual from the Halfling race, planned to do. Despite his appearance, he might have more stamina than I expected.

As I glanced toward Romeo, I found him looking back at me. His face was flushed red, and he quickly averted his gaze. Did he have a fever or something?

“Mr.Tanutanu, that’ll be over in a flash!” Vannabelle, from the Bunny race, seemed confident in her running ability.

“Well, don’t be in such a hurry,” Mr. Tanutanu said while gesturing toward the entrance of the field with his eyes. Just then, I saw Gide approaching, pulling a cart loaded high with backpacks.

“This has to be a joke…”
“It’s a mandatory subject, remember?”

Romeo tried to calm Isaac, who had collapsed dramatically on the spot, crying out in despair.

“Nya ha! Well, well,” Farah, who had snuck up nearby, chuckled, her tail swaying playfully.
“To prepare you for future military training, you’ll be carrying these backpacks. Add weight according to your ability, and the extra weight will be factored into your grades1.”
“Oh, sounds good! Let’s do it, Nume!”
“Okay~”

Undeterred by the announcement of extra weight, Vannabelle and Numelin eagerly took their backpacks from Gide. Each backpack weighed about 20 kilograms, and Vannabelle casually took three, while Numelin effortlessly carried five.

“I shall contribute to the bonus points as well.” Hom took on six backpacks and bounced lightly, testing her body’s condition.

“Hom, you’re amazing. I think one is my limit.”
“I don’t think I can even carry one.”

The load, nearly as heavy as my own body weight, seemed impossible for me to lift. Romeo appeared to be in the same predicament, standing by the cart with a troubled expression.

“Oh, I almost forgot… Leafa, Romeo. You two will take these smaller ones. They still weigh 10 kilograms, though.”
“Thank you.”

Romeo looked relieved as he took the backpack and handed mine over as well.

“I’m sorry about yesterday. Thank you for going out of your way to cover for me.”
“Oh, uh, it’s fine…”

I tried to express my gratitude for his help the previous day, but Romeo quickly looked away and ran off. It seemed that 10 kilograms was a manageable weight for his small frame.

““Pale-skinned elf, Lili-Lulu, will carry two each.””
“I guess two for me too.”

Lili-Lulu and Farah each picked up two backpacks, slinging them over their shoulders. The other classmates mostly took two or three backpacks each.

“I’ll carry the rest.”

Gide grabbed the remaining eight backpacks, four in each hand, and lumbered off with ease.

“Wow! My class is outstanding this year!” Mr. Tanutanu crossed his arms, looking at the now empty cart, and laughed heartily.

Thus, we set off to run ten laps around the field, carrying or holding our backpacks. However…

“… I am at my limit… truly so…”
“Why is it that you always give up before me? I’m at my limit too!”
“……”

For some reason, I found myself trailing at the very back alongside Romeo and Isaac, staggering as we ran. Even with the reduced load, if they didn’t adjust the exercise itself, the exertion was overwhelming. At this rate, even though I’d recover thanks to my Aether Overproduction Syndrome, mentally, I wasn’t sure how much longer I could hold on.
