The three of them arrived at a room with tables, chairs, and a blackboard. Kanata and Sakura sat down in the chairs and Dace distributed pens and paper to them.

“Ho~! Let’s introduce ourselves once more. I am Dace Amorn. Little old me’s job is to act as this country’s seeress.”
“I am Sakura.”
“I’m Kanata.”

“Ho~, then I’ll first teach you dearies about what’s normal in this world, how it works, and about its history. Is that alright with you?”
“Yes, please do.”

When she heard that reply, Dace nodded with a satisfied expression and started explaining how she’d go about teaching the kids.

“Well… As I’ve mentioned several times already, I am a seeress. I possess a special SK2 skill that gives me the power to see the future. You do know what SK2 skills are, don’t you?”

The kids nodded.

“And other than that, little old me also has another SK2 skill that allows me to read the mind of someone. If I combine this with my predictions, I can infer what you dearies want to know, and teach it to you1. Are you still with me?”
“Yes, we are.”

Kanata had first thought of Dace as a suspicious older girl, who talked in a weird manner, but it was a relief for him, that she seemed to have a proper teaching method. Sakura wasn’t thinking about anything specific and was instead focusing on what Dace told them.

“Hrm, good. Then let’s start teaching you. First of all…”

Dace spent several hours explaining the common sense and other things about this world in a manner that made it easy for the kids to grasp the most important parts. She taught them about the adventurer system, dungeon rules, magic beasts, money, differences to Japan… and so on, and so on.

Sakura, who was rather smart from the beginning, easily absorbed everything Dace taught them. That was also because when Dace found out that Sakura was blind, she even devised a new teaching method for her.

Kanata wasn’t poor at studying and in addition to that, hearing about what was normal in another world tickled a fancy in the back of his mind, so he absorbed all that knowledge, as if he was learning how to play a video game.

“And with this we are done for today. You dearies have some amazing focus… Young kids are good at absorbing knowledge. Do you have any final questions?”
“Yes, teacher.”
“What is it, Kanata?”

Both Kanata and Sakura had already taken to address Dace as “teacher”.

“I think that in this world… levels, SKP, and STP are regarded way too lightly… I was wondering why?” he asked her.
“Hm, is that so? Your level, as you might know, is something that rises by itself when you defeat magic beasts on a daily basis… Most humans stay at level 1 for their whole lives, you see. I don’t really understand your doubts. SK1 skills improve naturally, so it’s not a hindrance in your daily life…”
“I see, thank you very much.”

The two kids got up from their chairs, gave a bow, and were about to leave the classroom to go back to their own room.

“Say, Sakura,” Dace called out to her. “You wouldn’t happen to have any worries, my dear? …About your clothes.”
“Oh… Yes! You’re right… They show a bit too much skin…”
“Hrm, is that so? I think they are normal, but… Well, since you don’t like them, should little old me ask the king to give you some that are a little less exposing?”
“Oh, thank you so much!”

“That’s alright, and also…” When Dace looked at the two of them, she seemed a bit bashful. “About what happened to you, my dearies… I won’t say… no, I don’t know much, but what happened once will happen twice, and what happened twice will happen thrice. Try to be kind to each other. Especially at night.”
“…Huh? Understood.”

The two kids returned to their own room. It was already 22:10 in the evening. During class, they ended up forgetting about what happened last night before they knew it. They changed into their pajamas, sat down on the sofa, and talked about this day’s events.

“We learned lots of things, didn’t we?” Sakura mused.
“Yep. Though that woman’s manner of speaking is a bit weird.”
“Right, don’t know since I couldn’t see her, but how old is she? I couldn’t find it out just from her voice, but I’d put her around 50?”
“No… She looks like she’s in the latter half of her twenties.”
“Huh… She talks as if she’s much older, doesn’t she?”
“Yup, close to 90% of her predictions were also correct, and I think she has quite a lot of influence.”

Kanata drank a sip from the hot chocolate2 the maid had brought them.

“By the way, what do you think about those dungeons? Teacher Dace told us, that when you leave a dungeon, all the defeated magic beasts will be revived3…”
“What~? Are you thinking of something weird, Kanata?”

Sakura turned to Kanata with her head inclined, as she asked him that. To hide his embarrassment, he averted his face.

“W-Well… I was just thinking that if it was my brother, he’d absolutely go in and out for hundreds, or even thousands of times.”
“Yeah, Ayumu would absolutely do that.”
“I really don’t like that inefficient playstyle he used, but… In this world, I was thinking we might rely on it.
“…For some reason, today was a wonderful day. You appeared pretty reliable, Kanata. That’s rare.”

If she were to voice her true thoughts, she’d say that Kanata was always reliable, but she changed the topic again to hide her embarrassment.

“At… at any rate, we should go to sleep.”
“You’re right… let me think… Ah!” Kanata had just recalled something. What happened last night, to be specific. “I’ll sleep on the sofa, then…”
“Huh? Why would you… Oh!” Sakura had remembered it too. “N-No, it’s fine, you know! I’ll sleep on the sofa! Look, Kanata… I have a lot on my mind, so you can sleep on the bed, alright?”
“Absolutely not, that is… erm… It’s normal for the girl to sleep on the bed, while I, as a boy, sleep on the sofa, isn’t it?”
“My, what a gentleman you are!”
“I shall always be a gentleman for you, don’t you know…? Well, at any rate, I’ll be sleeping on the sofa, so… good night.”
“Aw~, jeez, this is getting nowhere, you idiot!”

“…H-How did it turn out like this?”

Kanata was frozen in a situation where he was unable to move his arms and rub his tired eyes. While being entangled with his childhood friend on the bed.

TL notes:
Dace is an interesting character. While the washi loli (washi is the pronoun old people use to refer to themselves in Japanese) is a common trope, she seems to have the experience to back up her manner of speaking, and we also know that skills exist that slow or even halt aging.

Kanata mentions that her predictions are almost always accurate, but she failed to predict that Shuu would be with them and also apparently didn’t stop the king from threatening them even though it would have been easy to get Kanata to cooperate with peaceful means.

Add to all that her clout with the king and the country, and that she can literally read minds, which makes it much easier to manipulate people, so she does appear somewhat suspicious.

Footnotes:

  1. As someone who tried his hand at teaching before, that sounds both useful and completely disillusioning. Sure, you can learn what the students don’t understand and improve your teaching method, but you’ll also be bombarded by their indifference and insults they think about you.
  2. A few chapters ago, there was a comment that you need normal chocolate to make the cocoa powder for hot chocolate. Back then, I wasn’t sure if the author maybe meant some other product from cocoa beans, but this pretty much confirms it. So, either the author never learned this fact about cocoa, or chocolate never got popular in Anazumu.
  3. I always assumed that this was simply not well known in Anazumu, so people didn’t farm dungeons for exp on a regular basis, but apparently people simply don’t want to level up, whether it be efficient or not.
