“Sasori told me that one. Sasori, one of the Fifty Bells’ elite Hidden. And right, Hebi was there too!”
Hidden was the title given to an elite group within the Fifty Bells. A branch director like Claus had to know about them.
So Mira decided to give out the name of two of them, hoping that they would give her enough credibility to somehow make way to the means to contact the headquarters.
But her expectations were once again thwarted in a different way.
“I see… Sasori and Hebi, you say. If memory serves, they were together just before the final fight, alongside Arlon and one more person. So does this mean that you’re Mira, the Spirit Queen?”
It seemed like the branch directors knew quite a lot about what happened behind the scenes before the final fight against Chimera Clauzen, and so Claus was able to identify her as the Spirit Queen without her bringing it up.
“Ohh! Yes, that’s me!”
Being identified so quickly came as a bit of a surprise to Mira, but more than anything, she was overjoyed that things were getting better, as she leaned forward in excitement. And just in case to clear any doubts, she placed her adventurer license on the table.
“So it really is you. I had a hunch when I first heard your name, but I couldn’t find the right moment to ask about it. Either way, that makes things easier to discuss.”
That adventurer license was the final proof to confirm her identity, so Claus smiled friendly as there was nothing else to be worried about now.
“Actually, we received some indications from Uzume…”
As Claus explained, around two months before, all branches had received letters with instructions, personally signed by Uzume. Those instructions were, ‘If the Spirit Queen visits a branch, do everything possible to fulfill her requests.’
“She actually did that…?”
Uzume, or Kagura as Mira knew her, had already anticipated that Mira would come seeking help, and put things in place to make sure that went smoothly.
Thanks to that, Mira no longer had to go on a longwinded conversation to assure Claus she knew Sasori and the rest and could be trusted.
Glad that things were working out, she finally stated why she was there.
“Well then, I’d like to get in contact with the headquarters, could you arrange for that?!”
“Of course.”
Mira asked that, full of hope, and Claus smiled as he replied, adding, “Please follow me,” as he stood up.
There was only a bit of disappointment in Claus’ eyes, as he had been really hoping he would get to do some proper work for the Fifty Bells again.
The password had been a big failure, but somehow, Mira still managed to get access to the branch’s communication device.
Mira followed Claus through a corridor out of the meeting room, crossing from one room to another further into the branch.
Eventually, they passed through a hidden door, reaching a familiar place for Mira. A white room with a black device set up in the center.
“I’ll be in the office just outside the corridor. Just drop by when you’re done here.”
“Got it. Thank you again.”
Claus gave a quick bow before heading out to get back to work, and Mira thanked him before facing the device, thinking back to the time she used the one in Sentopolly.
The device looked a lot like the black phones common in the 80s, but unlike a phone, it would immediately connect to the headquarters as soon as the receiver was lifted.
Remembering that, she picked up the receiver, being determined to not mess up again like the first time.
“Hellooo, hellooo, is there anyone thereee? It’s meee, Miraaa!”
She held the receiver to her ear and instantly began shouting into it like that. The previous time Kagura had picked up the call, but as she was traveling with the Angel Tiriel, she could only wonder who would be on the other side this time.
If she had to guess, it was probably going to be Alioth, the current acting leader of the Fifty Bells. But after some time, something less that reassuring came from the other side.
‘…ent…most there…’
It was a faint female voice, like it came from a distance, and it was not Kagura’s voice. There were other sounds too, like some thumping and shuffling around that slowly grew louder.
There was even a loud thud like someone fell over, followed by a pained cry, so one could only imagine what was happening on the other side.
But that did not slow down the owner of those voices, and after a pair of hurried footsteps grew closer, there was finally a clear response from the other side.
‘Phew… Hello, headquarters here. Could you please provide your codename and division?’
Those few seconds were enough for Mira to get a pretty clear idea that the person on the other side was rather clumsy and easily flustered, making her wonder if that really was the best person to entrust with a message for Kagura.
“I’m Mira. I’m in no division, but lately people have taken to referring to me as the Spirit Queen.”
Since Mira was technically an outsider to the organization, she decided it was best to call herself the Spirit Queen to avoid any conflicts, as they would recognize that name as well.
And surely enough, that had an even stronger effect than she anticipated.
‘What…huhhh?! The Spirit Queen?! Are you really THE Spirit Queen?! Woahh! I can’t believe it! You actually called!’
Her voice had been reserved and low at first, only to burst with emotion and excitement shortly after. And from the way she spoke, it was clear that the branch directors were not the only ones briefed about Mira.
“Now now, I don’t know what’s going on but could you calm down?”
When Mira finally interrupted her, she let out a loud, ‘Ah..!’ and fell silent. Then after a few seconds of silence, she verified, ‘Umm, are you really the Spirit Queen?’
“Yes, it’s me. I was allowed to use this device after the branch director in Ratnatraya saw who I was too.”
Mira briefly explained how she got to place the call, which produced another loud cheer from the other side.
‘It’s such an honor to be able to talk to you!’
And then she began prattling on without stopping again.
As it turned out, she was also a summoner, making her look up to Mira a lot, which explained all her strong emotions. She even volunteered to be in charge of answering calls because she heard that there was a possibility the Spirit Queen would call. And she had heard everything she could about Mira from Arlon.
“Hmm, I see now! So you’re a fellow summoner! Alright, ask me anything about summoning that you want!”
Mira thought of all summoners as her younger siblings, so she decided to be an open book for anything the person on the other side wanted, solving any issues she had one after another.
