“T-That was close! What the hell was that just now!?”
The young man barely escaped death, rolling across the floor as he shouted. If that stone had even grazed him, he probably wouldn’t have survived.
“Momo, how did you know…?”
“I dunno! I just got this creepy chill down the back of my neck, and my body moved on its own!”
Looking closely, Momo’s arm—still pinning me down—was covered in goosebumps. It must have been some kind of primal instinct. For once, that bad habit of reacting without thinking worked in her favor.
“Hmm… so the Foolish Pink saved you, huh? Idiot Black.”
“Foolish Pink!?”
“Idiot Black!?”
“This isn’t the time to be worrying about that, Outlander duo! We don’t know what we’re dealing with—get some distance first!”
“The Pathetic White speaks sense. I’ll be sure to hit you this time.”
“You two, get ready! That brat is going down, full force!!”
“Master, that’s the complete opposite of what you just said earlier!”
Calm down. I can’t let a simple provocation get to me. Losing my cool could lead to a fatal mistake.
The priority now is analyzing her actions. Thankfully, she’s not immediately launching a second shot. Does she need time to prepare her next attack?
…No, that’s not it.
She’s just toying with us.
“Grrrrrrrrrr…!!”
“Daigorou, stay back! Don’t get close to War!”
“Oh? A brave little pup, aren’t you? Even after witnessing that, you still dare to growl at me?”
Following orders to protect his master, Daigorou stepped in front of Momo, shielding her. Baring its sharp fangs, it let out a deep, menacing growl.
But the girl remained completely unfazed. In fact, she strode toward him with utter leisure.
“Woof! Woof woof!!”
“A strong-looking golem, indeed. Its fangs can tear through human flesh with ease, and its claws slice through iron armor like paper.”
“Th-That’s not true! Daigorou would never do that!”
“No—Thus, it is a weapon.”
“Woof—Whaaagh!?!”
The moment the girl’s hand brushed against Daigorou’s snout as it lunged at her, its metal body suddenly jolted. The ferocity that had driven it to sink its fangs into her throat instantly vanished, and it collapsed on the spot.
It looked as if it had sworn loyalty to the girl as its new master.
“D-Daigorou…?”
“…! Wait—don’t go near him!!”
“GRAAAAAAHHH!!”
Just as Momo reached out to it, the young man yanked her back—just in time. In the next instant, Daigorou, oil dripping from its maw, lunged at Momo, its jaws snapping at empty air where she had just been.
“Gga… GAGAGAGAGA—!!”
“Daigorou!?”
“Hm, how unfortunate. I thought I could at least take an arm.”
“…Momo, get back. That golem is under her control now.”
Daigorou’s entire body convulsed violently, leaking oil as it let out distorted, mechanical noises.
Anyone could see something was horribly wrong. More than anything, it had attacked Momo—its designated master. It was clear: the moment that girl touched it, she had rewritten its control system.
“Saint, can you destroy that golem?”
“If it’s just destroying it, I can probably manage fine… but damn, this is gonna hurt my conscience.”
“A-Are we really going to… destroy Daigorou…?”
“Momo, I’m sorry, but we can’t afford to show mercy here. Besides, if we retrieve its core, we can restore it. You need to steel yourself.”
“Ugh…! O-Okay!!”
Though her voice wavered, tears welling in her eyes, Momo clenched her fists and faced Daigorou head-on.
Her ability to switch gears quickly was one of her strengths.
In a simple one-on-one fight, Momo wouldn’t lose—but if Daigorou had been enhanced like that stone had… then things could get dangerous.
“War, was it. That phrase you spoke earlier—was that the chant for a unique magecraft?”
“It is similar, yet fundamentally different. Our words trace back to something far more primordial.”
“Primordial, huh? Big words, considering you play with nothing but junk like that.”
“…It seems I’ve spoken too much. Go.”
“GRRRRRAAAAAAGH!!”
With an earsplitting burst of static noise, Daigorou leapt. Its movements were noticeably faster than before, more precise—so much so that instead of targeting Momo, it slipped right past her and went straight for me.
But just as Daigorou’s claws were about to tear into me— its body suddenly twisted midair, its attack missing completely as it clawed at empty space.
“…? What did you just do?”
“Oh? You didn’t notice? Then I think I’ll call you Blockhead Blue!”
“Wow, Master, you’re really holding a grudge over that one!”
She wasn’t the only one with tricks up their sleeve—I had already made my move.
“I’m the kind of person who believes in paying back what’s been done to me. First, I’m taking back that golem you stole, thief.”
“…You’re seriously annoying, you know that? If you wanna die so bad, I’ll just kill you first.”
