To the north, the Amukham Forest stretched out, and beyond it, the Daypahra Mountains were supposed to rise… but I couldn’t see them. Mainly for my own mental health!
“What do you think? It’s a great spot, isn’t it? I really wanted to come here with everyone before leaving the village.”
“Yes! It’s amazing, Cara! I’m glad I, and everyone, came!”
“Thank you, Su. And don’t forget about us while we’re gone, okay? You can’t forget about us!”
I felt Cara’s grip tighten around my hand.
“I won’t! There’s no way I would! And don’t say that you’ll be gone!”
Overcome with emotion, I grasped Cara’s hand with both of mine and cried out, stimulated by the sad words she was saying.
Then, suddenly, another hand rested on my shoulder from behind, and a voice whispered into my ear.
“Thank you. I too won’t ever forget you, my sweet baby.”
A shiver shot up my spine, and at that exact moment, Cara’s corkscrew curls seemed to shrink in alarm.
With a loud crack—like something being crushed—she sent flying backward!
“YOU! Where’d you crawl out from!”
Cara quickly took on a stance, as she shot a sharp glare at that. She was fully prepared for battle1.
The person coolly brushed their beautiful platinum blonde hair as if nothing had happened.
“Now there, we who love each other do not bother with things such as distance or place. Why? What a meaningless question.”
The person spoke with an air of sophistication, their eyes cast downward in a dramatic huff—but despite their composure, their nose was bleeding like a waterfall.
Hearing the commotion, everyone immediately gathered around.
“Victor?! What are you doing here?!”
“What’s going on?! Why are you here?!”
At Alicia and Jessica’s questions Victor responded calmly.
“One does not need a reason to go see the one they love. Love is nurtured whenever you do not get to see that person, little girl.”
I felt like I had heard that line somewhere before, but before I could think about it further, the voice appeared from behind Dana.
Sticking closely to Dana’s back, Victor gently grasped her left wrist with his left hand, then slid his right hand around her waist, trailing it along her right arm as if he were crawling up it… He then rested his chin on her right shoulder and breathed into her ear.
“MYAAAAA!!!”
I could clearly see that Dana was completely overwhelmed with disgust.
Immediately afterward, she pulled a stick-shaped object from somewhere and swung it down with great force. The stick extended and locked into place like an expandable baton, transforming into a short spear!
Dana spun the short spear swiftly and struck Victor hard in the side.
A loud breaking sound rang out, and Victor’s body bent in half, flying away with tremendous force. He crashed into the thick bushes on the side, disappearing into the greenery2. Then a large tree behind the bushes shook violently, followed by a loud thud as if something had slammed into it.
“Everyone, brace yourselves! This thing isn’t going down that easily!”
Jessica called out, taking control of the situation.
“Dana! That thing3 flew north so be careful of that side! Cara! You cover the south! Alicia! Take the west! Corin, stick with Dana! Bibi, you’re with Alicia! I’ll go with Cara! Provide backup to one another and stay vigilant! Mia! Don’t leave Su’s side! He’s clearly aiming for Su!!!”
The level of enthusiasm, the heightened sense of tension, the seamless teamwork—this was far more intense than when we all went hunting in the outer layers of the forest at the beginning of the month. Everyone’s eyes were scary.
“What’s going on! How could he just appear here out of nowhere?!”
Dana muttered, scanning the area warily.
“Well, it really was just a coincidence, I came here to make memories with my dear younger sisters after not seeing you for a while, and lo and behold, my honey just happened to be here as well. If this is not fate, then I don’t know what is. Don’t you think so too, my little girl?”
As he spoke, Victor casually wrapped an arm around Dana’s waist. Dana’s eyes widened in surprise as she turned to look at him.
(Ah! Victor’s hand just brushed Dana’s a̲s̲s̲!)
“NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!”
Dana let out a rare girlish scream.
Tears welled up in her eyes as she swung her short spear at blinding speed—yet the blade met only empty air. Victor was already gone.
“What we need is not to fight. It’s to love each other. Don’t you think so too, my darling?”
Victor appeared behind Alicia, who was running towards Dana. Seizing Alicia’s arm, he pulled her into a tight embrace, and whispered sweet nonsense as if he were some love-struck warrior.
“What you need, is rigid, direct educational guidance—through physical language!”
Without hesitation, Alicia slammed her elbow into his neck, knocking him to the right. Simultaneously, she swept his legs from under him, completely knocking him on his side.
Or at least, that’s what should’ve happened. Before Victor’s body even touched the ground—he was gone again.
As if sensing something, Cara reacted quickly. With an acrobatic grace, she spiraled up a nearby coniferous tree, twisting her way up the trunk and branches. In a matter of seconds, she was perched on a thick branch 15 meters above the ground, scanning the area below.
“If we are to speak the same words, then let us whisper sweet words of love as we press these lovely lips together, my sweet heart.”
Victor embraced Cara from behind and then began to speak of nonsense while pressing his lips against Cara’s4.
Cara slipped out of Victor’s arms, moved behind him, and wrapped her arms around him in a restraining hug. Then, as if performing a suplex, she crashed headfirst into the ground!
(Ah! Cara! That’s an Izuna Drop! You shouldn’t do that move while wearing a skirt5!!!)
“Then meet those lips with the earth!!!”
Just before Victor’s head made contact with the ground, Cara released him and spun several times in the air before landing gracefully.
At nearly the same moment, Victor’s head struck the ground with a loud thud.
However! Despite the deep gouge left in the earth, his figure was nowhere to be seen!
(Just what is up with this dude?! What’s up with these phantom-like movements, and that seemingly immortal body of his?! Is he really human?!)
“Don’t you think it’s a boy’s duty to teach these dainty lips the sweetness of love if they’re going to kiss each other, my baby?”
Before I even realized it, Victor had placed his right hand on my left cheek, his face drawing closer as he whispered to me.
(H-His face… A-A man’s face so close… His breath is on my cheek… W-Why? Why won’t my body move? Ahh… His breath brushed against my nose… I… can’t think…)
A strange, comical sound rang out as a beautiful leg slammed into Victor’s face from the top. His neck compressed down awkwardly, as if it was practically buried into his own body.
Alicia’s spinning kick exploded against Victor’s face, sending him flying.
(A Manji Kick6!)
I was finally released from Victor, and exhaled deeply as I had apparently forgotten how to breathe. My chest pounded, and my heart raced at a tremendous speed. I could hear my own heartbeat echoing behind my ears.
My strength drained away, and I nearly collapsed to my knees.
“S-Su! Are you okay?! Su!”
Mia caught me before I could fall. She looked into my face with concern, calling my name repeatedly.
Why hadn’t I noticed his approach? If I had been more aware of my surroundings, there was no reason I shouldn’t have detected it…
I then remembered something my junior at work had told me once.
“Even a powerful master can be caught off guard by an unexpected blow. Apparently he’d been caught off guard by a child. The master laughed as he shared a story about his two-year-old nephew, who was swinging a toy and accidentally struck him on the head while he was sitting down. Even that master, with all his skill, hadn’t sensed the attack coming. If even a master can be caught unaware by a pure, innocent child, then how much easier would it be for someone with the intent to attack?”
If that were the case, then Victor’s actions were pure and innocent, without any guilt or evil intentions…
(What’s up with that?! That’s even more frightening!)
Was it the kind of thing driven purely by instinct—an indiscriminate reflex of desire?
(That’s like, really creepy7!)
I grabbed my own shoulders and shivered violently.
“Were you that scared, Su? It’s all right now, okay? Everything’s going to be okay!”
Mia reassured me as she wrapped her arms around me. Ah… this warmth, the soft comfort of being enveloped in her body—it soothed me. I didn’t want to think about anything right now. I just wanted to sink into this embrace.
“S-Su! U-Um, did your lips touch?”
I stiffened and looked up at Mia.
“Ah! I’m sorry! I made you remember it, didn’t I? I’m so sorry!”
“No! It’s fine! They… didn’t touch… They didn’t, it’s fine!”
“Really?! Really, really? That’s great. I’m so relieved. That would’ve been your first… I’m so glad.”
Mia spoke softly and held me even tighter8.
