Registering with the adventurer guild was easy. The clerk woman was nice and issued me and Elenore adventurer cards. These can double act as our ID. The thing I was displeased with was that they were black. As expected, adventurers are ranked. As you complete more quests your fame will increase and eventually you can promote to another color.
This system wasn’t in the game. So it’s something unique to this world. The colors are: black, blue, red, silver, gold and platinum. Black is the lowest rank. And that kinda ticked me off. Not because that people would believe I’m weak. I couldn’t care less of others’ opinions. But because it limited the quest pool.
Quests for black card adventurers were limited to herb gathering, finding missing pets, fixing roofs etc. Barely any monster clashes. Even the hardest quest displayed on this guilds board I can probably do it with my eyes closed. But the clerk girl rejected me. She wouldn’t allow me to do them.
“Izuna, please… we need money. Look, any of these quests will do. Why don’t you pick one and…”
“Not happening!”
Elenore was desperately trying to make me take a quest. But I just can’t get myself motivated. We need money. I get it. But I simply refuse to do something so childish.
My prayers were heard in the end. While everyone was minding their own business, a female knight burst inside the guild hall. I recognized her. It was the same knight that guided me to Elenore’s farm. Why does she look so panicked? She quickly rushed to the counter and shouted:
“Everyone, listen up! We need the help of every adventurer available! An Astral Storm has appeared near our town!”
I almost fell off my chair when I heard those words. Astral Storm. It’s the phenomenon that brings monsters that attack and destroy everything in their path. Kuku.
I get off my chair and approach the female knight.
“You are…”
“Tell me, is there a reward for this?”
“Reward? For evacuation!? What are you saying? It should be your duty to…”
“Not that! A reward for defeating the wave.”
She tilted her head as if she didn’t understand my question.
“Are we receiving some backup from somewhere? If this town can be saved then there will definitely be a reward. But I didn’t see any troops coming to our aid. Do you…”
“Aight. That’s what I wanted to know.”
“Hey! Don’t turn your back on me!”
“I’ll just say this. Evacuation won’t be needed. I’ll handle the wave.”
A vein popped up on her head.
“Why you… do you perhaps have an army under that skirt?”
“I don’t need an army. I alone am more than enough.”
Elenore stepped in and calmed down the female knight. They didn’t listen to a word I said. Flipped tables, panic… everyone hurried to leave the city.
Me, on the other hand, I was headed towards the south-west gate. That’s were the attack was supposed to come from. Elenore firmly planted her feet on the ground and pulled my tail in an attempt to stop me. But I ended up dragging her regardless. My tail is just an accessory, you know. Even if you pull on it I won’t feel a thing.
Archers were placed on the narrow city walls. It felt really cramped. As expected of a small town the walls were too small. The soldiers thought of their hometown, encouraged themselves and shed tears for their upcoming deaths. They had to try and buy as much time as possible for the civilians.
If I leave things as they are now, this place will definitely be annihilated. Elenore was trembling next to me.
“Izuna… have you met an astral monster before?”
“Naturally.”
I’ve seen them many times in the game after all.
“Are they strong?”
“One on one I won’t even break a sweat. So maybe an army might be a challenge for me.”
“You two… really should hurry and evacuate.”
The female knight tried asking us to leave.
“You don’t look nervous.”
“You’re right. You can say I don’t look nervous. But if today is going to be the last day of my life… I want to live it doing what I believe is right. We will buy as much time as possible for everyone. Even if the town will fall, as long as the people will be safe, that’s all that matters.”
So, they were preparing to fight with those kind of feelings.
“The monsters! They are coming!”
One of the guards on the wall shouted. And with that I manifested my Chaoscaliber.
“Don’t worry. Today won’t be your last day. Nobody is going to die. Because… I will kill them all!”
Before the female knight or Elenore got the chance to say anything I put strength into my legs and leaped over the wall to the other side. I could see the astral monsters clearly. You would think that such hideous creatures would be under the command of the Demon King. Well not in this game… err… I mean world. Mazoku have humanoid appearance.
And these guys, some had the head of an ox, some had hooves instead of hands, some had blue skin and some were really huge. I can’t point out the raid boss yet. I scanned them. It was an army of around one hundred and something. And they were all pretty much in the level 30 range. Level 30 monsters tend to be stronger than a level 30 player. Still, it’s still too low to be a threat for me.
However, their numbers might be troublesome. And this place is an open field. I got no trees or rocks to maneuver around. The monster army stopped when they finally saw me.
“Goouuuhhh!”
They let out terrible roars and battle cries. Skeletons and chimeras were stomping the ground. I guess they must feel offended for only one person to stand before them. Then let’s get them even more angry.
“Hear me, you fools! Who gave you permission to march your army towards a town in which I reside? If this was some sort of mistake, blame your ignorance for getting in my way!”
The astral monsters felt confused. Probably nobody used a line like that against them. One of the astral demons stepped forward. It was a giant around 5 meters tall with the head of a wild boar.
“Who… you?”
They spoke? This is new. In the game the monsters of the waves weren’t capable of speaking, neither did they have a scenario where the player would interact with them. Let’s see what happens next.
“I am Izunahime! Engrave the name in your hearts! For I am the strongest!”
“You… look weak…”
Was he not taking me serious because I was female? Boar face raised his giant club at me. But before he managed to swing it… his body was split in two. He collapsed on the ground in a puddle of blood. A clean cut from my spear. So even a level 30 monster dies in one hit. I guess I can do this… if I get a little serious.
“I gave you a chance to retreat. But now… I will annihilate you all! Receive my judgement!”
