Irvine was a true Amukham warrior, raised in the shadow of his father and older brothers. Now, an obstacle loomed before him, one that had to be destroyed. He felt something hot rising from deep within his chest.
(Bibi is behind me. I have to protect her! There’s no way I’m letting you b̲a̲s̲t̲a̲r̲d̲s̲ through!)
He licked his upper lip unconsciously, and a smile crept across his face. Setting up for a crouching start like a sprinter at the starting line, he braced himself. His bright, dark-blonde hair, a trademark of the Haggard family, swayed, and his amber, wolf-like eyes began to glow faintly gold.
He launched forward, left arm stretched out, dragging his longsword in his right as he kicked off the ground with explosive speed. Of the two shadow dogs charging at him, the one in the lead fixed its sights on Irvine and lunged.
Its jaws opened wide, aiming for his neck.
Irvine pulled back his left arm, timed it perfectly, and drove his fist straight into the beast’s open mouth. His entire arm sank into the shadow dog’s maw up to the shoulder.
The creature’s fangs clamped down, gnashing into his upper arm over and over. The force of stopping the creature’s leap with his left hand twisted Irvine’s body, swinging him hard to the left.
At the same time, the second shadow dog veered right, trying to slip past. But as Irvine spun while carrying the momentum, he firmly held the longsword in his right hand and swung it outward with the help of the centrifugal force. The blade met its mark, slamming into the shadow dog’s foreleg.
The creature’s front limbs buckled under the impact, shattering from their momentum and the sheer weight of the blow. It collapsed on the spot.
(Damn it! I didn’t sever the legs! I’m still not strong enough! But!)
He felt the shadow dog clamped onto his left arm was already starting to foam at the mouth.
(It’s a matter of time before it chokes! Giving it my left arm paid off! Now for the other one!)
Irvine threw down his longsword, the shadow dog still clamped onto his mangled left arm, and made his way toward the other shadow dog that had been knocked down. He wrapped his arm around its neck, attempting to strangle it into submission, but the beast bit at his right arm and began to try and pull him.
“Argh! You mutt! Stay quiet, would you! Aahh!”
The shadow dog loomed over him, its fangs tearing into his right arm. It shook its head violently, as if trying to rip the limb clean off.
“Irvine! Irvine!!”
“Don’t mind me, Bibi! I’ve got this covered! You focus on your thing!”
Irvine shouted, his voice ragged as the creature’s fangs tore into him. Blood from his wounded arm splashed across his face.
“I-Irvine…”
Beatrice bit her lip hard, pouring her Mana into the spell. The magic circle at her feet flared to life.
“Done! It’s complete!”
The summoning circle now brimmed with concentrated Mana, its lines glowing to show its completion.
“Do it, Bibi! Get Susie here!”
Irvine’s voice rang through the battlefield.
Beatrice began to chant the summoning incantation, her voice rising with power.
“Kelm eigo spelo eude. I plead. My follower, heed my call and appear before me! Kelm eigo spelo eude. Hear me! Appear before me, Argernon! Bring Su here!”
The summoning circle pulsed with brilliant light. It surged upward, wrapping the summoning circle in a radiant glow. The light twisted and swirled slowly before narrowing, pulling toward the center like a funnel of pure magical force.
Irvine looked up at the pillar of light.
Dana, Mary, and Lombard turned around, sensing the shift. Corin, Kate, Willie, and everyone else who was still conscious stared in silence, swallowing hard as they watched.
Even the shadow dogs seemed to sense something. They froze mid-motion and growled warily at the shining column. The two vampires narrowed their eyes, their expressions suddenly sharp. All eyes were fixed on the glowing light.
Then, gradually, the brilliance began to fade, and a figure took shape within it. A girl stood there, her red hair gathered into two small pigtails that gleamed like rubies under the sunlight.
She wore a one-piece dress of fresh spring grass, her skirt fluttering softly in the breeze, the ruffles stitched into the hem swaying with each subtle movement.
Despite her delicate appearance, she wore a sword belt around her waist with two blades sheathed at her sides, an unusual contrast to her attire. Her knitted boots were pressed neatly together, and she stood with perfect posture, her hands gently cupped in front of her chest, cradling a precious animal. In her palms, the tiny rodent squeaked and twitched, its nose sniffing at the air.
“A-Argernon! Su!!”
Beatrice called out to the girl and the small creature, her voice trembling as tears welled in her eyes.
“What the hell? I thought you were summoning some powerful familiar with that grand summoning circle. Honestly, you had me for a second. But what’s this? That’s just a girl!”
“I agree, it’s a bit disappointing. But they went through all of that trouble just to bring her here, so we should stay on our toes, just in case.”
Eliza replied. With a casual flick of her right arm, she tossed William aside like a broken doll.
His limp body flew two or three meters through the air before rolling to a stop. He didn’t make a sound, as he had already lost consciousness.
“Well, yeah, but she’s still human.”
Doug said, to which Eliza simply shrugged, adding, “That is indeed so.”
Argernon leapt down from Susie’s palms and scampered over to Beatrice, squeaking proudly and sniffing with obvious satisfaction.
“Yes, Argernon! You did great! You did it!”
Beatrice praised him, hugging the little creature tightly and rubbing her cheek against it in affection.
Susie stood quietly before them, her gaze drifting across the battlefield.
“What is this?”
Susie’s wide eyes took in the bloody chaos around her. Children, covered in wounds. Just ahead of her was Carl, and beyond him, Irvine. A little farther, she saw Mia, Lombard, Dana, and Helena.
“What is going on?”
Before she could process more, the shadow dog that had been savaging Irvine snarled, baring its bloody fangs, and lunged straight at her. Beatrice watched in horror as the creature raced past her, launching itself toward Susie. But in the next instant, it was gone. She had only heard a poof sound for a moment. Susie stood still, her left wrist outstretched, as if she had casually swatted something away.
Then a loud sound came from Bibi’s right.
Everyone turned. 20-30 meters away to the right, a massive cloud of dust rose where something had slammed violently into the earth.
Though the distance made details difficult to see, it was clear the ground had been gouged out. Jutting from the crater were what looked like animal limbs, sprawled apart at least five meters between them.
“Being prudent? Yeah, right! Screw that!!!”
Susie spat out unfamiliar words, words that Beatrice and the others didn’t understand. She reached up, undid her hair tie, and shook her head.
Her red jade hair fanned out, catching the golden rays of the setting sun.
“I will not allow anyone to get hurt before my eyes! I will not let anyone die!”
Susie Cloud stood proud, her crimson hair ablaze in the light.
