She came to answer the third question? Monobe’s third question was probably about what happens after death. I was curious too, but if asking it now would lead to disaster, I might lose my motivation. I didn’t think that alone would cause the plan to fail, but it would raise the risk, even by just a few percent.
And I couldn’t afford to treat a few percent lightly. When you only had one chance and no way out if you failed, even the smallest risk felt terrifying. I pondered whether I should use Allure on her, but then reasoned that it probably wouldn’t work on God’s gofer. Rather, it could lead her to change her mind.
On the other hand, if she was lying, at the very least, anything she said about the afterlife would be false anyway. In that case, we were just wasting our time.
“But first, would you show us some proof that you’re God’s messenger?”
I threw my dice with that question. If she were genuine and meant us no harm, she could be willing to share something… But if she was the real thing, she might kill us for disrespecting her.
Even so, it seemed worth it to find out whether the information we got from her was real or fake.
“I’m not obliged to show you, but I will do so nonetheless. See for yourself. You can look at me with your skills.”
“I’ll take you up on that offer.”
I tried to use Allure on her, but there was no sign it had worked. The other skill I had wasn’t suited for confirming something like this. As I was thinking that, I heard a rumbling sound.
When I looked to see what the noise was, I saw Monobe hitting God’s messenger with a book.
(What are you doing?! Have you gone crazy?! Is this so-called messenger defective somehow?)
The self-proclaimed messenger rubbed the spot where she’d been struck, still smiling as if it hadn’t affected her at all.
“I didn’t think you’d hit me out of the blue like that.”
“You were the one who said I could use my skills, and this was the only skill I could use right now.”
“Yes, yes. I know. If I had wanted to dodge, I would have. Also, Megi, I can see you shivering over there. You don’t need to worry. I won’t get mad. But please, do try and confirm I’m God’s gofer.”
She was right. This girl had allowed us to use our skills so that we could confirm she was God’s messenger. If nothing came of that, it wouldn’t mean anything. But now, all I knew for sure was that this girl was incredibly strong and that she had a skill similar to Appraisal.
We couldn’t defeat her, at least not on our own. So we had no choice but to hear what she had to say.
“It seems you’ve finally realized it. Well, it’s not bad news. It has to do with what will happen to you after you die in the collapse.”
The girl began speaking again before I could respond, as if she hadn’t been paying attention to anything we were saying.
“First, let me tell you something you might already be aware of. I can see that your status hasn’t increased much despite being heroes, so I can only assume that you already know that the stronger you become, the more your lifespan shortens.”
What she said was right, but now I felt like it would’ve been better to have become a bit stronger. What good was a person’s lifespan when the world was about to collapse? The collapse of the world was like the end of a lifetime. If that was the case, then I wanted to be strong enough to move freely, to act.
“If you die in the collapse of the world, you will be given a choice of what to do afterwards.”
“A choice?”
“You can die, go to a new world that will be created after this one is destroyed, return to your original world, or even go to a completely different one. Think of it as choosing between reincarnation and transmigration. In any case, your lifespan will also be restored.”
“Wait! How did it come to this?”
“Don’t you like it?”
The girl tilted her head. It wasn’t about whether I liked it or not; it was just overwhelming to be suddenly presented with such a choice.
If her story was true, then I was honestly glad. But still, I had to ask her why she was helping us.
“Why are you doing this? There shouldn’t be any merit in helping us?
Monobe got the jump on me, so I just listened quietly. After thinking for a bit, the girl proceeded to answer him.
“There is no merit. The one who’ll be helping you isn’t me, but God himself, and he too has no merit for doing so. However, you aren’t originally the people of this world. In other words, you are simply people who ended up being dragged into this collapsing world. So you could say that we just felt like helping you.”
“If that’s the case, will you help the other heroes as well?”
“Just a part of them. I will help a total of four, with you two included in that number.”
The girl said with a completely straight face. I really didn’t know if we could trust her.
I would’ve understood if she said she wanted to help all the heroes. But only four? Why just them? Then again, I couldn’t really complain, if I were asked, I probably wouldn’t help all of them either.
The girl looked at us, waiting for a response. I wanted to ask her why she would only help four, but it was unlikely that she would answer. Besides,
“Who are the other two?”
“Is that information important to you?”
“My choice will change depending on whether the people who bullied me in my previous world are saved.”
“I see. That’s a valid point.”
The girl said, clapping her hands.
(Did I persuade God’s messenger? What if she is a fake?)
I hesitated for a bit but quickly dismissed the idea.
“The other two are Fumitsuki and Fujiwara.”
The moment she said those names, I saw Monobe’s eyes light up, as if he’d managed to connect the dots.
