Under the pale moonlight, a silver-armored woman sprinted through the ruins, locked in a deadly chase with the relentless Death Knight at her heels. In her hands, a jade-green longbow flashed with movement as she let arrow after arrow fly.

Creak—

The bowstring stretched to its limit, launching a venom-tipped arrow with deadly precision.

“Heh.” The Death Knight snorted coldly. With a sharp tug on the reins, his skeletal steed veered right. The arrow grazed his neck, but was soon engulfed by his ghostly green flame, disintegrating mid-flight without a trace.

Normal attacks were nearly useless, this boss could predict her trajectory. Still, she showed no signs of panic. The shots were just to buy time. Fighting the Death Knight in open terrain was suicidal.

Now, surrounded by crumbling buildings, a small smile played on Windblossom’s lips. This… this was her domain. As a Ranger, she belonged to the Dexterity class, somewhere between Archer and Assassin, wielding a versatile range of weapons: bows, daggers, swords, and blades.

Seeing the Death Knight closing in, Windblossom didn’t hesitate. She darted into one of the half-collapsed houses.

As expected, there were monsters inside.

Zombie
Grade Epic
Level 23
HP 5,000
Attack 89–103
Physical Defense 55
Magical Defense 33
Skills Corrode, Bite, Corpse Poison
Description A low-tier undead creature. Once an ordinary villager, now corrupted and reanimated by necrotic forces. It attacks humans mindlessly—don’t let your guard down, or the next zombie might be you…

The stats were intimidating, but zombies moved painfully slow. Compared to ghouls, they were in a completely different class. Windblossom easily sidestepped its clumsy bite.

Boom!!!

The Death Knight didn’t bother navigating the doorway, he simply crashed through it with brute force. The impact sent furniture flying and even launched the zombie across the room.

The zombie’s HP sharply dropped, leaving only 1,500 remaining. The Death Knight showed no concern for friendly fire.

The dazed zombie staggered back to its feet, continuing to shamble toward Windblossom.

Meanwhile, the Death Knight raised his sword toward her. A guttural voice echoed from beneath his helm. “Annoying little rat… you have nowhere left to run.” A terrifying concentration of dark energy swirled at the tip of his blade. If she took that hit head-on, there’d be no chance of survival.

Healing Arrow!

Of course, Windblossom didn’t just stand there. Twilight energy gathered around her next shot. Though a healing skill, it was imbued with Light, which directly repelled the Death Knight’s darkness. Far more effective than a regular strike.

Light and shadow collided—then—

Boom!!!

A torrent of explosive energy erupted, consuming everything in its wake.

The Death Knight, caught at the blast’s core, clutched his chest and nearly toppled from his mount. His health dropped to below 10%. All nearby zombies disintegrated instantly, turned to ash by the radiant burst.

The Ranger boosted her speed with Wind Dance, stowed her bow and drew a crimson rapier. In half a second, she slashed the battered wall with blistering speed, creating an exit! But… she was still too slow.

No surprise, the attack finished her off. Windblossom vanished in a flash of white light, forcefully returned to Wynwater City.

And at that moment, the level rankings updated. Starry and Zane reclaimed the top two spots.

By the time Zane sensed something was wrong, he was already sprinting toward it. Whatever had happened, they needed to assess the situation first. Starry followed closely beside, ready to coordinate.

The other three saw them rush off and quickly followed.

Midway there, at roughly the eleven o’clock direction, a terrifying shockwave of energy suddenly erupted.

Fia murmured, “How could this be…?”

’Who the hell dropped a nuke here?’ Zane cursed under his breath.

They were still low-level players, yet someone managed to cause a full-on energy explosion. How was anyone else supposed to keep playing after that? Zane stared at the cluster of buildings that had been completely obliterated and couldn’t help grumbling internally.

By the time they arrived, only a pitch-black figure remained, along with his undead steed. Zane pulled up the status window.

Death Knight Anruta (Boss)
Grade Epic
Level 25
HP 35,000
Attack 156–215
Physical Defense 82
Magic Defense 63
Skills Death Coil, Darkcleave, Charge
Description A newly risen Death Knight who has unexpectedly gained mastery over dark powers.

35,000 HP?! This boss was completely overtuned! His attack power exceeded 200, and his defense wasn’t low either. Not to mention, every one of those skills sounded like a nightmare to deal with.

But… after that energy shockwave, Anruta’s HP had been reduced to just 2,549. The player previously displayed on the map had vanished too. Did they self-destruct? Whatever had happened, this was the perfect chance to finish off the boss!

Just as Zane prepared to launch an attack while the boss was still staggered—

“Don’t kill him!” Fia, who had caught up, suddenly cried out in panic.

Zane paused, startled.

At that moment, the fire in Anruta’s eye sockets flared to life.

“…It’s you?” Anruta’s voice was flat, devoid of emotion.

+5000

‘Oh, come on! You can’t just heal yourself like that! Damn it… At this rate, he’d fully recover!’

“Invoke: Vines!” Zane cast quickly. Branches shot upward, ready to bind the knight, only to be instantly incinerated by greenish-black flames.

+5000

The skill’s crowd control effect had been neutralized!

“Anru… please…” Fia’s voice trembled, part plea, part lament. “Please, listen to your sister. Stop this madness… please…”

‘Wait. Is this going to turn into a scripted scene?’

“There’s no turning back,” Anruta said simply. Then he turned toward the adventurer who had dared attack him earlier. He narrowed his eyes. “A Wishkeeper…? No matter. A human, nonetheless.”

His regeneration finally stopped at 17,549 HP.

“You’ll die here, along with that rat from earlier.”

Darkcleave!

Terrifying dark energy gathered around his sword. Every bruise Zane had taken in the past three days told him the same thing: this was not something to take head-on.

He had been corroded to death by slimes, launched skyward by boars, smashed across boulders by skeleton warriors. His long resume of aerial deaths taught him one thing: take a hit like this, and he wouldn’t just fly! He might be buried.

Thousand Flash Steps!

Before Darkcleave could finish charging, Starry darted in first, her footwork weaving in a graceful glide to Anruta’s flank.

The skeletal warhorse let out a glare, lifting its skull. A swirling orb of black energy began forming in its jaws.

‘You’ve gotta be kidding. Even the mount has skills? This thing is practically a Unique-tier boss already! Whatever. Strike first, ask questions later.’

Icy Moon Slash!

-451

Icy frost surged along the blade, attempting to engulf both knight and steed. Just as the chill crept up toward their heads, the eerie green flame flared violently, and the frost was instantly vaporized.

Even the slowing effect from the Icecold Ring had failed.

‘Damn. The interrupt failed.’

Anruta’s gaze turned sharp. Darkcleave crashed forth with devastating momentum!

‘Too fast! Bone Shield—block it!’

A towering spectral wall of white bone materialized in front of Zane.

Crack!

-3452

The shield was cleaved clean in two! What the hell kind of damage was that?!
