“Big sis Susie! Are you coming to the training area today1?”
Helena Slater, who had advanced to the Level 7 study group today, asked Susie excitedly.
“Yes. I’m going today. I can’t wait to see how much stronger everyone has gotten over the… summer break.”
“What? Big sis Su’s coming?! YEY!”
Mary Frank, one of Victor’s sisters and also a Level 7 like Helena, cheered excitedly. She rushed toward Susie and hugged her tightly.
“Ah! You always hug her suddenly like that! It’s not fair!”
Helena, not wanting to be left out, also embraced Susie in a tight hug.
She had once been wary of Susie when she first joined the school, but after the final meeting of the semester, Helena had completely changed, becoming one of Susie’s admirers.
This was likely the essence of Amukham village’s respect for the strong. And even though she had an awkward smile on her face, Susie still held both girls’ hands.
“If Su’s going, then I’m going too!”
“You can’t, Mia! You have to teach the underclassmen!”
Corin crossed her arms over her chest, adjusted her glasses with a quick motion, and shot Mia a cold look as she spoke.
“B-But Corin, aren’t you and Bibi here?”
“Now that Arrow has graduated, the only one in the higher levels who’s good at offense is you. Both Bibi and I specialize in defense. And Carl also moved to the higher levels today. You have to teach him!”
“B-But then Su and I…”
“Do your best, Mia! If you teach them nicely, I think everyone else will also do their best!”
Susie wrapped Mia’s hands in hers, speaking to her encouragingly. “When we’re done, let’s go home together, okay?” Susie stared into Mia’s eyes as she squeezed her hand.
“Su! Okay! I’ll do my best and teach everyone! Please wait for me later!”
“Okay!”
Susie said as she exchanged a smile with Mia. Meanwhile, Beatrice and Corin shared a few words as they watched in amazement.
“So sometimes even the guardians can have the tables turn on them!”
“Well, I think that Su’s mental age is higher than yours. It can’t be helped.”
“W-What are you saying? Su’s hopeless without me! Hopeless I tell you!”
“Yea, yea, sure. Let’s go. Everyone’s waiting.”
“God!”
“See you, Su! Take care of the training area! Later!”
Beatrice said, and from her shoulder, a small rodent’s eyes gleamed as it let out a tiny squeak toward Susie. As Susie waved the three of them and the rodent goodbye, Helena suddenly grabbed her hand.
“Big sis Su! Hurry! Let’s go!”
Helena said, leading Susie by the hand into the training area.
Inside, Lombard Brook, the oldest man present, was overseeing the training of the underclassmen. Dana, the most senior student, and Irvin, who was in the same grade as Lombard, were absent. At Susie’s suggestion, they had committed to running as much as possible every day, pushing their limits.
It all started when Susie pointed out that Dana and Irvine’s Chi usage was weaker than that of the two graduates during the sparring session before summer vacation.
This issue stemmed from the fact that the two of them had yet to properly learn to manipulate Mana.
Mana manipulation was a crucial and essential skill, even for those in vanguard positions. By channeling Mana into their equipment, they could enhance its performance and strengthen themselves. Cara’s clones were also the result of advanced Mana manipulation.
Dana had always avoided training in Mana manipulation due to her dislike of meditation. But now, she and Irvine were the most senior students. Mastering Mana manipulation was a prerequisite for admission to the Dekenbel High School, which they would be applying to next year. If they fail to achieve this, they wouldn’t be able to continue their education. There was no more time to waste.
Irvine was well aware of this reality. Among the higher leveled students, they were the only ones who still couldn’t control Mana.
“I know that, but we can’t improve unless we meditate, right? I always fall asleep when I meditate…” Irvine said.
“I get that! I fell asleep, too! I just can’t sit still…”
“Then why don’t you do it while you move?” Susie suggested.
“ “What?” ”
Susie’s words took both Irvine and Dana by surprise.
“Don’t think about anything—just run and become aware of your body. Pay attention to the shifting of your weight, your center of gravity, where you feel strength, where you’re relaxed. Try to feel those when you’re running. You can even do it while walking, probably…”
“Is that… really okay?”
Irvine widened his eyes and asked hesitantly.
“The important thing is to not think about unnecessary things. Don’t think about anything else—just observe your body…”
“I’m really good at running without thinking! Is it really okay to do it like that?! Great! I’m gonna go for a run then!”
“Hey! Dana! Wait up! I’m coming too!”
Overjoyed, the two of them took off running, dashing out in excitement.
“I’d expect nothing less… But doing that while running… We wouldn’t have thought of that.”
“Once upon a time, I trained myself to be aware of my body while walking and standing. It’s important to maintain that awareness every day…!”
This conversation took place during the first day of the new school year. Since then, Irvine and Dana had been running together every day.
“Ah, Susie! You’re here today?” Lombard, who had been working with the younger students, noticed Susie entering the training area and walked over to speak with her.
“Yes! Thanks for the hard work, Lombard!” Susie smiled and tilted her head as she responded.
“Thanks. G-Go get changed quickly. Since you’re here, how about we spar today?” Caught off guard by Susie’s bright smile, Lombard averted his gaze, scratched his cheek with his fingertips, and asked for a spar.
“What? Sure! Please wait for me.”
“Yup. No rush.”
Lombard’s face flushed slightly as Susie smiled at him once again.
Lombard Brook was the same age as Susie and Irvine, but at just 13 years old, he was already a large boy, standing over 170 centimeters tall. His muscular arm gripped a heavy battle axe. He was every bit the power fighter he appeared to be.
His shoulder-length, carrot-orange hair was wild and cropped unevenly, while his deep-set eyes, a gentle and clear blue, gave him a surprisingly soft expression.
Susie found it “So cute!” to see the very picture of a big, graceful, strong boy looking so bashful2.
Helena, standing beside her, tilted her head in confusion as she watched Susie cover her mouth, struggling to suppress a smile.
“Ah! Big sis Su!”
Stephan, who had collapsed in the training area, gasping for breath, suddenly noticed Susie. With a gulp, he forced himself up and shouted.
“Big sis Su! You’re here today?! If that’s the case, then please, please spar with me! Get changed quickly!”
“Hey, Stephan. Didn’t you just say you were totally wiped out?”
“I, I didn’t say that! I can still go! Big sis Su! Lom is lying! I’m like totally fine!”
Lombard placed his right hand on his forehead and let out a deep sigh… “You like Susie too much…” Lombard muttered under his breath.
“N-No, I don’t! It’s not like that! That aside! Lom, move already! Big sis Su’s coming, so move. Quickly!” Stephan’s face turned red as he snapped at Lombard.
Susie couldn’t help but giggle. “Okay, Stephan. I’ll spar with you. So just give me a minute, okay?” Susie winked playfully, tilting her head with a teasing smile.
Stephan instantly turned bright red, freezing in place.
“You’re teasing him too much, Susie.” Lombard let out another sigh, placing a hand on his forehead and shaking his head as if he had a headache.
“Ahaha! Sorry, sorry.” Susie grinned mischievously.
“Enough of this, both of you! Big sis Su is sparring with me first! You’re waiting!” Helena clung to Susie, shooting a menacing glare at both of them.
Hearing that, Stephan couldn’t stand down. “Y-You won’t even last five seconds, Helena! It’s always the same!!!”
“And you wouldn’t even last a second!” Helena placed her hands on her hips and glared at Stephan.
“I, I will! I definitely will!!!”
“Come, big sis Su, let’s get changed.” Mary tugged at Susie’s hand, urging her toward the changing rooms. As she walked, Susie took a quick glance around the training area, checking on the children inside.
Lombard, looking thoroughly exasperated, watched as Helena and Stephan continued their bickering.
The twins, Clark and Ashton, who had been lying down alongside Stephan earlier, had also gotten up.
Irma Attlee, who had moved up to the fourth level this term, and Janice Karloff both noticed Susie’s arrival and cackled with delight.
The two boys, David Blake and Charles Beaumont, who’d shared a desk with Leila and Mabel on the first day of school, were being taught swordsmanship by Frank Zielight3, of the fifth level. All three of them beamed with excitement upon seeing Susie.
At the entrance, Belknap Long and Cara’s younger brother, Alan Edgar, who, like Helena and her friends, had moved up to a higher level this term, were accompanied by Beatrice’s younger brother, Edward Croque, and the two identical twin sisters, Eva and Vallette Avans. The three of whom had just been admitted.
All three looked excited.
In front of the entrance to the locker room in the training area, Susie noticed Phoebe Kaitz, a 3rd level, and Dennis Hortley, a 4th level, both of whom had been in the research group with her the day before. The two of them rushed toward the locker room.
“Huh? You two are here today?”
“That’s right! We came here after we heard you were coming, big sis Susie!”
Phoebe said, and Dennis nodded in agreement.
“I see! Then let’s get changed!”
Susie patted their heads and walked into the changing room. ‘They’re all so cute and energetic.’ Susie thought, feeling happy to be surrounded by such lively children.
She felt a small sense of happiness4.
