“Buzz—buzz——”
Zane swiped to silence his phone alarm and sat up.
He had only fallen asleep around two or three in the morning, and his dreams had been strange and exhausting. Even now, he felt drained.
His eyes gradually focused on the space in front of him. Right! The Dreamscape server is going live at 8:00 a.m.!
He glanced at his phone—7:55!?
No way. I had clearly set my alarm for 7:30. How had 25 minutes passed in the blink of an eye? Shiu hadn’t bothered to wake me either. No time to think about it—I need to hurry.
After a one-minute rush to wash up, he grabbed a carton of milk and a piece of bread, gulping them down in one go. Raising the milk to his mouth, “Gulp, gulp.”
“Ah, refreshing!”
Tossing the trash into the bin, he headed to the living room, only to find Shiu already lying on the sofa with his helmet on, fully prepared.
Damn it, this guy had stolen the best spot.
Well, it was Shiu’s place, so Zane had no choice but to sit on a nearby chair. Grabbing his own gaming helmet, he put it on.
…
The moment the helmet was on, it felt as if he had been transported to an entirely different world. Zane found himself walking along a dark corridor, with a dazzling point of light orbiting around him.
“What is this…” Just as he reached out to touch the light, it spoke.
“Hello, Player #16784235. Your iris has been successfully bound to your gaming helmet. The server launch will begin in 53 seconds. Please wait patiently until then,” a mechanical female voice announced.
At the same time, a finely crafted door appeared out of thin air ahead of him. Numbers glowed on the door: 53, 52, 51.
It seemed he had to wait until the countdown hit zero before proceeding.
Come to think of it, am I not supposed to choose my race soon?
“Hey, little sprite?” Zane looked toward the light and asked.
“Name confirmed as ‘Little Sprite.’ Hello, I’m your personal assistant, Little Sprite. How can I help you, Master?” The light transformed into a cute chibi figure.
“…” That name was way too random!
“Does Master have any questions?” Little Sprite asked again.
“Can I pick my race or set my name now?” Zane inquired.
Little Sprite shook its tiny head. “To prevent malicious ID hoarding, players may only register after the server launches.”
“Alright.” As they spoke, the countdown ticked to 20.
19, 18 … 2, 1, 0!
As soon as the number hit zero, the ornate door dissolved into particles, replaced by a blinding white light.
“Master, once you step through this door, you’ll be able to register,” Little Sprite informed him.
“Got it!” Zane replied. This was the golden moment of the server launch. If he could establish an early lead over most players, he could snowball that advantage in the later stages. And then… no time to daydream. Time to move!
Stepping through the door, the scene shifted, and Zane found himself in a new space.
An input box appeared before him. Without hesitation, Zane entered the ID he had prepared long ago: Zanny.
Ding!
System notification: This ID has already been registered.
What?! A question mark seemed to float above Zane’s head in confusion. How could people register so quickly??
Fine then—Emberveil.
Confirm!
Ding!
This ID has not been taken. Do you wish to register?
Yes!
Registration successful!
Next, please select your race.
Little Sprite announced, as three figures materialized before Zane. Each one represented a different race.
To the left stood the Beastmen, with bulging muscles and fiery orange skin. From a distance, they looked brimming with raw power. Although the figure resembled his own face, the wild and brutish orcish appearance… wasn’t exactly flattering. Hard pass.
In the middle stood the Human Race, appearing almost identical to his current form. The only difference was the attire—a formal set of armor, giving off a prepared-for-battle look that was admittedly quite dashing. Ahem, moving on to the Elves.
The Elves were characterized by their fair, almost flawless skin and a pair of sharp, upright ears. Combined with his sharp gaze, the elf projection exuded an elegant and carefree beauty.
Still, Zane decided to choose the Human Race. While the other two races had their unique traits, they didn’t quite feel… human.
Besides, Shiu had already mentioned he’d be playing a Human Mage. It would be better to match his choice; otherwise, if different races prevented them from teaming up to level early on, it would be a hassle.
“I choose the Human Race.”
A confirmation prompt appeared once again.
Confirm!
Suddenly, the projections of the three races vanished, replaced by a vast battlefield.
It was a chaotic melee of tens of thousands!
The Humans, Elves, and Beastmen each occupied distinct regions, with the Humans taking up the largest area—approximately one-fourth of the battlefield.
Opposing them was a dense, shadowy army of skeletons. The skeletal soldiers stood motionless like puppets, awaiting orders to attack. Above, dragons and griffins occasionally swooped through the sky, kicking up powerful gusts of wind.
The battlefield seemed ready to erupt at any moment.
The first to charge were the Human cavalry. Numbering about 5,000, each rider bore an insignia of a flaming sword on their shoulder, exuding an aura of bravery and fearlessness.
The skeleton army was no match for this sharp spearhead formation. The cavalry tore through them with relentless force, boosting the morale of the Human side. The resounding beat of war drums echoed across the battlefield, signaling the beginning of an all-out war.
The clash of blades, the exchange of magical elements, and the roaring flames spewed by dragons—all of it electrified the hearts of everyone present. In the sky, two glowing characters appeared: Dreamscape.
The scene before Zane shattered into cracks, then finally burst apart.
A pillar of white light engulfed Zane. As the light faded, his figure disappeared.
…
In reality.
The necklace resting on Zane’s chest emitted a faint glow, barely noticeable in the daylight.
…
As the light enveloped him, Zane felt his consciousness sink.
When he came to, he found himself surrounded by players who were continuously appearing around him. This must be the beginner village.
Not only that, but another entirely different scene appeared in his mind—the dark corridor from the initial login sequence.
What is this…? What is going on!? I have two perspectives!?
It felt completely natural. Instinctively, he tried to move from the perspective of the dark corridor. As he moved forward, his field of view expanded.
What the heck? What is this? Has my body been split in two?
He quickly checked his physical body in the beginner village. He crossed his arms, scratched his head, tapped his legs, and looked himself over. It seemed like he wasn’t missing any body parts.
“Is this guy a total noob?” a nearby player said, pointing at him.
“Tsk, probably his first MMORPG. Ignore him. Let’s leave the village and start leveling up ASAP!” another player replied.
“Yeah, let’s go! We can’t waste time here.”
“……” Zane felt speechless. He was just making sure he hadn’t lost an arm or a leg, that’s all.
