The name of our Sorceric Tool Studies teacher is Liens Coltraw.
He’s a former court sorcerer who was enamored with sorceric tools, leading to him quitting and becoming an academy teacher, or so they say. His name wasn’t mentioned in the Princess’ excellent individuals list, so he must not have left many achievements during his court sorcerer days. Perhaps it’s because he couldn’t achieve much as a court sorcerer that he walked the sorceric tools path instead.
Well, it’s all just groundless speculation on my part, and even if it turns out to be true, then that doesn’t really change anything.

Liens is a man in his forties with salt-and-pepper hair and glasses; he appears to have a cheerful, or rather laid-back, demeanor.

「As today is our first meeting, our discussion will start from the very basics of Sorceric Tool Studies. But first, does anyone here know the difference between an artificer without an Artificer Job and those that do?」

Liens gave the students a question, which was followed by several hands raised in the air.
I don’t know the answer, so I stayed a spectator. Though I probably wouldn’t raise my hand even if I did.

「First is that if you don’t have the Job, a special sorceric tool is needed when crafting a sorceric tool. Another is that there are sorceric tools that can only be made by those with the Job.」

The teacher nodded to the nameless student’s answer.

「Broadly speaking, those two are the most significant. A prominent example of an item only those with the Job can create is the magic pouch. While it also depends on the size, it’s said that only skilled artificers can craft them.
The sorceric tool protecting the royal throne can only be created by Artificer Job as well.」
『A sorceric tool being able to inhibit the use of sorcery is awfully weird, after all.』
『That’s true.』
『By the way, it sounds like Ain can’t make a magic pouch; is that alright?』

Ciel asked with a teasing tone. It might sound like sarcasm depending on how you take it, but I know that Ciel isn’t being malicious.
We’ve already considered the possibility; she’s asking me with confidence that I can probably make a magic pouch.
The faith she has in me feels quite heavy, but even if I can’t make one, I’m sure Ciel won’t mind it. Be that as it may, I already have some speculation about how it can be done. But I don’t even know how to craft a sorceric tool normally, so that’s where I’ll have to start.

『The discussion is about what can and can’t be done with the Job, so I think that there are ways around it.』
『You won’t tell me how?』
『It’ll be embarrassing if I end up being wrong.』
『Oh, but I want to see Ain embarrassed, though?』
『I don’t want to be embarrassed with this.』
『*With this*, huh.』

Ciel was somewhat chipper, but I know what she’s implying. It was as if I admitted that it’s fine to embarrass me through other things.
Still, if that can make Ciel happy, then I can endure a little embarrassment. Not that I plan on ever feigning embarrassment.
Nonetheless, embarrassing things are embarrassing, so I would appreciate it if Ciel refrained from such acts.

「For those that don’t have the Artificer Job, you will need to use this sorceric quill pen.」

He then presented what, at first glance, appears to be a completely normal quill pen. If I have to comment on it, the quill it’s crafted from is bizarrely high quality.
But this object is special. So special that I don’t even know if it’s right to call such a thing a sorceric tool.

「When utilizing this sorceric tool, it automatically absorbs your magic power and changes it into ink. And without a magic circle written by this ink, you can’t craft a sorceric tool. Normally, you would need to purchase this from a temple or the church, but you will be lent one while you are here in this academy, so you don’t need to worry about not owning one. You will have to return it by the end of our course, so make sure not to damage or lose it.」
『It can be bought from the church?』
『It’s probably made using some connection to the divine, you see.』
『Oh, is that so?』
『That’s how it feels, at least.』

While I can’t really give a proper explanation, it has some indescribable divine-ish quality to it.
Considering this world’s structure, defeating monsters and expending many magic cores is most preferable, so I’m confident that the Creator God actively endorses the production and use of sorceric tools, the very symbol of magic core consumption.

「I don’t have the Artificer Job, you see. This pen has served me very well and has been a beacon of inspiration for me. In my first attempts at making sorceric tools, I didn’t know of this pen’s existence.
I tried to learn by imitation, but I couldn’t figure out what was wrong with my handiwork. After thorough research and experiments, I finally came to know of this pen, but by then, I was cast as a failure of a court sorcerer. Those dunces who can’t understand the wonders of sorceric tools—」
「Teacher! Can we return to the main topic first?」

As Liens started speaking faster and faster, a student from the front called his attention.
I assumed he had a laid-back personality, but it appears that he’s a complete sorceric tool geek. He’s not even an Artificer, yet he’s so obsessed to the point that he apparently got fired from being a court sorcerer; he could probably exhaust a whole hour just talking about sorceric tools if prompted.
He’s so passionate about it, I suspect that he could probably match or outlast Carol and Mia’s sorcery tangents.
Also, during his speed-rambling, he vaguely gave off mad scientist vibes.

*Why is someone like him a teacher?* I thought, but perhaps there simply aren’t many teachers who can teach about sorceric tools.

Seemingly coming to his senses, Liens forced out a cough and then started writing on the board.

「In this basic-level course, I will require all of you to craft and present any one simple sorceric tool, so while it’s still early, please start thinking about what you would like to create. Once you’ve decided on that, inform me what you would like to submit so—」

And so, with the occasional derailment from Liens, the Sorceric Tool class was able to reach its end.

And that ends this chapter! While we don’t have new student characters introduced today, we do have a new addition to our beloved magic geeks: Liens, the guy who apparently got fired for being too obsessed with sorceric tools!

I love how the guy went on a tangent for a moment, and the random lore drop that either history or math teachers usually do for some reason, lol. Meanwhile, Ciel’s teasing streak never ends, lol. Ain, reluctant concessions aren’t how you make this stop Ain, you’ll only make her think of more creative ways to persuade/tease you.

Now then, I hope you enjoyed this chapter. Please feel free to comment. Stay healthy, stay safe, and have a nice day~!
