Blankly staring at the three items on the table, Mo Li quickly recovered from his shock.
Surveying the immense black tower, Mo Li noticed that only these three items retained their true colors. Everything else, including the illumination cast by the chandelier above, appeared monochromatic. It was as if these objects were the only tangible elements in an otherwise illusory environment.
This gave Mo Li a bizarre feeling as if he was in a different world governed by different dimensional rules, as everything here was intangible to him.
Then, since only these three things have color does that mean only these three things can be touched?
“So, you’re implying that I must select one among these three items?” Amidst the enigma, Mo Li grasped the implied message, and though he was merely conjecturing, he spoke with a tone of certainty while caressing the ring in his hands.
Perhaps it was his intuition guiding him, or maybe an echoing voice within his mind guiding him.
Mo Li tried touching the scroll which rested in the middle.
Suddenly an ancient and profound text emerged within his mind.
‘Teleportation scroll, effect: Dominion over space has always been the specialty of the fox fairies1 of the Alreiweija Clan, sealed within the scroll, and written in the blood of the fox clan is the blood art【Teleportation】, it can instantly teleport any lifeform within three meters of it to a safe area of over a hundred miles away, immediate activation after opening, number of use, one.’
Ah, blood of the fox fairies??
Mo Li was taken aback; whether the description was genuine or not, it was undeniably formidable.
If genuine, then the scroll’s creator must be quite ruthless being able to collect the blood of the fox clan.
Dragons, Foxes, and Vampires, these three mythical races each have their exclusive abilities, all of them heaven-defying.
The inherent mastery over space has long been the exclusive domain of the Alreiweija lineage, an inheritance passed down by the fox ancestor to her progeny. When mastered to the extremes, the wielder is said to have the ability of crafting a bespoke dimension aligned with their desires.
Throughout history, numerous individuals have coveted this formidable ability, covetously eyeing the Alreiweija bloodline. Yet, among these aspirants, none have left a trace in historical annals. Speculation among historians suggests that they likely met their demise after being thrown into some obscure dimensional maelstrom2 by the fox clan…
After all, foxes hold unity in high regard, readily avenging any member of their kin, even if they are unfamiliar with the individual or face significant personal sacrifice in doing so.
Hence, whether the scroll was pilfered from a fox or fashioned from the blood of one, its creator must have been quite cutthroat.
Considering the fox clan’s monopoly over spatial arts, any object containing such abilities or even remotely associated with said abilities hold immense value. If this broken little ring wasn’t deceiving Mo Li, then the true worth of this scroll would be substantial enough to purchase multiple manors and estates.
Often times having a teleport scroll is akin to having a second life, for nobles who greatly value their lives something like it could be directly passed down as a family heirloom.
Thinking of these things Mo Li was quite tempted.
The scroll lay before him, and despite his uncertainty about its authenticity, Mo Li wanted to take a chance. What if it was genuine? Selling a scroll with a teleportation spell could potentially alleviate his worries about food and drink for several months.
Despite the promising prospect, Mo Li remained composed and focused on a critical issue: to whom would he sell this scroll?
If he wanted to sell it for a high price then the buyer would naturally have to be a noble, however expecting those filthy, rapacious nobles to keep a secret was definitely impossible, there’s even considerable risk of the noble detaining him and interrogating him on the origins of said scroll.
Moreover, if a member of the fox clan were to see this scroll, even with hundreds of mouths Mo wouldn’t be able to explain clearly. The memories of being suspended and beaten in a different dimension remain vivid in his mind, and Mo Li had no desire to go on another 1-day trip to a different dimension.
As for the lifesaving function that this scroll provided, at present Mo Li had no uses for it, at this stage, there were no imminent threats to his life, and as such if he really had to choose, a one-time use teleport scroll could only be passed3 on.
Then there’s the cane.
Mo Li repeated his previous motion extending his hand towards the pitch-black cane displayed on the table.
‘Cane of The Devourer: Once a day, negate any blood art.’
Hm, it’s clear and concise, but I also don’t know how genuine its effects are.
Blood arts, as implied by its name, is a type of innate ability derived from one’s bloodline, and exclusive to nobles. It also serves as the primary source of capital for those sanctimonious individuals.
The reason commoners are unable to overthrow nobles lies in the absence of a bloodline. Unlike commoners, nobles who have a bloodline can rely on it to display power beyond the norm, at least in this world stories of one person beating entire armies exist.
The tiers of bloodlines are classified as such: none, black iron, bronze, silver, gold, and legend.
For instance, Princess Emilia of the Papal States possesses a gold-tier bloodline known as the Divine Phoenix bloodline4, while a significant number of nobles possess bloodlines categorized as either black iron or bronze.
As for Mo Li, he is merely a commoner without even a black-iron-tier bloodline to his name.5
In short, the ability to negate a blood art is quite heaven-defying, but the problem is that Mo Li currently has no enemies who possess a bloodline.
Mo Li’s current enemies, the Munster family, are descendants of a black-iron bloodline. However, due to generations of intermarriage, the bloodline has been entirely diluted. Consequently, without their insignificant black-iron bloodline, apart from their extensive real estate holdings, they are indistinguishable from commoners.
Hence, Mo Li had no reason to entertain thoughts of facing the bombardment of blood arts. Even if he were to antagonize a noble endowed with a bloodline, what benefit would nullifying a single blood art provide? He’s still just going to die.
As for his dragon form, what’s it gonna do for him? Not mentioning how a juvenile dragon appearing in front of the masses would only lead to a quicker death, after death her body would be desecrated as loot…
Only now did Mo Li realize how important power was to him, currently one little thing going wrong could cost him his life.
Seriously speaking though, this cane is still much easier to use than the teleportation scroll, but if it really doesn’t work out then it has to be you right.
The last item of choice is a pair of quaint unassuming, black-rimmed glasses.
So what’s so magical about these glasses? Mo Li couldn’t help but have these suspicions in his mind.
Looking at the name:【Alchemist Witch】Mirabelle’s Alchemy Glasses.
My word, this name is the longest out of these three items so what are its effects?
Mo Li continued reading downwards.
‘Glasses of the once every thousand-year Alchemic genius Mirabelle, it’s said that everyone who wears them is blessed with great longevity~’
“???” After reading and making sure that there was no further description three question marks appeared above Mo Li’s head.
The hell? What’s that supposed to mean, what are your effects, what exactly do you affect? You can’t be trying to say that if I wear these I’ll be eternally young right? That’s a little too outrageous! Also who’s Mirabelle, does such a genius alchemist actually exist I’ve never even heard of her before.
Forget it, out of these three items only the cane is the most reliable. I’ll just quit wasting my time and take it.
However, as Mo Li stretched his hand out toward the cane he still hesitated.
Noticing a key point in the naming of the pair of glasses: Alchemist.
As an assassin, he’ll inevitably have to work with poisons, and poisons all come from the hands of alchemists…
Could it be that if I wear this thing it’ll bless me with the talent of an alchemist, or does it provide some other buffs during alchemy?
Being able to concoct his own poisons would obviously be the best-case scenario, but Mo Li knew that he didn’t have the talent…
After pondering for a moment Mo Li retracted his hand from the cane and instead picked up the pair of black-rimmed glasses.
Footnotes:
- The fairy used when in reference to the fox clan will always be for beauty unless stated otherwise.
- Sounds like a great way to go lol.
- I’m assuming the author is saying pass because unless it’s some internet slang I don’t know of I can only imagine the author is using chinese characters to make the sound of pass in english.
- When I first translated Emilia’s bloodline I’m pretty sure I translated it as the golden divine phoenix bloodline or something like that, small correction from that time because at that time I hadn’t figured out if I wanted to translate the tier of bloodline separately from the actual bloodline name or not.
- Sure buddy says the recently turned Princess of the Qianbaiyu…. Sure.
