I was having a hard time deciding on lunch, but then I saw they had egg sandwiches, so I went with that. To be precise, it was part of a set of three sandwiches.
Though I call it a sandwich, it wasn’t the typical kind made with sliced bread. Instead, the fillings were tucked between English muffin-like buns.

Price-wise, it’s a bit pricier than the average. Comparing this to the food outside of the academy, it’s like a slightly expensive lunch. Unlike yesterday, since it’s in the middle of lunchtime, there are a lot of people, and it’s hard to find a seat.
I used a full power detection to find unoccupied seats and marched straight ahead.

『That’s a luxurious way of using magic.』
『I see it more as a convenient way of using magic.』
『Fair point. Would I be able to do the same in the future?』
『If you solely focus on practicing detection, you could probably even do it immediately, I think?』

Ciel uses detection to maneuver herself advantageously during battles, while I generally use it for enemy detection. Because of that, Ciel doesn’t really need to increase her detection range. And perhaps recognizing that as well, she doesn’t put as much effort into expanding it as I do.
This is why I answered the way I did, to which Ciel responded with a giggle, 『It’s better to leave it to Ain.』

『By the way, Ain, do you like sandwiches?』
『I don’t particularly hate them; I just felt like eating some right now. I’m craving eggs.』
『Eggs are delicious, after all.』
『In my old world, we even ate eggs raw.』
『Eggs can be eaten raw?』
『It’s best not to do that. You’ll likely upset your stomach.』

Even in my old world, people are advised against eating raw eggs outside of Japan. I recall that it’s only edible in Japan because of rigorous quality control.
Generally, it’s considered crazy to eat eggs raw. The consensus is more like, It’s amazing these guys eat eggs raw! or something along those lines.
I don’t really want to eat raw eggs now either.

『And you ate it like that, Ain?』
『Because it was fine to do where I live. There were people who would even detoxify poisonous food or find under which condition deadly food could be eaten safely, you see.』
『Now I’m getting curious. I’d love to visit there at least once.』

It’s not limited to Japan: if you go around the world, you’d probably see many delicious and weird foods.
I don’t plan on recreating my old world’s food here. My cooking was basically just slapping random things together since I live alone, so I don’t think I can recreate it anyway.

There are four open seats in total. All four of them are positioned by the aisle, so we got an aisle seat.
Naturally, the individual following us necessarily has to sit on one of them. But I have no idea why she’s sitting right in front of me.
Well, she’s basically a stranger, so I’ll ignore her. I’ll only respond if she initiates.

『The food here really is delicious.』
『It’s tasty for its price, isn’t it? They’re simple but seem to be made with care.』
『Also, it’s interesting how they flavor their food slightly differently compared to Central.』
『That’s true. It’s small things like these that display a country’s unique character.』

Personally, I prefer Central’s flavors, but this is delicious in its own way.
How do I describe it? Central’s flavors are deep, while the flavors here are dense. It’s hard to explain.

『By the way, what’s going on with the girl in front of us? She seems focused on eating, but she hasn’t eaten much of her food.』

Just as she said, the mysterious girl is looking at her plate intently while taking small bites of her food. Unlike Palra, she’s like a small animal.

『This is just a wild guess, but perhaps she simply isn’t familiar with how the cafeteria works?』
『Is that so? If that’s true, that’s somewhat adorable. It’s not the same as with Ain, though; is adorable the right word?』
『It should be, I guess?』

It’s not as if the word ‘adorable’ was made just to describe me, so it’s not an issue to use it on other people. Though since Ciel’s ‘adorable’ has been only directed towards me and the spirits up until now, I do feel a bit jealous hearing her use it on someone else. Just a bit.

As this went through my mind, I suddenly noticed that Ciel was giggling.

『Ain is still the most adorable, you know?』
『That’s… Thank you.』

I feel like an open book; it’s embarrassing. As I was thinking of how to change the topic, I detected a potentially bothersome individual—Alcrei—heading here.
He’s too far away to see us, but examining his route, there are barely any open seats, so he’s definitely going to reach our location.
It doesn’t seem like he’s noticed us yet, so we can probably make it if we leave now.

『Alcrei is heading towards our general direction; let’s move.』
『This Alcrei is one of our classmates, right?』
『He’s the boy whose thunder sorcery ran out of control during the entrance exam.』
『I remember now. Yeah, he’s going to be bothersome.』

There’s still one sandwich left, but I’ve eaten enough to fuel me for the afternoon, so I shoved it into our magic pouch to eat at a later time.
Standing up, I then hide my white hair under my robe to at least disguise its length before carrying my dishes for returning. It seems like the girl in front really doesn’t have any particular business with me, as she just continued eating without paying much attention. Seeing her only halfway through her meal, I could barely hold back a smile.

I could leave without saying anything, but since she did catch Ciel’s interest, I warned her, 「A troublesome person is on the way,」 before walking away.
She quivered upon hearing my voice but then immediately turned to the entrance and had her eyes wide in surprise.
After that, she carried her tableware in a rush and followed after me.

Just as Alcrei couldn’t see us from here, she shouldn’t be able to see Alcrei as well, so it must be her eyes that allowed her to notice something amiss.
Truly convenient eyes she has. Jobs come in a lot of varieties, and I believe hers to be special even among others, but who knows?

And that ends this update! Our girls (+1) were enjoying food in the cafeteria, but it seems like fate has something to say about that.

As with other previous occasions, I appreciate Ain for being so real about her cooking. Some may say cooking is a science, but cooking for yourself is generally LARPing as an apocalypse survivor making do with whatever’s there in pantry. Or as a witch attempting to concoct a new sort of potion if you’re cooking soup. Meanwhile, our little seatmate, for some reason, continues being our girls’ seatmate even in the cafeteria, and is paradoxically gorging herself with teeny tiny bites. Game is game; even Ciel considers her adorable, lol. Meanwhile, Alcrei appears once again like a random monster encounter. Talk about luck.

Now then, I hope you enjoyed this chapter. Please feel free to comment. Stay healthy, stay safe, and have a nice day~!
