In short, Ira Muerte was also selling a cure for that disease. Except that theirs was awfully expensive, and caused severe side effects, so they also sold medicine to treat those, at a high markup.
It was easy to see what a cheaper and more effective cure would do. So the seller and his entire family was assassinated, setting an example of what would happen if someone kept trying to sell the new cure.
As for the alchemist, he ended up joining the organization.
All of that made Alma want to execute Garroba on the spot, that much was obvious from the rage contained in her voice, but she kept herself in control. She had to swallow those desires and continue with the interrogation.
“So she had to go through that too…”
That was one of the reasons why Alma pursued Ira Muerte with so much determination, to avenge her friend.
When Mira heard that, rather than pitying Alma, she found it commendable that she had continued working hard all this time.
With so many victims, it was not just Alma, but many others had also lost dear friends to Ira Muerte over the years.
So Mira herself decided to vow she would not spare any efforts to completely crush Ira Muerte.
Meanwhile, Garroba kept spilling a lot of information.
He revealed the location he used as a hideout. A certain island to the east of Nirvana had been turned into his fortress.
There were also many smaller bases set up across the continent, outposts for their assassinations. Two of those were located close to Nirvana.
Then he continued with other types of information.
“One of them is called August…”
It was time to hear about the remaining leaders of Ira Muerte. That was one of their most well-hidden secrets. Many influential countries had worked together, trying to pry open that secret, without success. Until now.
Finally there would be some light shining on the darkness that enshrouded Ira Muerte for so long.
First came August. That name, and what kind of person he was, had already been revealed through Iris’ power. But there was more to him.
First, his current location. He was hiding in Meditorea, a city in the southern regions of the Ark Continent. There he took over the city’s red light district, as he not only commanded dark routes, but was also a lord of the night.
As of late, he was leaning more on that latter role, to torture the oracle.
“He’s the worst.”
“That’s awful.”
“Unbelievable.”
Esmeralda muttered in irritation, followed by Noin and Mira.
“The one responsible for handling and providing weapons is Ignaz…”
Next came their arms dealer.
Ignaz Rowglin, a Garidia man who led the Hilvelanz Bandits, a group of lowlifes who had taken control of an area around the center of the Ark Continent.
They especially disliked nobles, so often they would go after people in high positions.
In current times, the Hilvalenz Bandits had grown to many thousands of members, and Ignaz’ side hustle selling and buying weapons meant that most of them were very well equipped. That was how they managed to fend off any armies trying to take them down.
They were a constant thorn in the side of the local government, but all the high tolls imposed on neighboring countries stopped them from wanting to help.
“I’ve heard of them before, but I had no idea that the whole bandit thing was just a cover.”
“A bandit band with thousands of members and first class equipment…that’s going to be complicated to deal with.”
“That’s true. They’re like a hornet’s nest, if we prod at them the wrong way they might decide to spread all over the place. We have to be careful.”
The Hilvelanz Bandits’ stronghold was quite famous, and the only reason why it was still standing was because of how well equipped the guards were.
A medium army going there would just be defeated without trouble. A more elite force with members like Mira and the rest would likely win, but it would still be a difficult task.
But getting there was still an issue of international treaties and foreign interests.
On top of that, since they were so numerous, it was also difficult to effectuate a full capture. Some were bound to slip through the cracks, and would eventually attack innocent people.
The only way to stop that was to completely surround the fortress, and have soldiers in the right positions.
Moving such an army would also end up costing a lot, so sucking it up and paying the tolls always ended up being the more economic solution.
But now that they knew that the bandits were led by Ignaz, who also had a leading position in Ira Muerte, not fighting was no longer an option.
Hunting down the Hilvelanz Bandits would be yet another major project.
“The one in charge of human and magic beast trading is this duke called Trulli…”
The next name Garroba revealed was Duke Trulli from Grimdart.
He was involved in all sorts of kidnappings, poaching, and at one point he even captured spirits to sell off to Chimera Clauzen.
But as Garroba detailed, at some point there had been a leak and all of Trulli’s crimes were exposed to his country, and he was thrown in prison. They still did not know who did it, but almost overnight, Trulli’s slave trading empire crumbled down to its foundation.
“Hold on, even a duke from one of the Three Gods Countries was involved…?”
“I’m more curious about whoever exposed him. They managed to take down a duke.”
“Huh, Duke Trulli from Grimdart…?”
The Three Gods Countries were the most influential of the continent. A duke from there had more power than the kings of smaller countries.
Knowing that one such duke was deeply involved with Ira Muerte came as a shock to Alma, as well as Noin and Esmeralda.
But Mira began to think, somehow that name felt oddly familiar, like she had heard it recently. After mulling over it, she finally remembered. It was really simple. Lastrada AKA. Fuzzy Dice had mentioned a slave trader who was his final target, Duke Trulli.
(Which means he managed to complete his final act )
She was happy for his friend’s accomplishment, but she kept silent about it.
Everyone else was clearly curious about it all, but Mira would not tell them that it had been the work of Lastrada, or Fuzzy Dice. After all, doing so would disappoint Lastrada.
A superhero being able to reveal their secret identity was also a joy reserved to them. Mira could not steal his thunder and take that from him. If she did, he would resent her for a long time, and he was really annoying to deal with once he got like that.
So Mira just turned away and blabbered, “I guess someone grew a backbone and did it.”
***
Thanks to Alma and many others’ efforts, they had finally captured one of Ira Muerte’s leaders, and had interrogated him. All of the information extracted from him cleared many mysteries for Alma and the rest.
That information would also greatly steer the direction of their next moves. And that was not all the information Garroba gave. There were some shocking truths he spilled as well.
“There is one more base, the main one…”
Ira Muerte had strongholds and bases scattered all over the continent, but when he was done giving all of their locations, that was how he followed it up. So far, he had made it seem like he and the other leaders had their own main bases, four of them.
Four leaders, four bases, together forming Ira Muerte as an organization.
Alma urged him to continue, and he spoke with a languid monotone voice. There was one more leader, their true boss, who stood above all four of them.
“Wait what, he didn’t think of mentioning that before…?”
“Now this is getting more complicated.”
“That does sound annoying to deal with.”
The strange thing was that Garroba hardly had anything to say about his boss. As it turned out, their only means of contact were devices. That boss’ name, age, species, face, age, strength, everything was a mystery. And none of the other three leaders knew much more either.
All they knew was a bit of information regarding the boss’ location, that Ira Muerte had some mysterious goal beyond just making money.
