How did this happen? The invasion of Nigel had been progressing smoothly, until disaster struck Fraus. It was the kind of catastrophe you’d only read about in history books. According to the reports, some kind of anomaly had occurred across the entire continent, not just in Fraus.
The most lasting damage was the massive cracks that tore through the earth of Fraus. The ground had split open as if something immense hovered over the royal capital, and the barrier that once separated the noble and commoner sectors had ceased to function.
Though the same phenomenon had affected other regions, Fraus was the one showing visible signs of weakness, and as a result, the war with the Nigel Kingdom came to a sudden halt. I wasn’t particularly pleased about that. We needed to seize Nigel’s spirit before it was too late.
Apparently, those unaware of the full situation had requested a truce. I was told they’d been pressured into it, but the soldiers’ morale had already taken a deep dive. The heroes were here, but that alone wasn’t enough.
Fortunately, many knights still remained in the kingdom. Although troubling developments were unfolding, it wasn’t yet at a critical point. Given the circumstances, I decided it would be better for me to depart. There wasn’t much I could do inside the castle at that moment.
“I have an audience with His Majesty. Please arrange the location at once.”
“Understood.”
I gave the order to an attendant, someone other than Soter, and asked them to leave us alone.
“Are you heading to the battlefield?”
“Considering the spirit, this is the best course of action. There are other concerning developments I’d like to address, but I can’t afford to lose focus. If we fail to secure a spirit, our kingdom is finished. My father and brother are both here, so I’m not concerned about leaving the castle.”
“You cannot!”
I was startled by Soter’s sudden outburst. Her voice was loud and unusually emotional. I could see the genuine worry in her eyes.
“Thank you, Soter. But I am royalty. I do not fear dying for my kingdom. Besides, Fraus has the advantage. I won’t fall so easily.”
Though I didn’t value my life highly, I had no intention of dying. If death came for me, it would only be after I ensured a future for Fraus. I had sworn to survive until the war with Nigel was resolved.
“Then I will come with you.”
“That’s reassuring. But first, I must ask Father for his permission.”
I turned my attention to the documents before me, already thinking through how I might convince him.

“So, Topersion, my daughter. What is it that you wish to speak about?”
“I would like to go to the battlefield against Nigel. I intend to raise the morale of our troops.”
“You will not.”
My father’s expression contorted with disapproval as he gave his firm rejection. It didn’t seem fitting for the king of a nation to make such a face, but that only showed how deeply he loved me. Even so, this was a matter of national urgency. If he couldn’t prioritize the kingdom over me, then he wasn’t fit to be king.
“Your Majesty. Victory against Nigel is the bare minimum required to keep Fraus functioning. Even if you do not understand all the details, surely you recognize the impact a royal presence has on morale. If I do not go now, our demoralized troops may be overwhelmed. We could lose the spirit… and with it, Fraus itself. Please reconsider.”
Then, I bowed my head. While he was my father, he was still the king. Protocol had to be respected. To ignore it would damage the dignity of the royal family. I never planned to die, but people worried too much.
“Very well. I understand. I’ll allow it. But promise me, you must come back safely.”
“You too, Your Majesty. There is unrest within the castle. Please remain cautious.”
“It is nothing of concern. We still have soldiers. If anything happens, we will handle it.”
“In that case, I’ll take my leave.”
I bowed and exited the audience chamber. With the decision made, I needed to depart as soon as possible. The longer the offensive against Nigel was delayed, the more chaos would spread through Fraus.
“Soter, I’ve received permission.”
“I am ready to leave at any time. Though I assume we won’t depart immediately?”
“Correct. Thank you, Soter. We’ll need to plan carefully. Still, I intend to leave in three days.”
“As you wish.”
Over the next three days, I completed all the necessary preparations. Once everything was ready, I departed for the front lines against the Nigel Kingdom.
