“By the way, how do you think I can make my best friend fall for me?”
It had been a few days since I decided that I was going to marry Yukino. I had boldly declared that I would make her fall for me, but having absolutely no experience in romance, I had no clue what to do.
*: Maybe try being kind to her?*
*: Isn’t she already in love with you?*
*: Money, obviously.*
The comments offered a variety of responses. But none of them felt like a decisive answer.
“If she were already in love with me, she would’ve just agreed to marry me, don’t you think? The fact that she turned me down means she isn’t there yet.”
My very first marriage proposal had ended in failure. If Yukino did have feelings for me, she would have accepted my confession the first time.
“And besides, money, huh? Sure, thanks to everyone, I do have a good amount of financial security, but she already knows that. If she knows and still hasn’t made a move, then it probably doesn’t mean much to her, right?”
*: Wait, how does she know about your financial situation? Does she control your finances or something?*
“She helped me with my tax return, so she probably knows my annual income.”
Last year, Yukino was a huge help when it came to filing my taxes. If it had been left to me alone, I probably wouldn’t have gotten it done and would’ve ended up getting scolded by the management team.
*: You made your best friend do even that for you?*
*: You basically owe her your life at this point.*
“Honestly, yeah.”
*: If you want to make her fall for you, shouldn’t you figure out what she likes first?*
One of the comments caught my eye. That made sense—if I wanted her to fall for me, knowing her preferences was a fundamental first step.
“Her preferences… huh.”
*: Wait, don’t tell me you don’t know?*
*: Haven’t you two been together since birth?*
“We have, but neither of us has ever dated anyone before.”
In my 23 years of life, I had never seen Yukino in a relationship. Now that I thought about it, we had never really talked about romance either. Maybe she was just completely indifferent to it—a total asexual type.
“Oh, but she is looking for a partner now, so I guess she has some interest in it.”
Lately, for some reason, Yukino had been putting effort into finding a significant other. That meant she wasn’t completely uninterested in romance. If that was the case, then there was at least some chance that she could fall for me.
“Come on, help me think of a good way to do it. Before some random bug snatches her away, I want to make her mine.”
*: Easier said than done…*
Since I couldn’t come up with anything myself, I left it to my viewers. I focused on the screen, scanning the comments for any helpful ideas—when suddenly, a loud voice rang out behind me.
“BOO!!”
“Hiiee!?”
At this time of night, there shouldn’t have been anyone else in my house but me. The unexpected voice from completely outside my awareness startled me so much that I nearly fell out of my chair.
“Wh-What!?”
“Hehe, I came over~.”
Cautiously turning around, I found Yukino standing there with a mischievous smile.
Relieved that it wasn’t some unknown intruder but Yukino, I felt a surge of happiness. I hadn’t expected to see her today, and the unexpected visit made me rush over to her.
“Sorry for dropping by so late. I just really wanted to see you.”
She stuck out her tongue playfully, grinning like a mischievous kid. That made me smile a little too—but then I suddenly remembered.
I was still in the middle of a stream.
“Eh, ah, no, I don’t mind the time, but can you… be quiet for a sec?”
Yukino could come to my house anytime she wanted. Whether it was early morning, late at night, or in the middle of the day, she was always welcome. That was exactly why I had given her a spare key. But right now, her timing was a bit inconvenient.
“Why?”
Why? Because I was streaming, obviously. Yukino didn’t really understand the nature of my job, so if she hung around too much, I might accidentally slip up and reveal personal information. I needed to get her out of the room as soon as possible.
“Just be quiet. Seriously. Yu—I mean, you, just wait outside the room for now.”
“…Huh?”
I had never actually called her “best friend” to her face, so I almost blurted out “Yukino” instead. That was close.
For now, I just needed her to step out of the room. But she didn’t seem too eager to leave. Still, if she so much as said my name out loud, it would be a disaster.
“Hurry. Get out.”
Feeling bad, I ended up pushing her out a little forcefully. Once the stream was over, I would properly explain my work to her.
With that thought in mind, I returned to my gaming chair, ready to calm down the flood of comments that had started rushing in.
“Whew… Finally done. I really couldn’t keep up with the comments at the end.”
I had spent quite a bit of time explaining things after that. But when was the last time my viewership had spiked that much? That was the power of Yukino for you.
Since my debut, I had constantly bragged about her to my viewers, so even though having a non-streamer’s voice accidentally get picked up was a major blunder, the fans took it surprisingly well.
This time, things had worked out somehow, but a mistake was still a mistake. Determined to prevent something like this from happening again, I left my room to properly explain my job to Yukino—only to find the living room empty.
“Her shoes are gone… Did she go home?”
It was already late at night, so maybe she decided to leave since I was busy.
Yukino rarely ever came over just because she wanted to see me. The only times she sought comfort from me were when she was going through something difficult. That’s why I had assumed she would be staying over tonight.
“…Is she okay?”
I felt a little worried, but if something was wrong, she would definitely reach out. Reassuring myself with that thought, I sent her a quick message just in case.
I had no idea that a few days later, I would regret not chasing after her right away.
