Chapter 12 – First Impressions

David was in the middle of an exam. He had absolutely no time to revise for it at all, having spent Saturday eliminating the undead at the tomb and Sunday resting. The exam was really the last thing on his mind.

He looked around the room, his classmates were all concentrated on the exam, he was the only one that was looking around. He looked at the paper. Mathematics, he was truly thankful that he had looked over the chapter by himself before, and was already relatively proficient in it before the teacher had taught it.

He opened the test paper and started to do it.

After about 45 minutes, he looked up again. People were still focusing on their exam. He was the only one that seemed to have finished. Although there were a few problems here and there, he managed to do most of the questions. Doing a rough calculation, he estimated that he would barely scrap an A for the exam. Not too terrible, and since it wasn’t the real thing, he had plenty of time of improve. The teacher might get annoyed at him for achieving such a ‘low’ grade, but it doesn’t matter.

He noticed Helaine waving at him and returned the greeting with a smile. Seeing that, she turned back to her exam paper. His life hadn’t changed all that much after becoming the host of Lucifer. Sure his schedule each day changed, and his priorities have changed a bit, but the rest were still the same. There wasn’t any drastic changes that took him away from his normal life.

He thought about the ‘exorcists’ that Lucifer had mentioned being there on Saturday. As they were returning, Lucifer talked a bit about the structure of the church and where the exorcists fitted in.

The Christians that were involved in the supernatural were plentiful. The church had the Pope at the very top, followed by Cardinals, Archbishops, Bishops, and Priests. Exorcists are usually Bishops, Priests, or even less than that. From his knowledge, there seemed to be various groups of exorcists just within the Roman Catholic Church. Unsurprisingly, other sects of Christianity also had their own groups of exorcists. Furthermore, exorcists did not even have to be religious in the first place. That was just a stereotype often used nowadays.

Despite that, the ones he had sensed that day seemed to be religious. From which sect he was unsure, but they were most likely Christians. If David wasn’t the host of Lucifer, he doubt anything major would have happened, but being the host of a demon, it wasn’t surprising for him to be targeted.

In the first place, Lucifer had not expected him to run into exorcists there. It was purely coincidental.

“David, the exorcists from before, I can sense them nearby,” Lucifer suddenly said out of nowhere.

“Wait.. What? Are you certain?” David muttered under his breath, he didn’t want to seem crazy and out of place. It was already easy to notice him seemingly talking to himself since the entire classroom was in exam conditions.

“Yeah, I’m positive. They’re close, but they don’t seem to be specifically targeting here. While not using <Possession> you don’t radiate or even leave a demonic aura, so you should be fine here.”

“I see…”

“And times up. Students, please remain seated and quiet while I collect in your exam papers. After I’ve collected them in, you are free to go,” The teacher said.

David looked at the clock. It seems like the exam and subsequently school was now over. He packed up his stuff and walked towards the common room.

“Dae~ How did you do just now?” came a voice beside him as he walked out of the classroom. Helaine had waited for him, probably to leave together.

“I think I did okay. Scrapped an A, but anything more than that is impossible.”

“Ehh, that’s really good already. I think I only got like half of the questions right. I actually had to skip some! “

“You couldn’t have done that bad, and its not like your grades are terrible anyways right? So don’t fret over it.”

“You’re right. Wait for me just a little. I’m going to grab my bag, then let’s go,” Helaine said, before sprinting off to grab her bag from the common room.

Around ten minutes later, they were walking out of the school gate.

“Dae, what do you plan to do in the future?”

“I don’t really know right now. A businessman? To be honest, as long as I can earn lots of money and live comfortably, I’m fine with anything. What about you?”

“Is that so? I want to become a celebrity. Maybe a singer or a dancer?”

“That’ll suit you, you are good at dancing after all,” David said. It was then that he saw three people walking towards them;. Those three people were deep in conversation, and were all wearing crosses somewhere on their body.

“They’re exorcists, probably the same as the ones on Saturday,” Lucifer suddenly said.

Upon hearing this, David took a closer look at them. They were two young women and a young man. The young man looked Japanese and was slightly shorter than him. The young man had a dignified expression. His hair spiked up and coupled with his dark brown eyes and solemn expression, he gave off a cool atmosphere. He wore a white shirt that left the top 3 buttons unbuttoned, revealing the simple cross around his neck, and black jeans. On top of the shirt was a white trench coat embroidered with gold. He was someone who could definitely cause a few heads to turn.

Both of the women were beauties. One of them looked Japanese as well. She was around 160 cm in height, not yet reaching David’s shoulders. Deep brown eyes and clear feature. Her hair was tied in a ponytail, giving her somewhat of a stereotypical look of a Yamato Nadeshiko. She wore a cream coloured cropped sweater alongside with black skirt and knee length socks. She looked rather cute.

The other young woman was a different kind of beauty. She possessed a more mature charm, similar to that of Helaine’s. With long wavy blonde hair and clear emerald eyes, she looked European. Her body was a stark contrast to the other woman’s. While the other woman had a childish charm, this woman had a mature body. Her long fitting dress certainly reflected this, showing off her long legs and small waist. She was wearing two earrings in the shape of a cross.

After burning their image into his head, David turned away. As he was doing this, his gaze met the second woman’s. He nodded his head in greetings, and she nodded back.

When the couple walked past them, Lux revealed a perplexed expression on her face.

“Lux onee-sama, what’s wrong?” asked Hikari. She was quite sensitive to the feelings of people in the team, having know both of them for a long time.

“The guy looked at us for a while. It’s strangely disturbing,” replied Lux. All of the warnings in her body was screaming out at her, but she couldn’t place her finger on the reason.

“Well, he was just entranced by your beauty right?” Hikari half-jokingly asked.

“The girl beside him doesn’t lose out to Lux-sama though…” Guang half-jokingly muttered.

“It wasn’t that sort of look. It was more like… It felt like he was observing us. His gaze seemed to penetrate into the body, as if he was trying to pry out our secrets. It’s like the gaze of a warrior on the battlefield,” Lux replied.

“EHHHH! Did Lux onee-sama start to get interested in someone? That guy was kinda cute, is Lux onee-sama interested in that kind of guy!” Hikari exclaimed loudly. “Ouch!”

The reason for the shout of because Lux hit her on the head, “It’s not that. And you’re too loud. It’s probably nothing, so let’s move on.”

David turned his head back to look at the people that walked past.

“They sure look friendly huh?” commented Lucifer.

“Yeah, isn’t that nice. I hope there’s no need get into a quarrel with them,” replied David.

“Dae, did you say something?” asked Helaine as she suddenly wrapped her arms around him.

“Ahh, no its nothing.”

“You were totally looking at that European. She’s your type. Here here, it’s okay. You can tell me everything,” Helaine whispered in his ear on tip toes.

David lightly pushed Helaine away, “It’s not like that. It’s just rather uncommon for there to be foreigners here.”

“I’m a foreigner though.”

“I meant foreign tourists. They aren’t students at our school and there isn’t much tourist spots here.”

“I suppose, anyways Dae let’s go quickly. Don’t you have to go training today?” asked Helaine as she grabbed David’s hand and ran forwards.

David looked back one last time, but he couldn’t see the exorcists anymore. Somehow, he had a strange feeling that they would meet in the near future…

[Vol 5] Prologue: The Training Begins

Sylvia “Zzz… Zzz…”

Back at Tristanian Academy, it was already late at night and everyone was sleeping soundly in their own room.

However, in a certain private room of the Angelwing dorm, someone was still wide awake. “Kuh—! I can’t sleep! I can’t fall asleep! I mean… how the heck can I fall asleep in such a situation?!”

That was my inner thought as I looked to the left, and there it was, the root cause that kept me wide awake; Sheena was sleeping beside me while clinging to my left arm. The soft texture of her breasts rubbed against my arm, her face was really close to mine, and I could feel her breathe against my cheeks.

I immediately flipped my head to the opposite side and screamed in my mind, “KHHHH!!! There’s no way I can fall asleep like this! It’s too arousing! This is too much for a 25-year old virgin like me!”

If I say I don’t enjoy the current situation, that’d be a big fat lie. In fact, this situation is to die for! Just that… I am currently extremely exhausted and is in dire need of a good-night sleep, so I can’t bring myself to enjoy the current situation to the fullest. After all that had happened throughout the day, it was only natural that I would be exhausted by now, it would be strange if I’m not.

Just when I was in the middle of lamenting this bittersweet feeling, Sylvidia suddenly whispered to me, “Psst~ Psst~ Master… since you can’t fall asleep, why don’t you try meditating? I mean… this is a great chance and all. Plus, you’d feel totally refreshed after a good period of meditation.”

“Meditation? How do I do that?” When I heard the term, meditation, I asked interestingly.

“Easy!” When Sylvidia heard me, she gave an immediate answer, “Just clear your mind of any worldly desires and focus on your breathing. Focus on how the air flows in and out of your body. That’s all. Oh, and you may also do it in any position you find comfortable. You don’t necessarily need to sit cross-legged, those are just misconception.”

When I heard that, I could only let out a bitter smile, to clear my mind of worldly desires? Easier said than done! There’s currently two heavenly mountains pressing against my arm, there’s no way I can clear my mind of this so-called worldly desires !

Perhaps Sylvidia have already guessed what I was thinking or that she could really read my mind, she said, “That’s why it’s more effective, if you can clear you mind under this kind of circumstances, you’d be able to master meditation in no time!”

“Mu…” What Sylvidia said was very reasonable, I couldn’t find any words to refute so all I could do was puff my cheeks in discontent.

I tried to clear my mind and focus on the air flowing in and out of my lungs as Sylvidia suggested, but every time Sheena moved a little, those pudding of hers would rub against my arm and cause my mind to go all over the place. It stayed this way until midnight. Instead of feeling more refreshed, I was feeling more exhausted than ever. In normal cases, it’d be easier to get into meditation mode the more exhausted you are, but that distraction was too powerful after all. No sane man could stay calm in the face of two heavenly mountains pressing against their arm.

“Sigh… looks like this won’t work…” Seeing that I didn’t make any progress for the past few hours, Sylvidia let out a sigh. “How about this instead? Since you can’t seem to clear your mind of worldly desires, how about we start with the second stage of meditation?”

“Huh? I didn’t even pass the first stage, how can I skip to the second stage just like this?” When I asked like this, Sylvidia answered with, “There are some people who can’t do the first stage of meditation, but is able to do the second stage with ease. Although the first stage is still very important. I will go more into details about that at a later time, but for now, I will explain about the second stage.”

Sylvidia stopped for a while to gather her thoughts before she continued, “In layman’s term, the second stage is basically what you did at the guild hall yesterday.”

“Wait… You don’t mean—?!” When I heard that, I almost couldn’t contain my excitement anymore and almost let out a shriek in joy.

“Ufufu… That’s right, the second stage of meditation is to analyze, break down, and recompose the elemental laws.” Sylvidia couldn’t help but let out a laugh when she saw my excitement. I mean… how could I not be excited? I’ve been looking forward to this the most.

I listened attentively as Sylvidia continued her explanation, “Although the second stage of meditation is less effective in drawing the elemental essence, it can help you comprehend the essence of elemental magic in the truest sense and increase your proficiency in  the so-called Origin Magic!”

They say that the Origin Magic is the original source of all magic, but that is too ambiguous so I have no idea what they were talking about. However, if I am to use my own interpretation of Origin Magic, I guess it would be tantamount to how the elemental laws work in Coiling Dragon ⌈1⌋. In other words, we can use magic by simply gathering the elemental essence with our Spiritual Power and materialize them into any forms imaginable of our own liking.

Once again, Sylvidia continued the explanation so naturally as if she could read my mind, “That’s right… As you may have already figured out, the most important part of the second stage of meditation is the power of imagination! In other words… just let your imagination run wild!”

As Sylvidia said that, I immediately recalled those weird skills I used previously;

By now, I’m pretty sure the runes on my hands could help me manifest the Spatial Dimension and Law of Velocity from the elemental laws of the wind. In other words, although I can use powerful and bizarre ability thanks to the runes, if something unexpected were to happen and my contract with Sheena was annulled for whatever reason, I wouldn’t be able to use those powerful attacks again.

That is, unless I didn’t start to analyze them now and make these moves my very own…

As I was lost in my own thought, Sylvidia was surprised at how easily I achieved the state of selflessness and indulged in that state so naturally. I had all but forgotten the two melons that were pressing against my arm and everything in my surroundings.

Sylvidia smiled wryly as she thought to herself, “I never understood why the gods were so interested in the otherworlder, but now I guess I finally have caught a glimpse of it… Does all otherworlder have this much imagination or is she just unique?”

……

“She will become strong… definitely…” As soon as Sylvidia thought of that, she could hear snoring sound coming from me. After losing myself in my imagination for not more than an hour, I fell fast asleep.

Sylvidia had a sweat drop on her forehead as she looked at me, who was soundly asleep. Then she immediately changed her evaluation, “I take that back, she still have a really long way to go…”

Author’s Note:

And so… the training arc begins…

By the way, just saying… since Arifureta has remained inactive for 2 months already, I’ve decided to take turns between writing and translating Arifureta during the weekdays, whenever I can. So with that… we might be seeing less chapters (or not) on Silva’s Diary.

I will try to release one chapter every 2 weeks, but no promises on that, that depends on if I can come up with something to write or not.

Chapter 80
Repayment

Bang Bang

“Thank you! Thank you!” The man kowtowed twice on the floor before looking up at Chu Shen. His eyes metal lenses focused on Chu Shen with a whir.

Chu Shen awkwardly nodded in acknowledgment before pulling the man to his feet. “It’s nothing really. This is a business transaction after all, nothing to be grateful over since we are taking your money for this.”

The man shook his head. “It doesn’t matter if you are doing this for the money. The simple fact that you can give me back my sight is a tremendous favor. If you ever need something ask the Agata family to find me.”

“I will do so if I need to. Don’t take this the wrong way but I hope to never see you again in my shop.” Chu Shen said as he escorted the man to the door.

For a second the man was stunned before realizing the meaning in his words. Smiling back at him with a wide grin he laughed loudly. “Of course, of course my friend. I too wish to never see the Prosthetic Shop again unless it is for tea. Take care young one.”

Chu Shen watched the man leave before letting out a sigh and sliding down the wall to the floor. Grinning wryly he envied Lucas who was enjoying his time hunting beasts in the forest. Ever since they started up the business last week they had a booming business.

It seemed as though they weren’t told everything when it was suggested they make a prosthetic shop. Apparently the bladed apes that attacked the poor Lang Xi was not uncommon. A bladed ape was the king of the forest and had become a class 7 beast. Because it was a pack beast, hordes of bladed apes infested the forest and wiped out whole towns.

It was only a year ago that it was killed by an army officer from the Blue Sky Kingdom. But the damage was done. Many people were killed but even more were maimed when the bladed apes attacked villages before being driven back.

As a result, when they opened up the shop they were swamped with people after the second day. Before that many were skeptical that such a thing as replacing an arm was a myth. They had already made over 20 gold from selling prosthetics.

Chu Shen sighed. Dealing with customers was easy. They saw it as buying a service so it was over quickly. Dealing with people who wanted to thank them and repay them with their lives or other things was NOT as easy. It was just too embarrassing.

He heard the door open. Looking up a man was built like a mountain  with a black mask was looking back at him. With a quick glance he saw that the man was not missing any limbs. Curious, Chu Shen got back up and sat down behind the desk.

“This is the Prosthetic Shop, how can I help you.” He said politely.

“Oh. So you are the brat who figured out how to make fake limbs.” The man came in and stood towering above him. “I am Slaughter.”

“Nice to meet you Slaughter. It seems like you aren’t missing any limbs so can I ask what you are here for?” Chu Shen asked calmly but sweat was starting to bead up on his head. This guy seemed to be here for dishonest purposes.

“Well that’s the thing.” The man leaned one huge arm on the desk while scratching his head with the other. “You see. My employer just so happens to be a fellow craftsmen. And when he heard that you could make someone an arm he got curious. So would you mind sharing just how you do it?”

A powerful force pressed down on Chu Shen. Putting both hands on the desk, Slaughter leaned forward and looked directly in his eyes. “And since I am such a nice guy, how about you give it to me for free hmm?”

Sweat poured down Chu Shen’s back in buckets. This guy was serious. But revealing the fabber would be a serious issue. ‘Lucas, why did you have to leave today! I hate you Lucas!’

“Well sir, that is a very sensitive issue you are asking me for. Unfortunately I don’t think I could give it to you, or even sell it.” Chu Shen said as apologetic as he could look.

“Bullsh*t. I don’t want to be accused of bullying someone of the younger generation but I need that technique. So hand it over or I can kill you and wait for your partner to come back and ask him, okay?” Slaughter’s blood red color eyes stared at Chu Shen through the mask.

However, the door swung open to the Prosthetic Shop. Slaughter immediately stood up and turned towards the person. It was a man with black hair with gray streaks. Beside him was a man who seemed to be half metal. Both legs and one arm were a dull metal and both eyes were also made of metal.

It was the man who Chu Shen had escorted out of the shop not even a half-hour ago! “Slaughter. This is the shopping district under the management of the City Lord. It would be best to know when to stop. Don’t think you can blot out the sky with one hand.”

Slaughter looked at him for a second before laughing. “Well I think this gives me permission to rough up a couple street vendors without a background don’t you think?” Saying so he tossed over a black medallion. Written on it was one word. ‘Rose’.

Seeing it, the old man’s face turned hard for a second before relaxing again. “Young man, don’t think just because you were hired by the Black Rose Guild that you are invincible. This child just gave my grandson his sight back. I believe it would be better for you to leave.”

“Just leave old man.” Slaughter said. Chu Shen just sat there wondering what was going on.

The old man strode up to Slaughter. “Leave now before I have to teach the younger generation about respecting their elders.”

“I tried giving you face but you ignored me! F*uck off old man!” With a roar he punched outwards, towards the old man. The old man sighed. The fist shot into the old man’s stomach but never contacted. Before it could he bent his body backwards into a bow, narrowly dodging the blow.

Lifting his hand, the old man caught the other fist Slaughter send towards him. Miraculously he had raised his hand before Slaughter even moved his fist as though he could read Slaughter’s mind. Using the caught fist he hurled Slaughter out the door, smashing it to pieces.

Jumping out, the old man faced Slaughter who was just rising to his feet. Surrounding people immediately backed away, wary of being caught in a battle that they didn’t belong in.

A blood red energy covered Slaughter’s body. The old man though did not activate his body shield. With a hand, he gestured to Slaughter.

“Don’t underestimate me you old sh*t!” Slaughter raged at the old man. Orange and red swirled metal gloves appeared around his hands. Punching outwards, Qi surged around it. However, the old man appeared to have a sixth sense and dodged it before the punch was even completed.

Outraged at his blow being dodged, Slaughter let loose hundreds of blows at the old man in less than a minute. However each time he launched a fist the old man seemed to anticipate it and dodged it halfway through its attack.

“Alright youngster, I think I gave you enough of a demonstration.” The old man said while glancing over at Chu Shen.

“Hey! Don’t annoy me you dogfart!” Slaughter yelled, absolutely livid at being ignored like this. All of a sudden though he felt his body shield break and a series of sharp jabs hit all over his body. He lost all sense of feeling and fell to the ground in a senseless heap.

Meanwhile the man Chu Shen had helped earlier started talking beside him. “I returned home and less than ten minutes ago my grandpa came out of closed door cultivation. After I told him what you did for me he said he would teach you some things as a repayment. I hope you accept.”

[Vol 4] Chapter 56: New Arrival

As Aswan was leading the Minya forces, headed for the Gerret household, he noticed a group of warriors riding towards their direction. Aswan frowned a little as he recognized who was leading the group. “Sir Allen!” Aswan said to himself as he was frowning. “Why has he joined this battle? Ducart assured us the Marquis family would not be joining this battle. What the hell happened?” Aswan thought to himself in a little crazed fashion. “It should still be okay. With that trump card of mine and my current strength, I should be able to take the primero knight.” Aswan said consoling himself.

“That’s Aswan leading the Minya forces.” Tadea, one of the knights that had followed after Agness and Allan, said as a strange smile appeared on his face.Ever since they had spoken with Kaban and the rest of Gerret forces, he had been burning with an intense will to fight. The strength Willard had displayed and the fashion the Gerret warriors had reverently described it made him thirst for battle even more. “It’s been a while I, Tadea, have been this excited for a battle.”He said as he stared at the incoming enemy. With the affirmation of the arrival of both parties, everyone knew a large scale battle was about to begin.

“Agness, you will be in charge of leading the squadron of warriors. Tadea, your job will be to take the Dark leaf squad leaders on the Minya forces. You all are to leave Aswan to me. No matter what you do, do not engage that man. He might not be famed for his strength, but he isn’t someone that can be easily beaten,” Allan said as he inserted more force to whipping his mount, which saw made the mount pick up its pace to lead the attack. Following closely behind Allan was Tadea, who had a brimming smile.

*********************

Svecko was like a lifeless frozen puppet, as he stared at Willard. Without much of a moment’s warning, Svecko seemed to have disappeared from Willard’s view. The sudden disappearance of Svecko, had hugely shocked Willard, who immediately radiated a combination of that strange energy and his earth elemental energy. Willard had chosen to do this because he wasn’t entirely confident in using his earth elemental energy in detecting Svecko. Within less than a second of radiating the combination of both his earth element energy and the unknown red energy, Willard felt an intense cold bridge the back of his skull. The coldness he suddenly felt was nothing like the original domain Svecko had shown earlier. This coldness was worlds apart from the first snow domain Svecko had released, this coldness was chilling right down to one’s soul. Because of the level Willard’s soul had attained, he wasn’t affected too much by the soul freezing effect of the piercing cold.

Willard instinctively released all the stored up lightning within his body to the back of his skull, whilst doing that, he controlled the flow of lightning from the sky down towards his body at the same time. As the lightning within his body flowed to combat the piercing cold that had invaded his body, Svecko was inwardly surprised. If any other person had seen Svecko’s face, they would not have been able to tell he was surprised because of the state of his body. “How is his soul not yet frozen?” Svecko couldn’t help but think. Svecko had been confident in ending the battle with just that one move, but somehow Willard had not only survived but had also attempted countering his attack. This truly shocked Svecko, because he knew how utterly devastating that attack was. Not all level 3 saints had the power to completely shake off the soul freezing effect of his attack, the way Willard had done. And definitely, no one below a level 3 saint should be able to survive it. How could Svecko know the level Willard’s soul had possibly attained?

“What is this energy?” Svecko thought as he noticed traces of the unknown energy Willard was cultivating. “It feels familiar, but also strangely different from all the energies known to me.” As the stored up lightning within Willard’s body was getting used up, a flurry of purple lightning once more descended from the sky, striking Willard’s body. The lightning bathed Willard like he was one of those legendary lightning fiends. With the re-enforcement of the lightning, Willard was finally able to defend against Svecko’s attack. A new sense of fright gripped Willard as he immediately bolted several meters away from his original position. After Willard experienced that attack from Svecko, he had gained a thorough understanding of his current power limits. Without a doubt, he knew he was qualitatively on a lower power base than Svecko, even with the aid of the unknown energy he was cultivating.

“You are full of surprises. But if this is all you have, you will sure die here today.” Svecko said in an eerie voice, as he once more proceeded to attack Willard. At this point, Willard completely gave up all thoughts of winning the battle. He immediately put all of his efforts to escaping Svecko’s presence. Willard used his movement technique aided with the unknown energy and ran in the opposite direction of the Gerret household. He knew if he was going to escape his current predicament, he had to find a way of to leave the confines of Marquis city.

“Trying to escape? That is not possible child,” Svecko said as he once more gave chase to the escaping Willard. It did not take too long for Svecko to once more catch up to Willard and attack again. This time, Svecko punched straight at Willard, and as he did, a strange sort of restriction, in the form of extreme frost, was placed on Willard. Willard gritted his teeth as he moved both his arms to try and defend Svecko’s attack.

The moment Svecko’s punch made contact with Willard’s arms, a strange restraint once again flowed towards Willard’s soul. This time, the freezing impact was a hundred times stronger than the earlier attack. With the increase of the soul freezing, Willard was immediately put in a dazed state. He had completely lost all awareness of his surroundings and was gradually losing all cognisance of himself. A silvery stream of translucent matter, that was neither liquid, solid or gas, flowed to the source of the crippling effect on his soul. After what seemed like an infinite amount of time, freezing effect on his soul was broken off.

As Willard came back to his senses, he realized he was laying on the floor. He quickly understood what had happened and what his current situation was. Svecko’s attack had frozen his soul and also sent him flying horizontally across a path. A sudden look of surprise appeared on Svecko’s face as he noticed Willard had come back to live. “Impossible! How can he still be alive?” Svecko said in complete astonishment. Currently, the white glow emitted from Svecko’s eyes had considerably reduced in intensity. From this one could tell that Svecko had unleashed his most powerful attack, and yet Willard had still survived. “How is that even possible? It only took him just a moment to break free.” The intent to Willard increased to an even greater length in Svecko’s mind. If Willard was capable of surviving his most powerful attack at this stage of power, how terrifying will Willard get when he reached his level?

Svecko raised his right hand and moved his palm in a right rotating fashion. Right above Willard’s body, an ice spike was hastily forming. The moment, the spike was completed, Svecko moved his hand downward in a tugging fashion. The spike came flying towards Willard’s head at great speed. The moment just before the spike could strike his body, a golden metallic cocoon covered his body.

“Senior snow of the West, why are you trying to kill a child of my Amber kingdom?” A gentle voice said as a middle-aged man slowly descended from the skies. The middle-aged man had long golden blonde hair, that match his soothing calm voice. This man that was descending, was the Jayesh’s associate that had left the carriage earlier. “He broke through my spatial sealing quite fast.” Svecko thought to himself without uttering a single sentence. Svecko stared at the middle-aged looking man for a couple more seconds and said, “Who are you?”

“My name is Bryant Westplain, but I don’t think someone of your class would have heard of me.” The middle-aged looking man said with a smile. Svecko thought about all the famous saints located in the Southern kingdoms, and there was no one he knew off with that name. A little frown appeared on Svecko’s face. He wasn’t entirely sure of what power level Bryant had, but he currently was in a depleted state after he unleashed his previous attack on Willard.

“Do you plan to stand in my way?” Svecko said in a hoarse tone.

[Arc 3] Chapter 79

Chapter 79
Business

Chu Shen and Lucas got to work. First they had to make a design for the prosthetic. Of course they couldn’t have it run off of a battery. This world didn’t have technology so if they weren’t around when its power went out then what would the poor old lady do?

She would return to being armless of course! So they started adapting it to run off of beast cores, just like Lucas did. Luckily both of them had experience with this so the work was done quickly and efficiently.

First the arm was put together along with motors and hydraulics to move everything. Then there was an indent on the upper part of the arm. Pressing the indent for ten seconds would reveal a small hole meant for the beast core. There was inscriptions placed on the bottom of the hole that channeled the cores energy.

Removing the metal bands around it holding the core in place, one could then replace it with another core. It could also be expanded an inch or two, allowing for more powerful beast cores to be loaded into the socket. After all, a beast core’s level was determined by how big it was though usually it was only an inch difference between levels.

Finally there was the attachment socket and nerve reader. Intercepting and understanding the electric signals sent by the brain to the non-existent arm, the prosthetic was able to understand exactly what to do. Of course, there was also the calibrations that needed to be done on sight.

Finished, Chu Shen and Lucas set out to the old lady’s house within the hour. Arriving they discovered the old lady wasn’t exaggerating when she said it was a wooden shack. It was a single room house that was made of basically twigs. It looked like a strong wind would blow it down.

The only source of fire to cook with a dented and rusty old kettle next to a campfire pit outside. Chu Shen sighed as he saw these miserable settings. Lucas shook his head as well.

The old lady had her back to us stirring whatever was cooking inside the kettle with her one hand. The other still had bandages on it. Chu Shen quickly got her attention by clearing his throat. “Ahem. Mam, we arrived like we said we would.”

The old lady quickly turned around and greeted them. “Ah yes! It’s the young benefactors. I apologize for not noticing you sooner.”

Lucas quickly waved his hand in front of him. “Please don’t be so formal. We were just helping out like any other human would do.”

She quickly shook her head. “That may be so but you still deserve respect. Not to mention you might be able to fix my arm. That is going far beyond what I deserve.”

“Cough, cough. Ling Xi, are those the young boys you told me about?” A hoarse voice called out from inside the hut.

“Yes it is. Now be quiet, you need your rest.” The old lady, Lang Xi, quickly poked her head inside the hut and scolded. Obviously this was the sick person they needed to hire the doctor for.

“Come here boys, Cough Cough.” Chu Shen and Lucas walked in to see an elderly old man who looked to be in his late fifties lying on a blanket in the wooden hut. Bowing their heads respectfully, Chu Shen and Lucas stood beside the old man.

The old man tried to sit up but Ling Xi quickly held him down. “Stop moving! You need your rest!”

“No!” The old man shrugged her off of him. Looking at both of them for a couple seconds he nodded. “Please youngsters, tell me your names and how old you two are.”

“I am Chu Shen, 13 years old and this is Lucas Webil, fifteen years old.”

Lucas looked at Chu Shen. “I thought you were twelve.”

He shrugged. “I had my birthday two months ago.”

Lucas shook his head. “We’ll have to celebrate later then.”

A cough interrupted them. Looking back at the old man they both grinned sheepishly.

Ignoring the small outburst, the old man nodded. “And I am Lang Wen, you two youngsters have a bright future. Thank you for saving my wife and granddaughter’s lives. If not for you I would have lost them. If there is anything I can do let me know.”

“We will. Now we have what is needed to regain your arm. However, before it is perfected we need to run some tests, please step outside.” Chu Shen asked Lang Xi politely. They both went outside back to beside the cooking stew.

Lang Xi seemed hesitant at first before shrugging. Her instincts told her these kids wanted to help her. So she decided to trust them. Unwrapping the bandage, she exposed her cut off arm. Normally a person would still have scabs and tissue hanging out. However, Chu Shen gave her medicinal pills earlier that healed her arm in the hour they were apart.

It was considered quite fast for a pill and it cost forty silver to buy. Very expensive and a staple of any mercenary.. But to Chu Shen it was worth it since it would only take a couple days to earn it back. Otherwise how could they attach the prosthetic?

Taking the prosthetic he activated the socket and put it on the stump of Lang Xi. Unfortunately the arm had no fake skin and was pure metal. But it was still sleek and streamlined, making it look dangerous.

Lang Xi just looked at the metal arm for a second. It resembled her old arm exactly except that it was made of metal. She was puzzled at this outcome. What she was expecting was a medicine that could regrow her arm. This metal arm though…… She just really didn’t know what it was supposed to do.

“What exactly am I supposed to do now.” She asked with a questioning shrug. Then she stopped, frozen. When she opened her palm in a helpless gesture, she felt not one, but two hands moving. Looking down very slowly at the metal hand, it was in the same position as her other hand, though it was off by a couple inches.

Ling Xi just stared, frozen, at the metal arm. Tears slowly trickled down her cheek. She never truly thought that these young boys could actually give back her arm.

“All right then. Since we can confirm it works, let’s fine tune it shall we? First close your eyes and lift your left hand directly above your head. Now your other. Okay, let me adjust this hereeee……. Done. Okay try it again.”

“Now try moving your fingers. Just your pointer finger for now. Then the next one. Okay now make a fist.” It was decided that Lucas would do the calibration since he could control the internal systems and adjust them without tools.
Soon Lang Xi was moving her arm like normal. Lang Wen cried as well once they managed to show him his wife’s arm. Taking them aside, Lucas told them what they needed to do to keep it running.

“If it runs out then replace it with a beast core from a lightning attribute beast. Just press here and take out the old one and replace it with a new one. A class 1 beast core will last a year and a class 3 will last fifty years. The current one is a class 2 that should last twenty years so don’t worry.”

Chu Shen and Lucas decided to say goodbye then. However, just as they were about to leave, Lang Wen stopped them.

“Wait a moment young fellows!”

Pausing they looked back at him with a questioning look. “What is it?” Lucas asked.

“I just wanted to ask you how much it cost you to make that arm and can you replace other limbs like eyes or legs.”

“About ten or twelve silver and an hour of work. We can also replace any limb including ears and the like” Lucas replied back.

Lang Wen nodded for a second before springing on them a question. “Ever thought about selling these metal limbs? I mean, this is a mercenary town. Over half the town has lost a limb of some kind even if it is only a finger. You could make a fortune.”

[Vol 4] Intermission 2: Return of the Demon

Ice King It was a peaceful day back at Pharamville. One night had passed since we left the small farming village. The townspeople continued with their daily activies as usual, the only thing that’s changed due to yesterday’s incident, was that the townspeople started to pay respects to the local deity again.

Iqaos, the Nine-Tailed Fox with snow-white fur, was the local deity of Pharamville. He was currently lying lazily beside the shrine and was bathed in the Faith Power of the townspeople. Naturally, since Iqaos was a Spiritual being to begin with, normal people was unable to perceive him.

As explained previously, Faith Power is an intangible energy that the local deities use to create a domain that keep beings with evil intention away. The more powerful the domain, the more effective it is. Naturally, to strengthen the domain, more Faith Power is needed, and to gather more Faith Power, one has to increase their followers.

Ever since the townspeople started paying their respects at the local shrine, they’ve noticed a visible drop of monsters in the surrounding areas. At first, they were quite doubtful and didn’t really believe that it’d work, but after the townspeople received news from the local adventurers that there were hardly any monsters to be found in the surrounding forest, they started to believe that everything we told them yesterday were true.

Because of that, the village chief made it mandatory for all the villagers to offer their prayers at the local shrine at least once a day. Naturally, the one who benefited most from this was Iqaos. Not only was he able to earn Faith Power from doing almost nothing, he was able to get free food from the villagers as an offering to the deity.

Setting up the domain was a one time thing, so long as the domain was set up, it would stay active until the deity ran out of Faith Power or it was personally deactivated by the deity. Basically, Iqaos was living the king’s life.

But of course, there were some risks to it as well. Spiritual beings were a race that was easily contaminated by the malevolence. For that very reason, most Spiritual beings do not stay in close proximity to the human soecity, as places with humans tend to have thick miasma. Once a Spiritual being was bathed in too much malevolence, they would lose their mind and turn into a violent creature. That’s why they need a vessel to prevent that from happening. But of course, even that was not hundred percent foolproof.

“Yawn~” Iqaos let out a yawn and curled up on the grassy field just beside the small temple. He just ate his fill and was lazily nestling on the ground. However, just at this time…

*Twitch! Twitch!*

… his ears twitched twice as he raised his head in alert. He could feel something or somebody entering his domain, someone who harbored an undisguised evil intent.

Iqaos frowned and let out a groan, “… Looks like I have an uninvited guest.”

With that, Iqaos stood up from the ground, and with a “swish,” he disappeared from the grassy field in the blink of an eye.

……

In the forest just a few kilometers away from any human civilization, an “unknown” creature had just entered Iqaos’ domain. That creature had humanoid features, but one thing that was different from a human was that he had horns protruding from the side of his head. This was a creature commonly known as demons.

When the “demon” had entered the domain, he could feel some sort of bizarre energy trying to drive him away. However, he was not so weak as to be driven off by something of this level.

“Ugh… so it’s true… I can certainly feel the power of the domain at work here… Seems like the gods are working hard to rebuild people’s faith in them, another god-demon war will be inevitable…” The demon shook his head in grieve as he recalled the god-demon war that took place a few decades ago.

*Rustle! Rustle! Rustle!*

A shadow brushed the thickets as it ran past the demon. “Who’s there?!” The demon could sense an undisguised hostility from the shadow. He raised his guard and turned around to face the rustling shrubs.

“Hoh… I never expected to see a demon still roaming around in broad daylight…” Suddenly, Iqaos appeared from behind the demon. Without giving the demon a chance to turn around, Iqaos had already launched an attack of his own.

“Now, die!” Iqaos pounced over with his sharp claws that could cut through steel as if it was made out of paper. Sure of his victory, Iqaos let his guard down. However, out of his expectation, the demon’s reaction speed was faster than he predicted.

The demon turned around with unspeakable speed and cladded his left arm with battle-qi to block Iqaos’ claws. He clenched his other fist tightly and concentrated the rest of the battle-qi in that fist to prepare for a counterattack. However, when his fist made contact with Iqaos’ body, he didn’t feel any weight behind that body.

Iqaos had moved with lightning fast speed and avoided the attack in the last second, leaving only his afterimage behind. With a “Ksssh!” Iqaos slid sideways and got behind the demon once again.

This time, he didn’t let his guard down and channeled Spiritual Power into his claws, generating Claws of Wind that could rip even the space apart. Sensing the imminent danger, the demon immediately crushed the crystal ball that he was holding.

When the crystal ball was crushed, a thick and murky energy leaked out and immediately, all the plants in the surrounding area wilted. Iqaos immediately froze on the spot and broke out in cold sweat. The aura that leaked out from the crystal ball was undeniably that of the strongest class of demons, the Demon Lord!

“Im-impossible! This… This isn’t possible! The Demon Lords are supposed to be sealed in the dungeons!” Iqaos was in denial, he simply couldn’t believe that the Demon Lords would be making an appearance now, not after some twenty plus odd years.

“Kehehehehehehehe!” The demon felt a sense of supremacy now that he had gained an advantage over Iqaos, he let out a wicked laugh and continued to add fuel to the fire, “Do you really think the demons are doing nothing over the past two decades of confinement? Wrong!! We have been building our forces and hatched many ingenious plans! And this crystal ball is our latest invention, with it, even a low-class Demon like me is able to borrow a portion of the Demon Lord’s power! Behold! The power of “he” who is only second to the Demon God, the power of the Ice King, Lord Joseph!”

Ice King With that, the demon was enveloped by the thick, murky energy as his body started to transform. Before long, the demon had a completely different appearance. From head to toe, he was covered in black, pointy scales. There were four or five pair of horns protruding from his head, and he had two pair of scaly wings.

Iqaos instinctively moved a few steps backward. He remembered this figure very clearly, this was the figure of the Ice King, the leader of the Demon Lords, and the direct subordinate of the Demon God. He is, without a doubt, the strongest of the Demon Lords.

“Kehehehehehe! All hail Lord Joseph!” With words of praise, the demon launched a seemingly unstoppable attack towards Iqaos. At that time, the only thing going through Iqaos’ head was, “Am I going to die?”

His body was completely frozen stiff from fear. Despite the fact that the borrowed power was less than a tenth of the Demon Lord’s actual power, Iqaos was still intimidated by the figure of the Ice King alone. After all, the Ice King was really too terrifying. In order to flaunt its strength, it single-handedly massacred an army of local deities, and even heavily injured one of the gods.

Iqaos could only stare blankly as the enemy’s fist got closer and closer. Just when the fist was right before his face, Iqaos instinctively shut his eyes tightly.

However… one second… two seconds… three seconds later… the fist still haven’t hit him. Iqaos opened his eyes suspiciously and saw a figure covered in black robe currently confronting the demon. That person had a crystal ball about the size of a basketball on his left hand, it was that mysterious Fortune Teller who Tiffania encountered in a certain faraway town. How he got here in matter of seconds was a mystery in itself. Regardless of that, it was true that he did save Iqaos from certain death.

“W-Who are you…?” Iqaos asked the mysterious Fortune Teller with a shaky voice. However, he did not answer the question and replied with dubious words, “Iqaos, it is not time for you to go yet, you still have a role to fulfill.”

“W-What are you…” Before Iqaos could finish his sentence, the demon retaliated. “Kiiii—! You small fry, begone!”

“We will continue this some other time, but now, we have a more urgent business to take care of!” The Fortune Teller reminded Iqaos to stay alert and continued, “I will extract the Demon Lord’s seed from the demon, take the chance when it reverts back to its original form to finish it off.”

*Nods!*

Iqaos only nodded in silence and turned his attention to the demon. With the help of the Fortune Teller, Iqaos was able to finish off the demon smoothly. Before the demon died, he let out a death throes and keep shouting the name of the Ice King.

When Iqaos turned around to continue questioning the mysterious Fortune Teller, he was already gone without a trace.

“Just… who was that… how did he know my name? What did he mean by a role to fulfill?” Iqaos was filled with one question after another. But then, he suddenly realized something, “That aura I felt from him… it feels oddly familiar…… Wait… he couldn’t be… a god?!”

[Arc 3] Chapter 78

Chapter 78
Old Lady

A black colored fire shot out in a column in front of Lucas. It looked like a flamethrower. With even the slightest touch the trees would vanish into a putrid black ash. The black flame spread quickly, burning holes in whatever it touched, clinging to whatever it burned.

Over a half-mile of forest over twenty feet across was burned to ash instantly and even more was being destroyed as the fire spread. In an experiment Lucas dropped a thing of water on it but it instantly turned into steam without snuffing out the fire.

Chu Shen reached out a hand covered in Qi. As his hand touched the fire he sensed a strong corrosive and burning force trying to destroy it. Instantly he started using null Qi, which cancelled out the destructive forces of the shadow flame.

Observing carefully, as bits of ash landed on the trees surrounding them, they started to wither away from the corrosive force. Chu Shen released a surge of null Qi, putting out the fire and stopping the corrosion of the trees.

Lucas shook his head. “Well. That wasn’t expected.”

Chu Shen shrugged his shoulders. “I don’t know what happened. In terms of instant destructiveness your tools win. However, in terms of killing I think this Shadowflame Primordial Pistol wins. Without my null Qi the Shadowflame would have eventually burnt me to death from just a touch.”

Lucas nodded. “Yeah. That shadowflame is insane. It clings to anything it touches, burning and corroding it. It’s like an acidic napalm. It can even burn pure energy. It would be exceedingly troublesome to deal with.”

Lucas then looked at Chu Shen’s Primordial Pistol. “Well we test fired the shadow flame ape core. Let’s try the stone frogs instead.”

Nodding in agreement, Chu Shen aimed at the forest. Pulling the trigger his pistol fired.

A brownish-yellow colored beam shot out and struck the trees in front. Instead of smashing the trees, an earthen shell formed around the trees encasing them in over meter thick rock. Firing the laser pistol at the tree it was revealed that besides the rock covering the tree nothing else happened.

Chu Shen handed the pistol to Lucas. “Alright, fire it at me. I need to see how powerful it is.” Lucas fired it at Chu Shen. Just like with the trees he became encased in rock.

All except for his head. A gray helmet made of null Qi protected it from being encased in stone. However, Chu Shen was not able to move. Trying to break apart the rock he couldn’t even budge. Circulating his Qi he unleashed a vibrational force. Cracks appeared on the stone but nothing else happened.

Using up more Qi he used Song of The Universe to slowly weaken the rock covering. Then with a quick jerk he destroyed the cracked rock cocoon. Gesturing towards himself he looked at Lucas.

“Fire it again. I need to know something.” Nodding Lucas fired the earthen colored beam. This time after being encased in rock Chu Shen suddenly used a burst of null Qi in a shockwave around him.

When it came in contact with the rock shell it instantly shattered back into earthen colored energy before being absorbed into the null Qi. The Qi shot back into Chu Shen who absorbed it.

Chu Shen stretched his back for a second while laying out his thoughts on the new weapon. “It might not be as destructive, but it certainly can hold someone off. Unless they are a Martial Practitioner it should be able capture them for a good thirty minutes. Otherwise it might delay them for a minute or two.”

Lucas nodded. “Agreed. Physically you are as strong as a Martial Student Level 8 and even you had to use a martial art to weaken it. Unless they have an unarmed martial art it should hold them up long enough to kill them or escape.”

“Okay, since we tested out the new weapons we should head back. I am pretty tired from all the hunting we did earlier.”

“Alright wuss.”

“Hey! Just because you’re a cyborg and can’t get tired doesn’t mean you can look down on me!”

“It’s not my fault that you’re fatigued so don’t blame me for pointing out facts.”

“ARRGH.” Chu Shen threw his hands in the air and stomped huffily towards the hotel. Lucas chuckled and followed him a victorious smirk on his face.

The next day they got up to go hunting like they normally did. But while walking through town they encountered some weird rumors…

“Hey did you hear about that battle yesterday?”

“Yeah. I heard that it was a class 5, maybe even a class 6 beast.”

“Nah. I heard it was several class 5 beasts with a fire and shadow element between them.”

“I saw the wrecked forest myself. If I had been there then I would have died just from the aftershocks. Luckily it’s an isolated section of the woods so no one died. Probably.”

Lucas and Chu Shen looked at each other with an awkward grin at each other. How could they know test firing some weapons would cause such a disturbance.

Shrugging it off, they both went back to their regular process of hunting primordial beasts for money. Chu Shen and Lucas were in the middle of killing a pack of wind wolves when something disturbed them.

“AAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!”

A high pitched scream echoed out from inside the forest. With no hesitation Chu Shen immediately smashed the wind wolf he was fighting into the ground and ran off towards the sound of the scream.

Simultaneously Lucas activated his plasma gauntlet, making a blade of blue iridescent plasma jut out from his gloved forearm. Swiping it at two wind wolves he cut them in half and ran after Chu Shen.

Quickly arriving from his movement technique, Chu Shen came across a heart rending scene.

A young girl of about eight was huddled against a tree screaming while a fairly old lady was standing in front of her. One of the old lady’s arms was missing, the stump still bleeding.

Facing them was a bladed ape. A metal attribute level 3 beast that had extremely hard metal blades that grew all over its body. It had a human hand in its mouth and was eating it. It was no surprise considering the beasts habits. It would slice its prey up into pieces before devouring them. The Bladed Apes loved it when it’s prey was in fear.

Chu Shen rushed in right as the bladed ape swung down at the old lady’s neck. Swinging his hammer he hit the apes side, crushing it’s ribs and sending it flying.

When it landed it immediately tried to get up and run. Before it could a beam of energy shot through it’s forehead, killing it instantly. Lucas holstered his laser pistol before walking up to the old lady. Taking out some gauze, he helped staunch the bleeding.

Taking out a blood coagulating pill, Chu Shen gave several of them to the old lady before moving onto the young girl. She had nothing wrong with her thankfully. Lucas checked out their surroundings before declaring it safe. Chu Shen then asked some questions.

It turns out the old lady was a herb gatherer. Risking her life she would go into the outskirts of the forest and forage for herbs there. Usually she would have her husband with her but he fell ill. In order to pay for the doctor she needed to gather herbs quickly so she took her granddaughter with her.

Unfortunately a Bladed Ape found them on the outskirts and chased them deep into the forest where they were currently. Feeling pity, Lucas and Chu Shen agreed to escort them back to town.

They soon arrived back in town with a minimum delay from Lucas avoiding all primordial beasts unlike their usual hunting. As the old lady and the young girl started heading back Lucas followed them with his eyes.

“I feel really bad for her.”

“Yeah. With her arm gone how can she be expected to fend for herself now. Not to mention she still has to go back and gather more herbs for the doctors bill.”

Lucas adopted a thoughtful look. “You know. I scanned her arm. I think I can make a prosthetic for her now.”

Sighing Chu Shen agreed. “Well if we can help her we should. It’s just too pitiful to see them like this.”

Running after the old lady he quickly reached her. “Hey, mam! Mam! Wait up for a second.”

The old lady looked back and stopped, bowing towards him. “Yes benefactor, how can we poor people help you.”

“I think we can help you with your arm.” The old lady looked at him for a second, confused, before the words he spoke sunk in. Wide eyed with shock she stammered out.

“I-i-is it t-t-true. C-can you really help me regain my arm?!”

Chu Shen nodded. “Yes but we need an hour or so to make preparations. Could you tell us where to find you?”

The oldy lady quickly nodded. “We live on the street behind the Mystical Herbal Garden, in the wooden shack three houses down.”

“Alright. We will go there once the preparations are done.” With that said they quickly returned to the hotel room to start fabbing a prosthetic for the old lady.

[Arc 3] Chapter 77

Chapter 77
Testfire

“So before we testfire these things how about I go ahead and try out my other tools so we can compare them?” Lucas begged Chu Shen.

Rolling his eyes, Chu Shen agreed. “Fine, but only the offensive ones. I know you are experimenting with the force fields still but we need to have firepower.”

“Fine.” Lucas conceded. Ever since he started inventing more things Chu Shen had looked into getting him a spatial ring. However, they were very expensive. So instead they got a bag that Chu Shen inscribed with the [Earth Shattering Inscription].

With the inscription, the bag lightened everything inside the bag. They also paid for a [Shrinking Inscription] which made whatever was put inside the bag smaller. It was similar to spatial rings but not quite since it didn’t create a pocket dimension.

They paid extra to see the inscription master inscribe it and then Lucas copied the scene down along with the energy readings. Thanks to that he was able to inscribe the inscription on small pouches he wore on his clothes. There was over a dozen pouches including the backpack he wore.

Speaking of the backpack, many people wore bags slung over their shoulder, not a pack strapped to their pack. It attracted much attention and eventually people started trying to recreate it. Once it succeeded, it became wildly popular since it didn’t restrict arm movement much.

Lucas withdrew a small gun very similar to the prototype gun without the socket. Aiming at a tree trunk in front of them, he fired. A red beam of energy shot out and disappeared instantly.

Looking at the trees in front of them a pencil width hole had been punched through the tree and even several trees behind the first one. The wood around the hole was scorched and even some flames started up.

Obviously this was the laser gun. It could pierce through any of the class 4 beasts body shield easily. Not to mention that it could continuously produce that beam of energy for over five minutes before the barrel needed to be cooled down. But over 20% of the energy would be consumed.

Next he took out a round ball the size of a softball. Gripping it tightly it flashed blue once. Throwing it outward, within a breath of time it suddenly exploded outwards.

A sphere of blue energy shot out before being sucked back into the ball. Glancing where the ball was there was a perfect sphere cut out around the metal ball including rock. An extreme heat still lingered in the air.

This was a plasma grenade that would send out a large wave of superheated plasma in a 100 foot diameter. Using magnetic fields it would control the ionized plasma to stay in this perimeter before sucking it back into the ball.

By providing it with some energy it could then reheat the plasma, it could also be remote activated making it a very versatile tool. Lucas stretched out his hand and the ball flew into his hand. Using a magnetic grappling hook was useful sometimes.

Finally Lucas took out a pair of elbow length gloves. The gloves also had a rectangular box-ish thing attached to the top of the forearm. It was round and streamlined but it still looked like a box. A barrel poked out the end of it, ending just above the wrist.

Lucas put on the gloves. “You know, I made this last time and I haven’t had a chance to fire it yet. It’s a railgun. However, as you know lightning steel is far superior to any superconductor in my dimension when it is at a hundred percent purity. As a result, this tiny railgun is almost as strong as a fighters.”

Aiming with his right hand, he unleashed a shot at a small grove of trees about two hundred feet away.

BOOOOOM CRA-CRA-CRA-CRAAAAACK

Flinching from the loud sound of a bullet flying at Mach 20, Chu Shen quickly looked at the grove to assess the damage. There wasn’t any trees left. At all. For over half a mile where Lucas had fired it.

Lucas shrugged. “Not as powerful as I thought. I loaded a blunt round so that it would crush the target instead of pierce it. I have a piercing round in the left glove though.”

Chu Shen quickly waved it away. “NO! DON’T FIRE IT HERE! If you do you might attract some strong beasts. There are still class 6 beasts we can’t handle. Or at least.” He looked at the destruction in front of him. “I don’t think we can.”

Lucas shrugged again. “Fine. Time to test fire the beast core pistol anyway. Actually, I think we should call it something else.”

Chu Shen rolled his eyes. “Oh yeah? Like what?”

“Like….. Beast Pistols.” Lucas posed with the beast core pistol pointed in the air. Chu Shen promptly face palmed.

“No. Never.”

“Okay. What about….. Primordial Pistol. I mean, you did say these were primordial beasts so it makes sense.”

Chu Shen adopted a thoughtful look before shrugging. “Fine. It sounds better than beast pistol plus it will make you happy.”

Lucas jumped in the air with excitement. “YEEEHA. Anyway, why did you choose these beast cores anyways. I mean, you said we couldn’t use any core but these. So why is that?” He asked with a questioning tilt of his head.

Chu Shen sighed. “Simple. Beast spirits. These cores have a beast spirit in them. You see I told you about soul right?”

“Yep. It controls Qi so you can cultivate.”

“Ah huh. Beasts also have a soul and sometimes it can become trapped inside the beast core. This is a beast soul. By taking a beast spirit and putting it into an artifact there is a possibility of imbuing it with a skill of the beast. Like the shadow fox’s Shadow Cloak. However a beast spirit also recharges the beast core with energy once it’s drained. This way we don’t have to keep on buying beast cores but we can keep on using them.”

Lucas shrugged. “Then why do people keep gathering beast cores. Eventually there would be tons of cores that keep refilling so they can keep on cultivating.:

“You would think so but when an artifact is forged using a beast spirit, the core is also destroyed. So in order to make weapons, one must destroy a beast core. Not to mention that it is not a guaranteed success. Usually several cores are wasted to make a spirit weapon. As a result, more beasts are hunted down to make more weapons as the old ones are destroyed by age or use.”

Chu Shen shook his head. “Anyways you got my hopes up saying you would test the Primordial Pistol. So why are you delaying so long.”

Lucas sighed. “Yeah. So let’s fire this baby up!”

He pointed the Primordial Pistol towards the other side of the forest.

Very slowly he pulled the trigger.

And the Primordial Pistol fired.

Chapter 5: A Bloody Nightmare

George was sweating during the night. His body twitched and turned as he slept. There was a clear expression of fear on his face. The moon shone through the window of his mansion. The light hit him, illuminating his fearful face. Suddenly his eyes opened. His eyes had tears in them.

“What is this feeling?” He asked himself.

He had felt it before, but he could not recall when or why. Somehow he felt as if a piece of his soul had been ripped away. He tried to step out of his bed but fell on the floor. He simply couldn’t muster any strength. A feeling of helplessness arose from within George’s stomach. He knew something was wrong.

“What happened?”

He looked to his side and saw a piece of paper illuminated by the moonlight. He picked up the paper. His eyes scanned the contents.

“This is the paper where I wrote my dream on!” He exclaimed.

He read it thoroughly.

There’s something different.’ He thought.

Somehow the dream he just had was different from the dream he had experienced previously. He tried his best to recall what had happened in the dream he just experienced, but he simply could not remember anything.

He began to feel slightly light headed. His eyes slowly closed and his consciousness faded. He fell asleep.

He awoke in a different world, but a world he recognised all too well. The sun shone upon a small field deep within the dark forest. Within it was a small wooden cabin. George knew this view well, but there was definitely something different.

The evil witch was not there, nor was the child.

“HAHAHAHA” A raspy voice screamed from the cabin “Your eyes are mine!”

George immediately rushed towards the cabin. He was like a spirit as he shot over the field. He barged through the door and saw a horrid sight. The stench of blood was unbearable.

He saw a blood covered table. He saw the mutilated and tortured body of the red eyed child lying upon the bloody table. His clothes were stained red. His body mutilated. Only half of his fingers were still attached to his body, the rest lay in a bloody puddle on the wooden floor.

The most horrifying part was the head of the red eyed child. The small lantern within the cabin revealed the completely detached head. It was as if he had been bitten by a beast.

George tried to throw up, but in his current form he could do nothing. He could merely stare at the bloody scene. It reminded him of crime scenes he had seen in his old world. But even when he worked as a police officer he had seen nothing like this. He looked at the witch. He never knew that such a twisted and frightful creature existed, or maybe he just refused to believe it. From his experience he knew that the creature had done extra mutilations to the poor child’s body even after his head was detached. It was a sickening sight, amplified by the gruesome nature of such a creature.

George did not know what to do. His heart felt empty and ripped away, somehow he felt as if a piece of him had died as well. He collapsed on the ground in and just lied there.

The witch couldn’t see him, and she simply continued with her operation.

“Those eyes…” She murmured “They still sparkle with hope for tomorrow…”

She sounded dissatisfied.

“Let’s throw that hope away!” She screamed while laughing.

Her talon-like fingers pushed into the skin around one of the child’s eyes.

George could not bear the sight of the talons piercing through child’s eyes, but he could not look away. His head was stuck in place, and he had to endure the torturous sight and sound. Like a feral creature she lunged at the eyes. It was as if the eyes were a godlike treasure, but it seemed more like a tiger after a long time without food. She was bloodthirsty and the eyes were her first meal in years. If one were to ignore the current implications of the situation one might consider it a provocative work of art.

However, George did not see it as art. He could only stand and stare. He could hear the sound of talons entering the poor child’s skin. It was like sticking a knife into butter, it penetrated the skin with no resistance.

His mind felt numb. He couldn’t think anymore. He genuinely felt as if a part of him had been ripped away, and, in a way, he couldn’t really comprehend the situation.

Somehow his mind focused on something. He began to hear a song within his head. It was a song he knew. It was a song that he had heard and sang so many times. He felt a warm feeling come over him as the song appeared in his head, and unknowingly he began to sing along.

As he sang the detached eyes of the child began to glow. They shone with a beautiful scarlet light. The room lit up. The dark and evil shadows of the witch danced in the red light. George felt the light encase him and his soul. It held him as he shivered and cried in fear. It comforted him even when it seemed everything had been ripped away. It protected that which was good and destroyed that which was evil.

The witch could not react in time, and the light encased her as well. However, it did not hug her. The witch screamed as the light touched her. It was as if an acid had touched her skin. She slowly melted until there was nothing left, other than a puddle of remains on the wooden floor of the cabin.

George looked up and saw the detached eyes of the child hovering in the air, looking at him. He felt that there was intelligence behind the eyes, as if it wanted to say something. He suddenly heard a voice in his head.

“George, the child can be saved.” The ethereal voice said.

It was not that George did not want to respond, but rather that he couldn’t. He felt an unbearable pressure when faced with such an entity.

“Donate a part of your soul,” The ethereal voice said “and you can save the child.”

George stared blankly at the red eyes.

“You will not die, but you will be weaker.” The voice said “Well?”

George nodded. He did not know why he responded this way, but it simply felt like the only thing he could and should do in the situation.

“Thank you.” The voice said “Your actions will not be forgotten.”

George suddenly felt a strange sort of pain. It struck the depths of his stomach. He felt slightly as if the wind had been kicked out of him. He tried to breathe, but no air came in or out. What did come out was a thick substance. It felt like someone was pulling a clump of long hairs out from his stomach.

Eventually the thick substance had fully been pulled out. George expected to be feeling worse, but he actually felt fairly good. He felt perfectly fine.

The thick substance floated in the air. The eyes looked at it and it immediately split into thin hairs. The hairs floated towards the child and all the detached and attached body parts. In a Frankenstein-like scene the child’s body was repaired. Everything was sown back together using the thin hairs. After a few minutes the child looked like an old teddy bear, which had been repaired a hundred times. Luckily, the hairs disappeared into the skin and he looked as he would normally again.

The ethereal eyes shot back into the eye sockets of the child. George looked at the child in shock. It was as if nothing had ever happened.

George saw the world in front of him fade into darkness, and his body fell asleep.

Samuel woke up in an unfamiliar place.

“Where am I?” He asked himself as he looked around “I can’t see anything…”

Darkness enveloped the world around him. There was a complete absence of light. In the dark room Samuel contemplated his situation. He was afraid of the world around him. It was unknown, and unknown could mean danger. However, Samuel understood that simply sitting and waiting for something to happen would be just as useless as dying. He groaned as he stood up. In shock at his own inability he fell over, his head hitting the hardwood floor.

He tried to move his hands, but his body felt so tired. It was as if his entire body had been ripped apart and rebuilt. He lay on the floor in despair. He understood how truly helpless he was in his current situation.

He wallowed in his own misfortune.

“God! I feel like ****!” He screamed in anger.

He did not fully understand what he said or why he said it, but the anger he relieved while saying it was enough to push him to stand up.

His legs were weak and wobbly as he tried his best to stand. It was as if someone had punched his legs repeatedly, but he was still forced to stand. However, it was not just his legs. His entire body felt bruised and painful.

Even his eyes felt strange. There was something different about them, but he could not pinpoint exactly what. He lifted his feeble arms and felt his eyes.

“What!? He exclaimed in shock.

He did not feel eye, but instead he felt skin. His eyes were closed the entire time. A sense of insecurity came over him. It was all too strange. His body was weak, and he couldn’t even open his eyes willingly anymore. He could only pray that none of the physical effects would remain.

He forced his eyelids open with his fingers. For the first time he could get a clear look at where he was.

He could see that the room was tenebrous. Shadows covered most of the corners of the space, but as his eyes adjusted he saw a horrifying scene transcend before him. The room was red, but it was not originally so. It had been painted as such, but not by traditional methods. He connected the strange smell with the sight before him. It was blood. It was not red paint or dye, but rather it was the most sinister of all reds. Somehow Samuel knew that this was not blood taken willingly.

Samuel felt dirty just by being in the room. Just by being able to smell, see, and touch the blood made him feel sick. He quickly scanned the room for an exit. Even in the absence of light he could identify a door.

He walked towards the door as quickly as he could, but before he reached it he stepped in something. He looked to the ground and saw ash. It was a dark purple ash. Samuel felt as if he was familiar with the ash, but he could not think about any ash he was particularly close with. However, he did feel that the ash was evil in some way.

Samuel scanned the room for one last time, but he couldn’t find anything else so he decided to leave. He placed his hand on the handle of the door and twisted it. The door opened. A sea of light flooded into the room. It temporarily blinded him, but he did not mind it. The light destroyed the dark, and the unknown was gone. All was revealed, and Samuel could finally relax.

When his eyes adjusted to the light he was greeted with a familiar sight.

“This is the field.” He mumbled to himself as he stepped outside.

Thoughts rushed through his mind.

What on earth happened?’ He thought to himself.

He looked at the area around him. It was the same as always, but there was something different. The hostile feeling of the witch was gone. It was just a normal field.

His mind had a sudden flashback. He could remember himself facing and speaking to the witch. He remembered how he was in the field before, but what had happened afterwards?

He looked on the ground and saw a trail of blood. He had a terrifying suspicion that it might be his own. He swallowed his fears and followed the trail of blood to the edge of the field. It led him to the very edge of the field.

He inspected the ground. The blood trail had abruptly stopped. His eyes panned over the ground. He found a familiar book and coin lying at the end of the blood trail.

Samuel picked up the book.

“Possessing Creatures: Basic Manual” He read without hesitation.

He shocked himself. Somehow he read it much faster than normal. Before he would read by splitting words into syllables and letters, but now it was almost as if the words were like images and he recognised them immediately. He hid the book in his clothes.

Samuel knew that this was the book he had brought to the field when he went to go to the witch. He felt a shiver run down his spine. An image of the witch flashed through his mind. He fell to his knees in fear. He recalled an image of the witch opening her mouth as she lunged at him.

He began to panic.

“What happened to me!?” He screamed.

It was the second time he had asked the question, but he simply could not understand anything.

Why was he still alive? Where was the witch?

A sound suddenly broke his train of thought.

He jumped up.

Is it the witch?’ He thought.

However, as the sound got closer he realised that there were two people talking.

“Where is he?” A female voice said.

Samuel was too far away to hear it clearly.

“I don’t know…” The male voice responded.

The voices seemed familiar to Samuel, but they were too far away to make out who they were.

The voices got louder and louder as the people got closer to Samuel. Suddenly, two people emerged from the woods and stepped into the field.

Samuel looked at the two people, and they looked at him.

The woman smiled beautifully at him.

“Mother! Father!” Samuel shouted in joy.

He ran towards them, forgetting about his frail body.

They both smiled and hugged him.

“You know…” Richard said “It’s quite incredible that you killed the witch.”

Samuel jerked.

“H-How do you know about that?” He asked.

“Everyone knows about the witch.” Evelina said “Why do you think children are not allowed into the forest?”

Samuel was confused.

“Samuel, unfortunately this confirms some suspicions your mother and I have had.” Richard said.

Samuel looked at them in slight fear.

“What suspicions?” He asked.

Evelina’s expression turned serious.

“We’ve had suspicions that you weren’t quite like other children.” She said.

Richard nodded in agreement.

“We think it’s best that you leave the town.” Richard said “Before the townspeople see you as a demon.”

Samuel didn’t understand what was happening. He looked up at his parents.

“Am I a demon?” He asked while crying.

Evelina smiled.

“Maybe.” She said “But you’re our little demon.”

She ruffled his hair.

Samuel didn’t know how to feel.

“What do you mean I should leave the town?” He asked his parents.

“We have been thinking about this for a while.” Richard said “We decided that if something strange happens we would send you to live with your grandparents.”

Samuel remembered the picture in the basement.

“My grandparents?” He asked.

Evelina nodded.

She knelt down and pinched his cheek.

“Don’t worry.” She said “We will meet again.”

Samuel looked up at his parents.

“What do you mean?” He asked in confusion and fear.

A red circle appeared behind him. The ground it encased disappeared into pure darkness.

“We’ll meet again in a couple years.” Richard said as he pushed Samuel into the circle.

Samuel fell into the darkness. It swallowed him and his consciousness. And once again he was in surrounded by the thing he was so afraid of: pure darkness.

[Arc 3] Chapter 76

Chapter 76
Cliffhanger

Bang

Chu Shen flew backwards as a black hairy arm retracted. Lucas punched the ape in the back, making it stumble backwards. Reaching back it grabbed his hand and threw him away into a tree over 100 meters away. Lucas rolled to a stop but instead of rushing back to help he stood there watching.

The ape snorted as a black flame appeared around its body. The black flame lumped together in the ape’s palms, forming a flaming glove over it. Suddenly the ape punched forward towards Chu Shen who had just gotten up.

A gloved fist made of Qi surged towards him. If he didn’t block it then Chu Shen would certainly suffer.

Suddenly a gray glow appeared around him in the form of armor. The Qi formed into a full body armor with sharp edges and spikes sticking out of the joints and forehead.

The fist hit the armor and seemed to sink into it. The gray armor suddenly became realistic where the fist hit, like it was true armor and not a martial art.

Chu Shen suddenly blurred and disappeared. The ape quickly turned around, looking for it’s foe. A hammer struck the ape on the side of the head sending it smashing into the ground, completely ignoring it’s black flame armor.

The ape only had a slight discoloration on its skull from the strong hit but unexpectedly it didn’t get up. As it laid there a gray liquid slowly oozed out from its ears.

Chu Shen nodded as he looked at the result of his training. For the past month both him and Lucas had been coming into the forest and finding strong beasts like this to fight.

Everyday they would try out new inventions and martial arts, trying to perfect their understanding. So far, Chu Shen had been able to advance to the first stage of the Song of The Universe, The Stars Dance, Comet Travels Through, and Cancellation Armor.

The stars dance was about short precise movements making it a great dodging technique while comet travels through was about fast straight movements. It was best used to close the distance between opponents which was how he used it against the shadow flame ape.

Song of The Universe was also used in his hammer blow. Using his Qi to pass vibrations through his hammer he liquified the apes brain, killing it with one blow. Unfortunately until he reached another stage this only worked on bare skin.

He practiced his Void King technique as well, breaking through to the nineteenth circulation. Now his skin was as tough as black iron, letting him take medium strength blows head on of those at the same level as him and getting away with only a bruise.

He was now as strong as a Martial Student level 9 as a Martial Student level 4. His strength had increased from 30,000 pounds to 35,000 since he broke through to level 4 and he had increased his strength by using the Void King technique. He increased it by 1955 to 36,955 pounds.

While this may not seem like a lot remember that a level 1 Martial Student only had 20,000 pounds of force. Not the 30,000 that he had when he broke through. At the same stage most cultivators would have 25,000 pounds of force. This mean he had almost 40% more strength than other cultivators.

Lucas on the other hand had definitely grown a lot as well. While they were not able to kill a primordial beast every day they did kill a lot of them. Most of the primordial beasts were class 4 with a couple being class 3 beasts that attacked them.

Of course, Lucas was able to avoid a vast majority of class 3 beasts with his tracking program but occasionally there was exceptions. Most beasts had exceptional senses so if the beasts wanted to track them down the most they could do was keep ahead of the beasts.

Instead of avoiding such determined beasts, Chu Shen and Lucas would kill them. Using the money earned from the pelts, beast cores, and meat they were able to pay for their hotel and daily expenses.

However the most important thing was that using the money they were able to buy more raw materials for the fabber. Lucas was overjoyed when they were finally able to create a laser pistol.

But the one thing that truly surprised Chu Shen was when Lucas asked Chu Shen to teach him about inscriptions. It turns out he was a natural. To inscribe inscriptions one needed to channel energy into the ink as they made a pattern on the object.

One needed to fluctuate the energy as they inscribed in order to create the perfect inscription. It required intense concentration to accomplish. For Lucas however it was easy. Chu Shen was shocked at how easy it was to grasp what he had been trying to master for seven years.

Shaking his head wryly Chu Shen could only attribute it to karma. It was just like how shocked Lucas was when he himself mastered engineering to Lucas’ level in a year.

He could read energy levels using his scanners and then replicate them using his body as a circuit. Channelling electricity to replicate Qi he could energize the inscription ink. Of course he could also replicate the inscription drawing exactly.

They hunted down lightning frogs, a class 3 beast with a lightning affinity. Plugging the beast cores into the modified channelling inscription several at a time Chu Shen and Lucas would take a day off to recharge Lucas each week.

Chu Shen would reflect on improvements he could make to his martial arts. Lucas also would have the fabber make several things while he recharged. By now Lucas was very satisfied with how everything was going.

Lucas and Chu Shen headed back to the hotel with the corpse of the shadow flame ape in their spatial ring. Corpses of several class 3 wind wolves were also stored.

After selling the corpses they quickly went back to the hotel. Lucas had been talking to Chu Shen about an idea he had. Once there Lucas got to work using a model pistol. The pistol had a very weird powersource.

Instead of a powercell there was instead a round slot as though it was meant for something else………

Taking out the round indent from the pistol, Lucas also took out some inscription ink. Drawing a modified amplification and channelling inscription on it took a while. About half an hour before it succeeded.

Finally Lucas put it back. Chu Shen on the other hand was almost done with his version as well. After another ten minutes he finished with his. He wiped sweat off his brow.

“Lucas you monster. I spent eight years learning this from my master and you somehow still beat me. You’re like a machine, you never even mess up the inscription.” Chu Shen shook his head.

“How apt your words are chap. Anyway let’s get to work my good boy.” Lucas said in a British accent. Chu Shen punched him lightly in the arm.

Shrugging it off he picked up the shadow flame ape beast core. He plugged it into the inscripted socket which he had put back in the pistol. Chu Shen did the same with a stone frog core.

“So what do we do now?” Chu Shen asked.

“Now we test it out. But……. We can’t exactly fire it in our room.” Lucas shrugged helplessly. “We could try it out on the outskirts of the forest but it is late.”

“Well I can’t stand the cliffhanger, can you?” Chu Shen asked.

Lucas nodded. “ It won’t take too long.”

Chapter 6 – A Fresh Start

“Welcome home honey, how was your first day at school?” Mingxia asked.

“It was great! I became the class president, and also got the tuition waiver. The principal also gave me an allowance of 500 gold coins from the school for scoring a perfect on the mock exam.”

“My God! 500…gold…honey…you…are you really my child?”

“Mom…it’s just money…the test was really easy. I had nothing to do but study anyways since I’d always been bedridden. We can at least finally move to a better place soon.”

“Mmm. We’ll finally be able to live comfortably from now on.”

“Okay, I have work to do, call me down when dinner is ready.”

“Okay.”

To the rich, 500 gold coins was an amount that was not worth looking at. To them, it was nothing more than pennies being found on the street. But, to the lower end of the middle class, this kind of money could change their lives. This amount of money was equivalent to three months pay for Xing Huang’s father. A house in an okay developed area was only 1000 gold a month for 15 years. As for the houses in the well-developed area cost 10-100 times that depending on where and how the house was built and made.

But, this was not the most important thing Xing Huang was worried about. Since, he knew that as he did well in school, money would easily flow in. Even then, once he found out where he could access the resources of the Organization, he could start to take on missions to earn some money for his family.

****

Meanwhile, while Xing Huang was in his room doing work, someone was speaking about him and what to do with him. In a large room with a table long enough to seat 10 people, there was a mysterious looking man with someone who looked like the principal Xing Huang had met earlier in the day.

As a matter of fact, it was the principal. But, what was he doing with this man? Moreover, didn’t he have a life? Or was he a gay?

“Sir, please have a look at his profile. There is nothing out of order, but what’s strange is that his sickness that was diagnosed hard to fix, was healed miraculously one day.”

“Hmm, interesting. I will look into this later. Keep tabs on him for now, he might be up for the task.” The mysterious man said.

“Of course sir. I shall take my leave then.”

‘This is quite interesting indeed, a sick kid getting better out of the blue. It seems that he might’ve had some help. If so, I should tread with caution, just in case his backer is someone powerful. No matter what, if he is of standard, we must keep him close. He might be able to save our school.’ The chairman said inwardly.

At that time, the space around the old chairman seemed to have rippled as an ancient portal appeared. Above the gate was an enchanting dragon. But what was more enchanting was that a man could be seen slowly walking out of it.

“Qing Xiang, looks like you haven’t been too battered by time.” A mysterious man voiced.

“Not any better than you Long Zhi, I thought you had left. I didn’t think that you were still around here. I know you are not here to drink tea, so what do you need?” Qing Xiang (the chairman) replied.

“Haha, getting to the point as fast as always I see. Well, I believe that you too have sensed the great qi fluctuation.” As he then solemnly said: “The time has come. You remember what I told you years before when I first came here? We now must take measures to make sure the young ones are prepared in case we need to arm ourselves. The era of peace is now slowly dying.”

Sigh I was hoping it was just my old age that was acting up, but it appears that I was just trying to push the issue aside for as long as possible. Since we must, then let us prepare well.” He spoke, as he said in remembrance: “Ah! Yes, I was going to see you too. Come, take a look at this boy’s profile. It is quite strange. There’s this feeling I can’t shake off.”

[Arc 3] Chapter 75

Chapter 75
I Like Your Friends

Ignoring Lucas’ lame attempt at a joke, Chu Shen had Lucas take over the fabber. After all Lucas knew what would be most compatible with his body.
Bringing up some prosthetic designs, he quickly modified them to fit his destroyed leg. He also left out the battery, deciding to hook it up to himself.

Finally it was time.

Pulling out the materials, Lucas loaded them into the fabber. With a whir, the fabber booted up its internal systems.

The fabber was separated into three parts. The first was the processor. Here it broke down any materials placed inside and then separated the materials. Then came the preparation center.

Here the materials were prepared. By that, it meant mixing different materials together to get the proper ratio. Sometimes compound materials were needed to make a product so synthesizing the materials together was done inside the fabber.

This time there was nothing that needed to be synthesized so there was minimal preparation needed. The last part was the laser printer. Using the laser printer, or rather the gravity-modulator, the materials would be easily manipulated into shape and bonded together at an atomic level.

The fabber itself was the size of two phone booths laying side by side on the ground. Half was filled with machinery and the other only a frame with a clear material around it.

As the construction of the prosthetic advanced to the laser printer a beam of red light shot out from the frame and hit the floor. It was a laser scanner that took measurements to an atomic scale, coincidentally it was what gave the laser printer its name.

The air seemed to warp slightly in the area as a black sheen tinted with silver shot out of the skeletal frames. With visible speed the prosthetic appeared, just like someone was removing an invisible curtain.

After less than two minutes, the prosthetic was done. Pressing a button on the side, Lucas opened up the laser printer. Grabbing his prosthetic he held it up with an evil grin on his face.

“Haha! I can finally get back my leg! I was slowed down by so much since I lost it!” He sat down on the bed and immediately unwrapped the fake bandage around his leg.

Holding up the stump to his leg, a silver liquid dripped out and attacked itself to the prosthetic. Grabbing some left-over materials from the waste tray of the fabber, he held it up to his leg. The silver liquid engulfed the black iron and lightning steel.

The silver liquid surrounded the small seam between the prosthetic and his ‘real’ leg, obscuring it from view. Reaching his hand down, Lucas put his hand right below the silver liquid. It slipped down and formed several silver pill like objects. The prosthetic was now seamlessly attached to his leg.

Lucas brought his hand up to his mouth and swallowed the silver pills. Chu Shen watched this with idle curiosity. If it had been anyone else they would have been freaked out. However, he had been with Lucas for a month previously and he knew exactly what that silver liquid was.

It was Lucas’ repair system. Nanites. Microscopic robots that could repair his systems. Of course, the nanites needed materials in order to repair the systems which was why he needed the black iron and lightning steel. He also ate the nanites afterwards to recycle them.

Lucas could have also just eaten the materials but to make the prosthetic would have taken a lot longer. So it was better to use the fabber instead. After all, it was specifically designed to create things unlike his nanites which were meant for general repair.

Lucas stood up on his leg. Testing it out gently at first and then harder, he ran around the room in a blur, making a miniature hurricane. “Hehe. It works! I have my legs back!”

He looked at Chu Shen with a large foolish grin on his face, while Chu Shen smiled back. “So now that you are back in full capabilities, let’s go.”

They could continue hunting around here but eventually they would kill all of the prey from overhunting. So instead they were planning on leaving for a mercenary town by edge of the beast forest.

The beast forests were a stretch of forest inhabited by primordial beasts. Typically when a beast reaches class 9 or 10 it becomes sentient. Or at least, capable of thinking of the bigger picture and communicating.

Beast forests are typically ruled by a class 12-13 beast. Usually these beasts would come to agreement with the surrounding nations. Humans would be allowed into the beast forest but if they died they would not pursue the beasts inside.

It was mutually beneficial because the beasts would become stronger after fighting to the death with humans. At the same time humans would also become stronger after fighting plus they could harvest the beast cores. Not to mention that it culled out the weaker members of beasts.

It was only natural to the beasts that those inferior creatures be culled from the herd. However, the average level of beasts inside the beast forest was typically stages 5-9 with the center of the forest being stronger monsters.

Chu Shen discovered that mercenaries would often hunt inside the forests to gather beast cores. As a result, towns sprung up around the forests. These towns were called mercenary towns. All of this Chu Shen found out after buying an info book for 1 silver bringing their money total to 16 silver.

It was cheap because of how common it was. Only general information was available, along with a basic road map. Studying this Chu Shen found out the closest mercenary town called Letten was over twenty miles away.

Lucas had been told all this information yesterday when he had bought it.

Chu Shen and Lucas left the town until they were a little bit aways. Lucas deployed his jetpack and held out his hand. Chu Shen looked at it like it was a snake.

“What, I’m not going to bite okay?” Lucas asked, looking amused.

“I just want to make sure you aren’t going to suddenly take off again.” Chu Shen said, looking suspiciously at him.

Lucas shrugged before suddenly he jumped forward and grabbed Chu Shen around his waist before he could react.

FWOOOOSH

They instantly shot upwards. “WAAAAAAAAAAA. THIS IS WHY I HATE YOU LUUUUCCCAAAAASSSSSSS!”

HAHAHAHAHA. I love your friends disciple. You should try and get more like this. HAHAHAHAHA.” Master Ti Wu sounded inside his head.

“Shut up master.”

“”HAHAHAHAHA”” Both Master Ti Wu and Lucas laughed at Chu Shen as they rapidly flew north.

Chapter 4: Friend or Foe

The man, or George, was sitting by the patio with his wife. He was reading a book about space and everything in it. It was a popular book written by a well-respected scientist back in his old world. It was his favourite book. He loved it so much because he loved to learn, and he loved to understand. This book allowed him to understand things which he had never even been able to comprehend before. When George went to paradise he discovered that there was so much more to the universe than what the book covered, but this made him love it even more. There was something fantastic about reading the words of someone who was truly ignorant of how massive and incredible reality really is.

But perhaps it was this lack of understanding which makes life so beautiful. Even in paradise George has very little knowledge about anything. He remembered back to the giants he saw back when he was in the line for the cauldron. He knows that there is so much more to life, and he knows that he will probably never know all of it. And he is okay with that.

George looked at his wife sitting next to him. She was bathing in the sunlight. His heart fluttered when he looked at her. There was a new kind of aspect to their relationship. Since they became young again they could do so much more. Not only were they completely in tune and spiritually in love, but for the first time in years they could also satiate a need for love physically. Youth truly is bliss.

However, even after such a long time he still had a strange feeling within his heart. He was so full of worry, worry for the red eyed baby, and it was making him anxious. He did not know why he felt this, but this anxiety was taking a toll on him. It caused George to have trouble sleeping, and when he did sleep he had horrible nightmares.

Every single time his mind begins to rest and he enters the world of dreams he has a nightmare. It is always the same nightmare. It would focus on a child with red eyes. George knew it was the red eyed baby, because those eyes are simply unforgettable. Every time he has the dream it begins with a lovely image of the little child playing in a field, but whenever George begins to feel happy for the child something bad happens. The sky turns dark and everything gets colder. A monster then approaches the child. It was always the same monster. It looked like a ghoul or a witch. It would trick the poor child and then devour the child’s flesh. Blood and horror ensues. George always tried to save the red eyed child, but he is unable to do anything to stop the horrible creature.

One morning George woke up in a cold sweat. He saw that his wife had already gone outside somewhere. He sat all alone and drenched in sweat. He had had the nightmare again.

“Why won’t they stop!?” He asked himself.

An idea suddenly popped in his mind. He remembered reading that writing down dreams can help someone understand if there were any problems. If he could identify the problems causing the nightmares, then that would be the first step to making them stop.

He thought of a diary and a pen, and the items appeared in front of him. Without a second thought he began to write. He did not write from his mind, but rather from his soul. He felt the words simply spill out onto the pages even though in his mind he did not even know what he was writing. As he continued to write he began to feel a comfortable feeling which quickly replaced the initially dark and evil feelings.

Eventually he finished writing. He read through everything that he had written. After reading just a sentence he noticed that the handwriting was strange. It was almost like a different person’s handwriting. He ignored this and began to read the exact words that he had written.

Fear, darkness, and void. Light shines upon the field of grass. It truly is strange. To have such a beautiful field of light surrounded by such darkness. However, even the light contains darkness. A horrible creature stands within the light. Suddenly the creature’s head twitches. It has seen something. A child steps into the bright field. His red eyes reflect the evil of the creature. The child speaks. He stands tall in front of the dark creature. Suddenly everything goes black. A crunch is heard. When vision returns there is blood on the floor. The child is gone.’

George nearly broke down in tears as he read the simple passage. Why was he so emotional about a child he spent such little time with? The rest of what he had written just repeated the same passage over and over. For some reason he knew that this dream meant something. He didn’t want the child to die. But what could he do?

Samuel woke up and saw the book next to his bedside table. He realised he fell asleep trying to read the book again, and he forgot to hide it. He was lucky that his parents didn’t find it. Whenever Samuel saw the book it made him feel so incredibly frustrated. He simply couldn’t understand a word of it, and it was killing him inside. His curiosity and need to learn never allowed him to have a moment where he did not think of the book.

He hid the book, got out of bed, and went off to play with Grace. He slouched everywhere he went. Ever since he read a bit of the book he had been in an angry and depressed mood. He had a strange obsession with it. He just had to learn what was in it, but he simply couldn’t.

He walked onto the market street to head towards the field, still deep in thought. He didn’t look where he was going and accidentally bumped into a large man. He looked up and saw an ugly annoyed face.

Samuel panicked a bit.

“S-Sorry Sir.” He said in slight fear.

The large man saw Samuel’s red eyes.

“Oh, you’re Richard’s kid.” He said in realisation “Haha. Don’t worry about it. Here.”

The large man threw a coin at Samuel, who just barely managed to catch it. The large man then walked off. Leaving Samuel just standing there looking at the coin in wonder.

The coin was copper, but what amazed Samuel were the small drawings and emblems all over it. His eyes widened. He suddenly remembered when he went on a small trip to the marketplace with his father. He remembered how his father had given a similar coin to a shopkeeper, who gave his father bread in return. Samuel suddenly realised what the coin was.

The coin must be something which forces people to give you things!’ He thought.

Samuel heart began to beat as he realised the value of the small copper coin in his hands. Of course, in reality, such a coin did not hold much value at all. It was just about enough to buy bread, but other than that it held little value. Unfortunately Samuel was not well educated on the monetary units in his country and he had misinterpreted this little coin to be worth something much more than it actually was.

Samuel stuffed the coin in his pocket and began to walk off towards the field to play with Grace. When he arrived he saw that Grace wasn’t there yet. He sat on the grass and began to think.

I want to learn whatever is in the book. Except, the only person or creature that might be able to help me would be the zombie witch in the forest.’

Samuel looked towards the forest in the distance. He remembered the encounter he had with the creature. When he thought back to that moment he realised something. The creature had never been hostile towards them. He was the only one who did anything wrong. Looking at the situation from the creature’s perspective would indicate that Samuel was the bad guy. After all, he stole the book from her.

Samuel remembered something his mother told him once.

Don’t judge a book by its cover.’ She said to him

Maybe the creature wasn’t evil at all. Perhaps it was all a misunderstanding.’ Samuel thought.

His thoughts were cut short by the arrival of a happy and smiling Grace.

“SAMUEL!” She screamed “PLAY!”

Samuel smiled and began to play with Grace. However, he couldn’t stop thinking about the zombie witch.

When playtime ended he looked at Grace and said “I won’t be able to play tomorrow.”

Grace was confused, but she saw the seriousness in Samuel’s eyes and nodded in understanding.

Samuel walked home. His mind was set. He would seek out the zombie witch and ask her for help. There was only one little issue. At the moment all he had done was be rude to the zombie witch. What incentive could the zombie witch possibly have to help him?

Samuel arrived at the door to his home. He knocked on the door, but there was no answer. Samuel looked at the sky and saw that it was only a couple hours past noon, meaning that his father was working and his mother was shopping. Samuel remembered that his mother gave him a key to the house in case there was no one home.

He reached into his pocket and felt around for the key. He pulled it out, but realised that instead of just the key, he was holding the coin along with it. His eyes widened. That’s it! He could give the coin to the witch and then she would have to help him. He unlocked the door and walked inside his house.

“Tomorrow.” He said to himself “Tomorrow I will meet the witch. And then I will finally learn what is in the book!”

The next day arrived quickly. Samuel told his parents he was going to play with Grace, but instead he headed off to the forest. He found himself confronted with the dark trees, void of light. He was terrified. But at the same time he was excited. Adrenaline rushed through his body at the thought of what he was about to do. He put one foot forward into the forest and felt a chill travel down his spine. A strange, nearly twisted, smile appeared on Samuel’s face. He entered the forest.

Due to the red cloths, which he had tied around the trees when he went into the forest with Grace, he could find his way fairly easily. The deeper he entered the forest the more fearful he became. Every piece of his body didn’t want to go deeper, but Samuel kept going. His heart beat like a drum, playing an anthem of fear.

Samuel didn’t understand death, but he knew he didn’t want it. He knew that if the witch was mad she could and would kill him. His life rested upon the coin.

Samuel’s head was filled with dark thoughts. But then he saw light.

“The field!” He exclaimed

He stopped before entering. He took a deep breath and attempted to calm his mind. With pure strength and resolve he stepped into the field.

Suddenly his body froze. An immense cold and evil feeling overtook him. The creature appeared in front of him. Her eye sockets stared him directly in the face. The stench from her rotten skin entered Samuel’s nostrils and made him want to vomit. Samuel had to force himself out of his state of shock.

“I have come here to apologise and make a deal with you!” He shouted at the witch.

Silence ensued.

“Speak.” The witch said in amusement.

“I’m sorry I stole your book!” He said “But I beg that you teach it to me.”

A horrible cackling sound emerged from the witch’s rotten mouth. Samuel could only interpret this as laughter.

“Tell me, child.” She said “Why would I teach you anything?”

Samuel swallowed his fears. Everything rested on this moment.

“Because I have this.” He took out the coin.

There was silence once again. The witch seemed shocked.

“A coin?” She asked in bewilderment.

Samuel didn’t know what this reaction meant.

“YOU OFFER A COIN!” The witch laughed “HAHAHA! A COIN! HAHAHA!”

Samuel didn’t find the situation quite so funny. It was clear that the copper coin was laughable in the eyes of the witch. This could bode death.

“I will not accept this coin.” The witch spoke again “But there is something you can give me.”

A glimmer of hope appeared on Samuel’s little face.

“Anything!” He offered the witch.

“Oh, that’s good.” The witch said “Well then, hand over your eyes.”

Samuel’s hope immediately disappeared, leaving a hole within his heart.

“M-My eyes?” He asked, wondering if he had heard her correctly.

“Yes. They are quite peculiar; I’d love to have them.” She said “As you can see, I’m missing a pair.”

She cackled as if it was the funniest joke in the world. When she saw the fear on Samuel’s face she sighed.

“Don’t worry. You won’t have to live without your eyes.” She said “After all, you’ll be dead before I take them!”

Her mouth opened up like a snake’s mouth. It expanded to a size ten times of what it should be capable of. The mouth was easily capable of swallowing a young child whole.

“Goodnight!” The witch shouted as she lunged towards the petrified Samuel.

Chapter 3: The Book

Samuel threw open the door to his home.  With a bright smile on his face he was about to walk in. However, before he could even step inside, his mother had already appeared in front of him.

“Where have you been, young man?” Evelina said calmly.

However, Samuel knew that she wasn’t calm. She was furious. Her face was red and her voice quivered with anger. Samuel knew that putting one foot wrong would lead to serious consequences.

“I… I was playing with Grace.” Samuel said, nervously smiling at his mother.

Evelina crouched down and looked Samuel directly in the eyes. It was as if she was looking into his soul. However, Samuel did not let the psychological penetration of Evelina affect his eyes. He stood tall with a perfect poker face.

“Why are you so late then?” She asked.

Samuel did not let his poker face falter.

“We lost track of time…” He said nervously.

Evelina sighed and let him in.

“Fine.” She said “But make sure to not be out this late again.”

Samuel breathed a sigh of relief.  If he had faltered at any second his mother would have pressed him harder, to the point where he might have had to reveal everything that had happened. And Samuel knew that if he said anything about what had happened his mother would never allow him to leave the house again.

It wasn’t that Evelina was overprotective, but rather that Samuel needed protecting. Not only was he often shy and had difficulty communicating, but he had red eyes. Everybody in the town was used to Samuel and he wasn’t seen as special or evil in any way, but what about outside of the town? How would someone react to seeing Samuel for the first time? Red was often synonymous with evil, and if Samuel was seen as such he would not live very long.

Seeing that Samuel was fine Evelina could also sigh in relief as she let Samuel in and closed the door.

Samuel went to sit down at the dinner table. He put his book down next to his plate and began to eat the wonderful meal his mother had made him. As the phenomenal smell of the meat on his plate entered his nostrils he nearly teared up. There was something about good food after a day of hard adventuring that made him truly appreciate life.

Just as Samuel was about to take a big bite of his luscious steak a large shadow emerged, covering both him and the table. Samuel suddenly felt two large hands grab him and begin to tickle him.

“Hahaha! Dad! Stop!” Samuel said while giggling.

Richard put down his son and sat on the chair next to him.

“You know. You worry your mother a lot when you’re out that late.” Richard said seriously.

Samuel looked a little guilty.

“I know. I won’t do it again.” He said.

Richard patted his sons head and said “Good.”

Richard looked over to the book near Samuel’s plate.

“What’s this?” He asked as he picked it up.

Samuel decided to make up a reason for why he had the book.

“I found it in the field.” He nervously said

Richard blew the dust off the book and read the title of the book.

“Possessing creatures…” He began to read the title but stopped halfway.

SLAP!

Samuel fell off his chair and held his cheek in pain. He looked up and saw his father standing over him. His eyes were serious and intense.

“Don’t. I repeat. Don’t ever even think about this book again.” Richard said “Forget it ever existed.”

Samuel, being a child, couldn’t understand the reason why his father lashed out in such a manner. He had never been hit by his parents, and his father had never even shouted at him before. In confusion Samuel could only begin to cry. Tears flooded down his face.

Evelina immediately rushed over to see what had happened. Upon seeing the look on Richard’s face she started. It had been a long time since her husband had made such a face. She knew something had happened. She looked at the pitiful Samuel, whom was lying on the ground crying. She picked Samuel up and carried him to his room, and locked the door so he couldn’t leave.

Samuel could only sit there, crying in confusion. But while he was confused, he was mostly just hurt. He was truly hurt that his father would hit him, and he couldn’t wrap his head around it.

Suddenly he heard his parents talking about something.

“Why did you hit him?” Evelina said angrily.

“Look.” Richard said, Samuel could only assume that he held up the book.

Samuel heard a gasp.

“A possession book manual!?” Evelina said “Our son found a possession book manual!?”

“Yes.” Richard said “Do you understand now?”

“Y-Yes…” Evelina said “But what are we going to do with it?”

Richard stayed silent for a bit.

“If anyone sees this book then we would be condemned, and we can’t let Samuel see it either.” He said “We would have to hide it…”

“Yes… Oh! I know where!” Evelina said

“Shhh!” Richard interjected “Don’t let him hear it.”

Suddenly Samuel couldn’t hear them anymore, but he seemed to understand the basic premise of what had happened. He understood that the book was very, very, bad. He also knew that it had something to do with possession, but he didn’t really understand what that was all about. With all these mysteries Samuel found a strong curiosity build up in his heart. He wanted to find the book, even if it meant going against his parents will. However, he simply had no idea where his parents would hide the book.

Unfortunately Samuel’s door was locked, and he still wasn’t really in the mood to go searching for a book. His only option was to sleep, and so he did.

In the morning Samuel found that his door was no longer locked. He walked out of his room and headed to the breakfast table. There his parents sat, with a tired expression on their faces. Samuel could only assume they spent the entire night hiding the book. He was still angry with his father, and he decided he wouldn’t speak to him until he apologised.

Samuel sat down at the table and began to eat, refusing to greet his parents.

Richard and Evelina looked at each other. Richard looked incredibly guilty, but he felt that he had to hit Samuel; otherwise he wouldn’t understand that the book was bad.

“Samuel.” Richard began to speak “Do not ever tell anyone about the book. I’m sorry that I hit you, but you must understand that having a book like that could lead to serious consequences.”

Samuel looked at his father. He was unsatisfied with his apology, but he knew he wasn’t going to get anything better.

He sighed and nodded in understanding.

Breakfast was long and rather awkward, so Samuel decided to take it as an opportunity to think about where his parents might have hid the book. He knew that if they spent all night on hiding it then it would definitely be hard to find. Samuel looked around the dining room for any clues. He focused his eyes as hard as he could on every area of the room. But all that led to were his eyes tearing up. He rubbed his eyes and began to look again, but this time things seemed to look a little different.

He noticed a small red fog, leading in a certain direction. Samuel’s eyes lit up. He didn’t know if his eyes were fooling him so he rubbed them again. He opened his eyes and saw that the fog had only gotten thicker. He excused himself from the table and began to follow the fog.

“What could he be up to now?” Evelina asked.

Samuel continued to follow the fog and he saw that it led into the basement. The basement was a dark and unwelcoming place. At least that was what his father told him. Samuel wasn’t allowed in the basement for one reason or another, and he never particularly wanted to go there either. But now it was different. The red fog led directly into the basement, and Samuel wasn’t going to let a bit of fear stop him.

He opened the hatch and found that it was unlocked. Probably because there was never any danger of Samuel wanting to go into the basement, since he was so afraid of it.

When Samuel entered he found that it wasn’t such a dark and horrible place at all. It was a cosy area, with lanterns still lit. There was a fancy wooden desk in the corner with an even fancier chair. There were several paintings on the walls. There was one with two people, a man and a woman, standing side by side. The man was tall, strong, and had a white beard. He resembled Samuel’s father a lot. The woman was slightly different. She was fairly short and stout, but her eyes were just like Richard’s.

“Are these… my grandparents?” Samuel asked himself.

He had never questioned why he hadn’t seen his grandparents before, but looking at them Samuel felt a little sad.

‘Are they still alive? Do they even know I exist?’ He asked himself.

He pushed these thoughts to the back of his mind and focused on finding the book.

He saw that there was a bookcase hidden in the darkest corner of the room. The red smoke seemed to encompass one book. He quickly grabbed it and looked at it, but he realised that it was not the same book. This one was clean and had a red cover, the one he had before was dirty and slightly blue. In addition to that this book had nothing to do with possession either, and seemed to be a romance novel.

However, the red smoke still seemed to point towards the book. Samuel thought back to his parents. This morning they seemed incredibly tired, and they definitely wouldn’t be tired if the book was simply hidden in the basement. He sighed, realising that the red smoke had led him astray.

He sat at the desk and looked at the painting of his grandparents. He realised that they didn’t have red eyes either. All of a sudden he felt a bit strange. He had always received strange looks from strangers. He knew he was different, and he didn’t like it. He felt so lost. Everybody always told him that he should be unique and be different, but he just wanted to be like everyone else. Normally one could relate to their parents or family, but even his parents had normal eyes. Samuel felt his eyes begin to tear up.

A single tear fell from his eyes onto the book in his hands. He looked at the wet spot on the book and began to see something strange. The tear seemed to dissolve the red cover. As the red began to dissolve he saw the cover of the old book emerge. He read the title out loud.

“Possessing Creatures: Basic Manual” He read.

He remembered his father saying the first two words. This was the book! But why was it different in the first place? Samuel was incredibly confused. He began to look inside the book, but realised that it was still the same romance novel. His eyes were still wet and a tear fell onto the pages of the book. Just like with the cover when his tears fell on the pages it revealed the pages from the old book. Samuel laughed in shock and happiness.

He looked at the book and he saw that it really was the exact same as before. He had no idea what had just happened, but he didn’t really care. He had his book. In excitement he began to read.

“The possession of creatures, both humanlike and other, requires a strong consciousness. It is important to understand that this possession does not mean to own a creature, but rather to truly possess it. To the point where it will be a part of you. In this manual one will learn how to split one’s own consciousness and control that split consciousness perfectly.”

Samuel’s head was spinning after reading that. He simply had no clue what the book was talking about.

‘What does it mean to possess something? What does consciousness even mean?’ He asked himself.

Samuel knew his limits. This book, even though it was supposed to be basic, was way above his ability. He simply did not understand anything the book was talking about.

He walked out of the basement with the book hidden underneath his shirt. Grace was going to be mad if he didn’t go out to play so he put the book in his room and began to walk towards the field.

On the way to the field Samuel began to think.

If I want to understand the book then I would need someone to help me. But it’s apparently really evil, so it’s probably a bad idea to just ask someone. If only there was someone who could help me with it.

He eventually made it to the field. He saw Grace sitting there, clearly annoyed that she had to wait so long. He looked in the distance and saw the forest. A dangerous idea appeared in his mind, but he laughed it off.

No. That would be insane.’ He thought to himself.

Chapter 2: His First Adventure

Samuel faced his fears and walked past the 100 meter point. This was the furthest he had ever been from his home while alone. He walked for a bit longer and found himself to be on the market street not too far from his home.

“Aah! Samuel! What are you doing out here on your own?” A woman said.

Samuel knew this woman. Her name was Laura and she was his mother’s best friend. Laura was wearing a large purple fur coat, which was rather strange since it was the middle of summer. She was an interesting character. Laura was not a pretty woman; she had a flat face and generally normal features. However, her personality was not normal in any way. She spoke as if she were an important lady, when in reality she actually came from a humble middle class family. She loved gossip and was known as the one person in the village that you should never tell a secret to. However, this uniqueness of her was probably the reason why Samuel’s mother and Laura were such good friends.

Samuel felt rather uncomfortable with Laura staring at him so intensely and could only muster a small whisper in reply.

“I.. I am on an adventure..” he said.

While Laura did make him feel extra uncomfortable Samuel tended to be rather shy when it came to speaking to anyone other than his parents.

“An adventure, huh…” Laura thought for a bit. Suddenly, her face lit up.

“I’ve got an idea!” She said “Why don’t you bring along Grace. She’d love to play with you!”

Underneath the large coat a small girl emerged. She looked to be around 6 years old. She shyly smiled at Samuel. However, her large brown eyes showed a hint of mischief.

When Samuel saw those eyes he shivered. Laura and her daughter had visited his house many times, and every time that Grace played with him he had gotten hurt in one way or another. Grace only spoke in single word sentences, however, even with this limit in her communication she always managed to make her intentions clear.

Before Samuel could say anything he saw that Grace had already grabbed his hand and Laura had disappeared.

“SWORD!” Grace exclaimed while looking at Samuel’s sword.

She grabbed it and immediately began to slice the air with it.

“…That was my birthday present.” Samuel said with tears in his eyes.

Grace looked at Samuel and seemed to feel guilty.

She looked at Samuel and held the sword out while shouting “SORRY!”

Samuel looked at her and shyly said “You can play with it too if you want…”

A big smile appeared across Grace’s face and she gave Samuel a big hug before pointing in the direction of a big field.

“FOLLOW!” She shouted.

Grace dragged Samuel along to the field, where they played by slicing the grass with the sword and having pretend fights. After a couple of hours they collapsed together on the grass. They were exhausted, but both were happy.

Grace suddenly stood up and pointed towards the ground.

“TOMORROW!” She said.

Samuel understood what she meant by that and nodded in response.

That day he walked home with a massive smile on his face. He completely forgot about the fact that he was so far away from home. Luckily he knew the way back. That day was not much of an adventure, but Samuel considered it to be training so that in the future he be able to have a real adventure.

The next day Grace and Samuel played together in the same field, and again the day after. They ended up playing together every single day. Due to Grace being so direct there were rarely arguments or misunderstandings. Samuel genuinely felt comfortable around her.

About a month later Samuel had his mind set. He wanted to go on an adventure, and if Grace went with him then he wouldn’t be afraid of anything.

Samuel was not the type of child to blindly attempt something. He had already created an intricate plan for what the adventure would be.

When he arrived at the field he saw that Grace was already there. Before she even had the chance to greet him Samuel began to speak.

“We are going on an adventure!” Samuel said loudly and assertively.

Grace was shocked by this behaviour, but seemed to be incredibly excited.

“WHERE!?” She asked

Samuel had a smug smile on his face as he revealed his plan.

“We will go to the forest!” He said.

“FOREST!” Grace said in wonder and slight fear.

The forest was the place where they were not supposed to go. It wasn’t necessarily dangerous, but a small child could easily get lost. Luckily Samuel had already prepared small pieces of red cloth, so that they could mark where they had been so they wouldn’t get lost.

Without another word they went on their way. Grace seemed incredibly happy and excited, even more so than usual.

When they reached the forest they both began to have second thoughts. The forest was dark and the trees seemed immensely high for the six year olds. However, Samuel would not give up now. He tied a red piece of cloth to a tree and walked in. Grace hesitated slightly and then walked in, following Samuel closely.

They walked slowly through the dark trees. They used a system where they would mark every fourth tree. However, Samuel had only brought so many cloths, and they both knew that they would eventually walk out.

After they were quite far in Grace pulled on Samuel’s sleeve. Samuel stopped and looked at her.

“Grace… We can’t stop until we’ve done something. This is an adventure!” Samuel said.

Grace still wasn’t very optimistic or happy. Suddenly, Samuel grabbed her hand and held it tight and dragged her along.

Grace was surprised by how dominant Samuel was, and she somehow felt a bit safer and ready to keep going.

The pair kept going deeper and deeper into the forest, and as they got deeper the forest got darker as well. Light had trouble piercing the dense leaves and Samuel realised that it was difficult to see even a couple meters in front of him, causing him to be rather nervous about if they would be able to find their way back. Because of this Samuel decided that they could only continue to move and hope for the best.

Suddenly, they saw a very bright light a couple meters away from them. They walked and saw that there was a small field. There were no trees in this small field, but there was a small lake. However, what was most surprising was the small log cabin in the middle of the field. The entire area was like a masterful scenic painting.

While entering the open area Samuel and Grace sighed in relief. Samuel breathed in the cool air and felt safe again as the light cascaded upon his skin. One never appreciates something until they have lost it, and Samuel felt this exact way about the bright area. Samuel decided to go towards the cabin. If he was lucky there would be someone that lived there, who might find it within themselves to help them get back to the town.

Grace and Samuel approached the cabin. Samuel knocked on the door, but alas there was no answer. After a couple more tries his curiosity got the better of him and he opened the door to look inside. The interior of the cabin was fairly quaint. There was only one small window, which provided all the light within the cabin, causing the rest to appear rather dark. There was a small fireplace, a table, and a bed. Samuel was disappointed by what was inside. The inside was very dusty and it was hard to breathe, leading Samuel to believe that no person lived there anymore. He made sure to inspect every corner of the cabin. Just as he was about to give up on searching for something he saw a book. It was in the darkest corner of a cabin. It was too dusty to make out the words on the front of the book, but nevertheless it enticed Samuel, and he quickly picked it up.

After they thoroughly searched the cabin Samuel left to join Grace, who was waiting outside. However, when he exited the cabin he saw not only Grace, but also a beautiful woman standing in front of her, talking to her. Samuel quickly went to see what was going on.

As he got closer he became even more shocked by the beauty of this woman. Even though he was young, and he did not really know anything about attraction between individuals he was still able to recognise how truly pleasing the woman’s appearance was.

The woman had long and straight black hair, blue eyes, and incredibly white skin. The contrast of these colours was fit incredibly well with the woman’s appearance. She had a small nose, large eyes, and thin alluring lips. The woman was wearing a small blue skirt, which perfectly showcased her wonderful curves.

“Oh, hello!” She said while looking at Samuel “You know it’s not nice to look through other people’s things?”

Samuel seemed a bit embarrassed, but then asked “Do you live here all by yourself?”

“Yes.” The beautiful woman responded.

Grace watched the beautiful woman talk to Samuel and seemed a bit scared of what she might do to him.

The beautiful woman approached Samuel, and seemed ready to scold him and take the book. However, when she got close Samuel’s eyes began to hurt incredibly much.

“AAAAGH!” Samuel screamed while holding his hands in front of his eyes.

“SAMUEL!?” Grace screamed in worry.

The beautiful woman also did not seem to understand what was happening, and she immediately backed off from the screaming child.

To Samuel it felt as if hundreds of ants were biting his naked eyes. He wanted to cry, but instead of tears a thick red liquid poured out. The second the liquid touched his hand he felt an excruciating pain and immediately removed his hands from his eyes. The liquid was like acid, and when it touched the ground it completely dissolved the grass.

The dripping continued for a couple seconds, and when it stopped so did the pain. When he looked up one could see that his eyes were even redder than before, like two shining rubies. His pupils seemed to pulsate.

When Samuel looked up he went to look at where the beautiful woman was, but he realised there was no longer a beautiful woman. Instead there was a zombie like creature in front of him. It was like a corpse of a human. The eyes were gone and the nose had already fallen off. Where there used to be teeth there was instead just a gaping black hole, which seemed to be capable of eating a soul.

When Samuel saw this in front of him he began to scream. Survival instincts kicked in and he grabbed Grace and began to run. He ran far into the forest.

Back in the field the now not so beautiful woman stood there shocked.

“Could he see my true appearance?” she asked herself.

Samuel and Grace were running through the forest trying to find a way out. Samuel’s eyes had luckily gone back to normal. Grace suddenly grabbed Samuel’s hand and pulled him back, causing him to fall over.

He looked at Grace in anger.

“What did you do that for?” He angrily asked

For the first time Grace spoke using proper sentences.

“Why did you run away?” She asked

Samuel looked at Grace in shock. How could she not have seen that evil creature?

“Didn’t you see!? She was like a witch or a zombie!” Samuel exclaimed.

Grace seemed confused. In her view the woman stayed beautiful the entire time, and it was only Samuel that had been strange in the situation.

“But she was so pretty.” She mumbled to herself.

Samuel didn’t say anything else and instead stood up and continued to walk. Eventually they found a red cloth and they managed to find their way out. When they exited the forest they realised that it had already turned night and they went they both left each other to go home.

The entire time Samuel couldn’t help but think about his eyes and what had happened. How did he see something that Grace couldn’t? He looked towards the book in his hand and wondered what it could be about. He felt his heart begin to beat again. Today he had successfully stolen a book from an evil creature. It was like a real adventure. It was almost cooler than python slayer Warwick. He realised that he sort of enjoyed the day. Even though it had been dangerous, painful, and terrifying he felt like he wanted to do it again.

With a smile on his face he ran home. He was hungry, and after a day like this he deserved a big meal.
