The first day ended with just the entrance ceremony and homeroom, but from the next day onward, classes officially began.

The schedule consisted of military training and magic studies in the morning, followed by three periods of general education lectures in the afternoon.

Military training was led by our homeroom teacher, Mr. Tanutanu. We were told to change into the issued gym uniforms and gather on the field.

I had been worried about whether there would be a size that fit me, but it seemed they had gym clothes for the Halfling race as well. Both Hom and I found that our uniforms fit perfectly.

“Master.”
“Hm?”

As we stepped out onto the field, I noticed a gaze on me. It seemed to be Romeo watching us. Hom immediately grew wary, but it wasn’t something to be concerned about.

“He’s probably just curious about me. I never explained my situation, only said I had my reasons.”

Romeo was a member of the Halfling race, but even though I was human, I was smaller than he was. Romeo had likely endured his own struggles because of his size, and perhaps he was concerned about me.

“Are you sure you don’t want to tell them about your illness?”
“Even if I mentioned it, they wouldn’t understand since it’s such a rare condition. Besides, I don’t want anyone worrying about me unnecessarily because I’m sick1,” I shrugged as I answered, and Alfe seemed to accept my reasoning with a nod.

“…That’s true.”

While doing so, Alfe suddenly wrapped her arms around me in a tight hug.

“When I first heard that you were sick, I was so scared that you might disappear,” she said softly.

Ah, so that’s what brought this on. She must have remembered that time. Even now, thinking about the pained look on her face back then makes my chest ache.

“I’m sorry for worrying you back then, Alfe.”
“No, not at all. I’ve never once thought of it as a burden when it comes to you, Leafa.”

As soon as I apologized, Alfe shook her head vigorously. Her swaying hair brushed against my cheek, tickling me slightly.

“Everything I feel and think about is because I love you, Leafa. That’s all.”
“I see.”

I gently pulled back from her embrace and looked up at her face. To think, the tiny baby from back then had grown so much.

“Mhm.”

Alfe, unaware that I still retained all my memories, smiled happily as she took my hand, intertwining our fingers and then letting go, repeating the motion. She had always loved to confirm my presence like this, ensuring I was here with her, holding her hand. Some things never changed.

“…Haha! Look at that! When a shorty like you holds hands like that, it’s like a baby holding its mommy’s hand!”

A teasing laugh rang out from behind us, pulling me from the moment.

“……”

Sigh, Vanabelle again. It was clear she didn’t like me, but it was tiresome how she kept picking fights for no reason.

“That’s not true! Leafa’s the one who’s the mommy here!” Alfe shot back, defending me.
“Master is mentally mature. Such remarks are uncalled for,” Hom added with her usual composure.

While I stayed silent, both Alfe and Hom quickly stepped in to counter Vanabelle’s teasing.

“Is that what a ‘mommy’ looks like? You’re tiny, not just in height—you’re tiny in every way!” Vanabelle jeered, puffing out her chest dramatically as she swaggered away. She was clearly mocking my figure—or rather, the lack of it. But it wasn’t like I had any control over the fact that my body had stopped growing.

“…Does having a larger chest signify some kind of superiority?” Hom asked, her tone genuinely puzzled.

“Who knows? I’m not interested in that sort of thing,” I replied.

Whether it mattered or not didn’t affect me in the slightest.

“I love every version of you, Leafa, no matter what!”
“Thank you, Alfe.”

Even though I never thought it bothered me, hearing her say that and hug me somehow always made my heart feel lighter.

Footnotes:

  1. Robinxen: Are you actually technically sick though…? Yes you have a condition, but I am not sure that “immortality” is a sickness.
  2. Robinxen: Okay so I always kind of assumed that Alfe was still kind of small and only a bit taller now but no… The teasing makes a lot more sense now.
