At the very least, humanity undoubtedly descended from their generation, so I can understand them having the urge to help as much as they can. While it may not be the case at present time, they must have been more proactive with helping in the past.
That is greatly different from the Creator God’s stance, but since the Creator God has allowed it, it doesn’t seem like they are particularly going against the Creator God’s wishes.
「What is the difference between the taboos you’ve established and theirs?」
「I guess, from humanity’s perspective, only those that get hit by divine punishment are mine.」
「So Goddess Alsharohs and the other gods’ taboos are less breaking an established rule and more disobeying their requests?」
「There aren’t any specific penalties for breaking theirs. Being viewed badly by a higher-order being can be considered a penalty, but it’s not an issue for those that don’t care.」
No matter how many taboos you commit, if those aren’t the taboos established by the Creator God, you probably won’t die. Well, I don’t intend to actively commit taboos to begin with, and I don’t even know the taboos of Alsharohs and the other gods.
「Well, it’s reduced to a formality at this point. If you’re curious, you could ask Alsharohs about it herself… but she’s currently sulking, so I don’t know if she’ll hear you out.」
「Ah, I knew it… the one who was sulking really was Goddess Alsharohs.」
Since Alsharohs is the only one who gives oracles, she must have been the one to speak about the taboos. And I suspect that the reason she’s sulking is due to people repeatedly committing taboos.
「About that, she actually isn’t the only one giving out oracles.」
「Is that so?」
「She simply does it in far greater frequency and the church doesn’t catch every instance of oracles happening, which is why it appears that way.」
Of course, it’s also possible the church deliberately kept some of the oracles it discovered out of public view. This is this, that is that. The church―it might be more proper to call it the church of Asharohs―doesn’t openly reject the existence of other gods, but it may still take steps to ensure Alsharohs appears preeminent.
「Can’t they give out divine punishments?」
「The most they can intervene with the surface is by giving oracles, minor divine protections… and unleashing large-scale disasters capable of wiping out entire cities. I don’t allow the last one, so they probably won’t.」
「So they really can’t do much intervention?」
「At the end of the day, divine power is, well, powerful. And broad-sweeping. There would be significant consequences if this world accidentally gets destroyed, so I’ve exhaustively told them not to intervene too much.
Though I did practically give them the Job system in exchange.」
In exchange for not allowing them to directly intervene, they were given the Job system―does that mean that the gods have some level of influence on what Jobs would be granted to people? Rispelgia has proved that Jobs have a connection to divine power, so maybe it also goes both ways.
「I vaguely recall them giving Jobs like Saintess and Divine Envoy to mortals they favor. But I specifically forbid them from giving bad Jobs to those they don’t like.」
「If that was possible, it could be used to manipulate humanity as a whole. People could be threatened with bad Jobs for not worshiping them.」
「In the first place, they can’t really change the Jobs of mortals that frequently. Gods like Tyrnorus have their individual right to specify Jobs reserved for emergencies, you see.」
「Those are Jobs for like the Hero, right?」
「Exactly. It’s so they can choose an individual to resolve possible nation destroying threats in the future.」
「So you’re not intervening in those?」
「It’s not really in my interest. Unless a certain threshold is reached, it’s all theirs to handle.」
If, hypothetically, some major power were to aim for world conquest and start a great war, it probably wouldn’t matter to the Creator God. Acolytes praying for monsters to stop spawning due to their danger would probably be more troublesome for her.
Unlike animals, monsters can spawn even in wastelands, so if the surface was burned to ruin, this world would still be capable of serving its function.
「I learned a lot about taboos. By the way, do you know anything about the individual attempting to commit a taboo in the academy?」
「All I know is that they’re in the academy you’re in.」
「They are actually in the academy, right?」
「At the very least, their presence is near you whenever you’re inside the academy. That’s all I know, and since they’ll just get automatically eliminated after committing the taboo, I don’t really mind if you ignore them.」
「I suppose it feels that way from your perspective.」
Mother Fii used this as a reason to send us out, but it didn’t particularly seem like she needed us to resolve it. It probably was just a convenient reason to have us attend the academy. After all, without it, we wouldn’t really have any reason to go out of the way to attend school.
So for this matter, I guess we could just find the suspect to pass time and ask for their reasons.
「But let’s see. While it is merely a tiny tiny bud that could threaten the world, if you can resolve this issue in a way that the divine punishment doesn’t occur, I’ll grant a single wish of yours. Though as with before, there’s a limit to what I can grant.」
「Are you sure?」
「Despite appearances, I am a god who has observed many mortals, you know?」
I suppose she means that she has seen people losing motivation after losing their goals. While it’s true that I am a bit disappointed about my objective being reduced to a simple pastime, I’m surprised that she’s motivating us like this. There must be a catch―or so I assume, but I don’t think there’s really any reason for the Creator God to be scheming against me.
「Oh, that’s right. If the divine punishment does end up occurring, it’s impossible for you to block it no matter what. Keep this in mind, alright? At worst, you might end up dying, too.」
「―Understood.」
My power doesn’t even measure to the divine punishment―to the Creator God’s strength. I’m already aware of how wide our power gap is, but since she intentionally mentioned it, then she must think that there’s a chance that I’d protect the suspect.
Nonetheless, excluding Ciel, the people I would personally consider protecting would be Palra, Belltina, and maybe the princess. Even if it ends up being one of them, I’m unlikely to risk my life protecting them. Though now that I said that, this honestly applies to everyone except Ciel.
「Now then, shouldn’t it be about time for you to return?」
「That’s true. I’d rather not be away from Ciel’s side for too long.」
「Not even an hour has passed since you’ve arrived here, but things have gotten a bit interesting on her end; I’ll be enjoying it from here.」
For now, I’ve asked everything I wanted to know, so I obediently returned as suggested, but the Creator God’s last words were pretty ominous. *What does that*―before I could finish my thought, I returned to Ciel’s side.
And that ends this chapter! Ain had a quite fruitful discussion with the Creator God, but then we got an ominous little drop at the end, lol. Well, considering how the Creator God seemed amused, it shouldn’t be a worrying development.
For the first half, our cast continued the exposition on the true purpose of this world: it was basically meant as a recycling area for all the miasma from other worlds. Which explains why the Creator God and Fii (basically her direct divine servant) are so detached from humanity. Humans weren’t meant to exist here to begin with, and their absence wouldn’t affect this world’s main purpose. I do like how spirits were born to be terraformers keeping the world inhabitable for the new residents; it explains the natural closeness spirits have to nature, and how boned a nation would be if they happen to displease spirits.
For this part, we also got a more in-depth explanation of how the pantheon of this world is arranged. The Creator God is basically an extra-dimensional outer god that is using a lesser avatar to interact with this world, while the others are former mortal gods of humanity who ascended thanks to their deeds and hero/ancestral worship. It is curious how Alsharohs became the god most worshiped, but a big part of it may be due to her status as a Goddess of Love: her teachings encourage helping people, so it’s likely that her believers ended up becoming a highly organized civic organization that blew up into the Alsharohs church of current time. It’s also nice how these gods can basically choose their champion through the Job system, with some even withholding their right for civilization enders, lol.
Lastly, the warning Ain got is really unsettling, since as Ain said, the Creator God must think that there’s a chance that Ain *would* attempt to protect the taboo attemptee. For the next chapter, let’s see what life had it store for Ciel while Ain wasn’t around.
Now then, I hope you enjoyed this chapter. Please feel free to comment. Stay healthy, stay safe, and have a nice day~!
