I hesitated, but decided to use my trump card here.
I ordered the other werewolves to remain on high alert and began chanting a spell.

“Ye who returned from the Gate of Gewenna, and were denied the Gate of Hauland—behold my right hand; for it is the frozen sun.”

For a brief moment, magical energy enveloped my entire body, and a cold light bloomed in my right hand.
It was a basic necromancy spell.

I swung my right hand, commanding the bone spear unit hidden in the western forest to advance.
It might be foolish to deploy 2,000 skeletal soldiers just to face 400 infantry and cavalry. Ideally, I’d keep them hidden for the decisive battle sure to come someday.
But if I held back now and the enemy stormed into the city, it’d be catastrophic.
Better to crush them with full force than take risks.

The only issue was how slow the skeletons marched.
They could only move at a brisk walk. Ambushes were their specialty.
Sure enough, the Miraldia Allied Forces noticed the spear troops emerging from the west forest.
They probably won’t catch up in time…

The enemy broke their column formation and regrouped only the cavalry into a horizontal line. Then they accelerated.
They’re abandoning the infantry?
The foot soldiers picked up speed too, but not fast enough. The bone spear unit should be able to intercept them.

Hammarn, watching the approaching enemy closely, muttered;

“About fifty cavalry, I’d say.”

A small number, but cavalry is expensive—especially mounted archers.

“What shall we do, Vice-Commander? Mounted archers can’t breach the gate…”

His suggestion to simply watch and wait was clear, but I shook my head. I gave orders to the sixteen werewolves still on the wall.

“We’ll intercept the enemy archers at the gate! Hammarn team, Wott team, Schlein team, Jerich team—follow me!”

The werewolves looked surprised for an instant, but absolute obedience to the pack leader is the rule. They nodded firmly and leapt down from the wall.

From a height equal to a four-story building, they landed without a sound. They kept their four-man squads intact and were ready for combat.

“Hammarn, Wott, Schlein—flank to the left! Loop around to the enemy’s right!”

Right-handed archers hold the bow in their left hand. To shoot rightward from horseback ruins their posture—it’s harder to aim.
Unafraid of the approaching archers, the twelve werewolves dashed toward their right flank.

“What about us, Boss?”

Jerich and his three-man team looked at me.

I judged the distance and replied: “You’re my bodyguard.”

“Got it, boss.” The blacksmith’s son, with his steel-colored fur, grinned.

Tübahn’s mounted archers rapidly closed in. They were within range—but still hadn’t fired.
I didn’t know why, but this was our chance.
I inhaled deeply and roared with all my might.
It was my signature magic: Soulshaker.

At this distance, even a magic-infused roar didn’t reach full effect.
At close range, Soulshaker can shake souls—but this wasn’t enough to stop them outright.
It’s not a spell I can cast repeatedly either. I need to find a more efficient way to use it.

But the fact that they were on horseback worked in my favor.
The riders themselves weren’t shaken—but their horses were.
The enemy charge rapidly lost speed. Some horses panicked entirely and threw off their riders.
The chaos spread through their ranks as more riders fell.
Total confusion.

The twelve werewolves who had circled around to the enemy’s right flank didn’t miss their moment—they launched their attack.
Now for my part.

“I’m casting a support spell. Cover me.”
“You got it, boss. I’ll block the arrows.”

Jerich stepped in front of me protectively. The others surrounded me as well.

I drew in ambient magical energy with deep breaths. When I had enough, I transformed it into a spell.

“O bloodstained full moon, shine upon us who revel in madness.”

At that moment, the light dimmed slightly.
The magic energy on the battlefield began flowing toward us.

“Ohh… here it comes.”

Jerich wagged his tail with joy. The others did too.
I felt power welling up inside me and a cool wind enveloping my body. A sense of protection settled over me.
This was Bloodmoon, one of my specialized self-enhancement spells.
It strengthens allies nearby and shields them from enemy attacks.
The twelve werewolves on the flank should be under its blessing too.

I gave the order to charge.

“Let’s go—Massacre them!”
“Yeah!”

This was our first fight under the Demon Lord’s army where they had permission to kill everyone. The werewolves trembled with battle-frenzy.

“GRRROOAAARRR!”
“Eek—Aaahhh!”

The Miraldia archers descended into total panic.
Before they could fire many arrows, the werewolves struck—faster than the horses.
Mounted archers are elite troops with speed and range—but their horses were in chaos, making them no better than foot archers.
Their short bows lacked the power of longbows, too.
All their strengths were nullified.

Still, the battle wasn’t easy.
Dodging arrows while running is hard when your own speed adds to the arrows’ velocity.
I was fine, but someone in Jerich’s team was hit and went down.
A few from the flanking squad were also hit.
Please be alive, I prayed, not looking back.

We had to force close combat—so we dove straight into the enemy.

“RAAAGH!”

I roared and slashed at a mounted archer with my claws.
My talons tore through chainmail. Broken links and blood sprayed. The scream was quickly drowned in his own blood.

My enemy’s head split in two, I tossed him aside and went for the next.
Someone had drawn an arrow, aiming at a comrade.

“Not on my watch!”

I leapt onto his horse and slashed his bowstring mid-pass. I also took a few of his fingers, it seemed—he screamed.
I feel sorry for him, but these guys attacked us first.

I ignored the wounded and cut deeper into the enemy line, slicing through man and horse alike.
Lightly armored mounted archers fell easily.
Eventually, I too was swept up in the blood frenzy.
When I came to, the battle was over.

No enemy soldiers remained standing. The surviving horses were all riderless.

“Looks like it’s over, boss.”

Jerich, soaked in blood, smiled.

Apparently, he’d been protecting me the whole time. That explained why I was unharmed.

In the distance, the enemy infantry was clashing with my Spearbone corps.
With such a massive difference in numbers, it wasn’t much of a fight.
I wanted to let them flee, but now that they’d seen werewolves, that wasn’t possible. I couldn’t risk them taking information back.
Victory was inevitable—but I raised my right hand to give new orders.

“Encircle them.”

The Spearbone corps formation shifted from defense to envelopment. The line moved to surround the enemy from behind.
With 2,000 skeleton soldiers, the wings closed in on both sides.
There was no escape. All that remained was to crush them with numbers and coordination.
The sounds of battle continued a while longer—but soon fell silent.
The skeletons take no prisoners. As long as the living remain, they do not stop.

Thus ended the first battle to defend Lüenheit—with the complete annihilation of the enemy.
