『Of course, I’ll make sure to come out to play with the spirits and whenever necessary.』
「That’s not what I mean, you know?」
As Ciel puffed her cheeks in displeasure, I folded and answered, 『I know.』
I personally want Ciel to have a longer time in control, but that doesn’t seem to be easy to achieve.
I wouldn’t be against completely staying in the background, but that would probably have a negative effect on Ciel as well.
With no other choice, I proposed an alternative.
『We’ll have to do some observations first, but why don’t we rotate which of us will be mainly active by the day?』
「Like, if Ain is out today, then I should be out tomorrow?」
『That’s right. During class hours, there may be times when it might be best to switch, so this will be our arrangement outside of class time.』
「That sounds good. As expected of Ain.」
Ciel praised me, but she quickly retorted, 「But that was mean.」
Then she immediately softened her expression.
I guess despite understanding my intent, she just wanted to put her feelings into words.
I want to respect Ciel’s time as much as possible, while Ciel wishes to give that same time to me. With our clash of opinions, Ciel likely had some reluctance in accepting my suggestion.
At the same time, it does make me happy to see her caring so much about me.
「Speaking of playing with spirits, how are you going to meet with the spirits from here on?
I think it’ll be a bit troublesome to leave the dorm at night, you know?」
『Eventually, we’d likely have to travel by air from the window to outside the city walls. Remaining undiscovered will likely be the difficult part…』
「I just hope we can avoid attracting attention.」
『With the attention-drawing nature of our Jobs, it’s outside our hands.』
Both Song and Dance Princess Jobs are inevitably eye-catching when utilized.
It’s in the very nature of those Jobs; there’s nothing we can do about it.
When utilizing our Jobs, we become hopelessly ill-suited for covert activities.
With the use of barriers and detection, we could probably do some stealth action, but in that case, we’d have to navigate around with Ciel’s non-enhanced physicality.
We might be able to use sorcery to resolve that dilemma, but thinking about it, the mysterious upperclassman is also on this floor.
If we cast spells carelessly, we might get discovered instead.
Though the same applies if we try to travel by air. Hmm… It would be nice if there were a good spot nearby.
『Let’s put the issue of the spirits aside for now. It’s still a while until the next gathering.』
「If you say so, Ain. Honestly, we can even just gradually call spirits to this room in smaller groups if need be.」
『That sounds like a viable option. Elves might notice them gathering in this room, but we can opt to feign ignorance for that. Even if that doesn’t work, they probably wouldn’t trouble us since we’re liked by spirits.』
To begin with, the reason why we don’t want spirits approaching us is because there are comparatively more elves in Ausente, and we don’t want any fuss. It’s not like we’d be treated badly if we were discovered.
It’s completely different from when I was exposed as a Song Princess at Estoque. Though even back then, hiding it wasn’t a priority either, and we even thought it would be somewhat safer for us if it was known. In this case, hiding is even less of a concern than it was before.
Thinking that, I turned my attention to the spirits in this room and saw the young spirit floating in circles while moving its mouth.
It’s probably either speaking or singing a song, but its voice can’t reach our ears.
Still, the sight of it was so adorable that my lips almost curled into a wide grin.
Ciel was also watching the spirit with delight.
Lisyl was watching over it like a guardian, and this scene just warms my heart.
As the young spirit continued spinning around, it then joined its hands, and I simultaneously heard an audible clap.
Wondering where that came from, I looked around and saw Mia staring surprised at the young spirit’s direction.
「Lady Cielmer, did you call for my attention?」
「I didn’t do anything. More importantly, Mia, did you hear that just now?」
「Yes. I thought I heard the sound of a clap…」
『It sounds like Mia hears it as well. Ain, you heard it too, right?』
『I did. I believe it came from that young spirit’s hands, but…』
If anyone were to have an answer, it would be Lisyl. Turning to her direction, she was nodding with a proud expression.
『Lisyl, could I bother you with a question??』
When I called Lisyl, she tilted her head.
It’s difficult to converse with Lisyl, but I do like how I don’t need to switch with Ciel to talk with her.
『That child made a sound just now, didn’t it?』
Lisyl nodded to my question, without any signs of doubt in her expression.
After several minutes of questioning, to sum up our findings: this spirit is categorically a lesser spirit. It apparently became a lesser spirit back when it transformed before our eyes.
At this point, a spirit’s nature is decided, like if it’s a fire or water spirit, and this little one seems to be a sound spirit.
It seems that this is Lisyl’s first time seeing one, and I appear to have greatly influenced it.
According to her, it’s a very unique spirit that can make sounds even the non-spirit sensitive can hear.
And that it had just gained the ability to do so earlier.
Realizing this, the sound spirit started clapping repeatedly, leading Lisyl to admonish it, but anyway.
After telling it that I might dislike the noise, it quickly behaved.
The noise isn’t an issue when inside this room, but it would be a problem when produced outdoors, so we’ll need to be strict with that.
Still, as long as it can abide by that rule, this sound spirit may prove to be a spirit that we’ll need. While it may be lacking in power now, we might have to rely on its assistance in the future. Maybe not as an absolute necessity, but as a reliable force.
「So that’s the gist of things; no need to worry much about it.」
「Understood. Still, the matter of spirits is something I personally find very interesting.」
「Normally, people can’t perceive them, after all. I wasn’t able to feel their presence until recently, too.」
「Will I also be able to see them someday?」
「That might be difficult. We’re mostly able to perceive them due to our special circumstance, you see.」
「That’s a shame.」
I switched with Ciel to brief Mia about the situation, and true to her words, Mia had a visible look of disappointment.
There’s honestly nothing we can do about it. Unless you have elven blood or a Job aligned with spirits, it’s practically impossible to perceive them.
Vaguely sensing their presence may be achievable, but seeing them requires talent.
We could only perceive spirits after stepping into the realm of divinity, so without a breakthrough of that level, it’s likely impossible to gain the ability to see spirits.
「Now, Lady Ainsel. All that’s left is to change the bedsheets; may I ask you to move aside?」
「You’re right. Good work.」
Observing the room, I noticed that the interior has been altered to resemble the manor’s.
The inner part of the room has practically the same arrangement as our bedroom, with only the guest room in front unchanged.
The only thing that’s different is the partition around the bed.
It serves to keep privacy when guests are around, so it can’t be helped.
The furniture here is of the same kind, so I can confidently say that this room is much more comfortable than any expensive lodging.
「Is that everything?」
「Yes, thank you for waiting.」
「In that case, please deliver the payment next.」
I retrieved what should be enough money to cover our fees and handed it to Mia.
She accepted it with a gentle smile, probably due to my clumsy way of instructing her.
Still, this is much better compared to before.
I’m just not used to ordering people around.
Part of it is my past life sensibilities making me feel awkward in doing so, but it’s also because I still can’t fully trust people.
Even now, if it were somebody other than Mia, I’d probably choose to pay the fees myself. Honestly, Mia is definitely better at instructing people than I am.
After seeing Mia off, I switched with Ciel.
「Since Mia left, why don’t we go back to our original topic and look at the courses?」
『Right, we don’t have much else to do anyhow.』
And so, we turned our eyes to the documents containing the offered classes. Written on the topmost are the courses we can attend, while the next page details the schedules and short outlines for each course.
We aren’t qualified for all courses, but we can enroll in any sorcery and hunter-related classes without any issues.
A few knight courses are also available for us.
While the program offerings may seem limited, there are a ridiculous number of sorcery-related courses, from sorcery fundamentals, puppet sorcery, sorceric tool studies, and many other specializations.
For now, Ciel and I decided on the classes we want to attend.
「I can understand sorceric tool studies, but I don’t think there’s much point in you taking fundamentals of sorcery, Ain.」
『It may end up being redundant, but since I learned sorcery through self-study, I’m a bit curious about it.
Who knows, I might discover something new, and it may also help in selecting spells adequate for Ailneige to use.』
「Is that how it is? In that case, is that also why we’re taking the hunter classes?」
『It’s a similar reason.』
Besides, it’s a good way to learn the standard strength of our peers.
As Ailneige is already E-rank on paper, we wouldn’t really gain graduation merits from the beginner-level hunter course, so this is purely to satisfy my curiosity. If I don’t like the actual course, I won’t hesitate to cut class either.
『As for you, it’ll be puppet sorcery, right?』
「It’s practically the reason why I came to the academy, after all. If possible, I wanted to take the course on golems too, but they have the same time slot.」
『That’s true.』
Do they occupy the same time slot because of their similarity?
In that case, they really could have just treated puppet sorcery as an offshoot of golemancy.
This came up before, but I don’t really see the necessity of puppet sorcery being a separate course.
Well, I don’t really know the intricacies of puppet sorcery, so maybe there’s an actual reason for it that I just don’t know.
After this, Ciel and I continued discussing the classes to enroll in until Mia returned.
And that ends things chapter! We officially have a new member in the crew! The young spirit probably wouldn’t have much screen time due to being a spirit, though.
It’s really funny how Mia has the need to transform every room they have to look similar to our girls’ bedroom back home, lol. And also, I like how the academy’s programs are basically: hunter, knight, sorcery (10+ majors). It’s first and foremost a sorcery academy, after all. Makes complete sense, still funny.
Now then, I hope you enjoyed this chapter. Please feel free to comment. Stay healthy, stay safe, and have a nice day~!
