“…Really?”
“I mean, it’s obvious when you think about it.”

According to Kanata’s hypothesis, Mr. Mitsuo was pretty much guaranteed to be the Guide. First, 100 years ago was a period where he was supposedly asleep. Next were his performance skills – likely circus techniques – and finally the fact that he went to the Mephilad Kingdom. With this, it was pretty much certain. I mean, it was just as he theorized.

Just why didn’t I think of that? At the time, it didn’t seem urgent, so I didn’t try to catalogue all the information King Rama gave us. I wasn’t nearly as smart as my brother, but if we went simply by IQ, then I should’ve been several dozens of points above the average. Enough to join an organization limited to people with high IQs… Before I started to study in Anazumu, I managed above average grades at school while mostly playing video games and putting in barely any effort. I was an idiot.

“Of all the possibilities, it had to be the absolute worst.”
“True, since right now…”
“The circus performs in this area. Now of all things… It couldn’t have been any worse… Woof~.”

The dread Kanata had displayed earlier spread to the others. Indeed, this was the worst case.

Why did it end up like this… hang on… on second thought, isn’t this mostly my fault? I was the one who sent Mr. Mitsuo back to Earth, and if I had listened more closely to King Rama, we might’ve been able to take various measures earlier.

“Sorry, everyone. I’m truly sorry.”
“Huh? Why do you say that, Ayumu?”
“Uhm… this is largely my fault. That the worst possible situation came to pass… After all-”

I apologized for what I saw as my failings. My reckless actions led to this situation, so I had to repent for them.

“But most of that was unavoidable, Bro. It’s in the past now and there aren’t many people in the first place who are able to listen seriously to what amounts to someone’s bragging or to abandon a fellow countryman who wants to return to his home.”
“I’m sorry…”
“Geez… it’s not like it’s all your fault,” Mika added as she caressed my head.

“Still… we can’t do anything as we are if the evil god has come back to life. Magic is unusable and we definitely can’t pull out secret moves that leave craters in the ground just by punching. Even if the few skills we can use in our daily life would make us look like superheroes to normal people… they only go so far. They wouldn’t get us anywhere with a monster on the level of an evil god. I estimate more than an 80% chance of it having resurrected at this point.”

I couldn’t even complain about this estimation since it seemed sound.

“Maybe an evil god would be just as restricted as we are, here?” Shuu interjected.
“I can’t say at this point, but if that was the case, human weapons might suffice to take it down.”
“But if it resurrected here, this whole area might turn into a war zone.”

It was true, the possibility of the evil god being limited in power couldn’t be discounted. But with Kanata not giving the idea much thought, he probably thought it unlikely. After all, our enemy was a deity.

“Hah… what should we do?”
“Hm… what indeed.”

Sakura, likely sensing Kanata, who was usually so determined, being in such low spirits, took the boy’s hand and gave him a hug. He stopped his monological musings and met her eyes.

“If the evil god has already come back to life and we have nothing left but to wait for our ends, Sakura…”
“What then?”
“Won’t you marry me?”

The sudden proposal took not only Sakura but all of us by surprise.

“We can’t, we’re only 14, right?”
“No, it should be possible if we claim we’re already engaged and put in an application at the public office.”
“I… I guess…” Sakura concluded after thinking for a bit. “Alright, but only if the worst comes to pass.”
“Woo-hoo, thank you.”
“I-If we really do that… uhm, we’ll do more than just kissing and cuddling… I love you, Kanata.”

The two of them were full on in affection mode, lost in their own world. Being able to act like this even in such a situation; it was just like us.

“…Should we do the same?”
“Let’s,” I replied to Mika’s proposal.

It might be for the best if things played out according to Kanata’s conclusion. That way, even if we died, we’d be united with our loved ones forever.

“Woof…”
“They’re right, let’s do the same.”

In the end, all of us were planning to do that. Well, it wasn’t exactly surprising.

“Still, we could escape to Anazumu, so it probably won’t happen.”

Now that he mentions it. But then we can’t have a wedding here.

“Plus, I was half joking so far. Bro, please contact Mr. Mitsuo at once. I doubt there’s a performance this late.”
“Alright.”

Huh, so he was joking? It’s often hard to tell if my brother is serious or joking.
Anyway, I should call Mr. Mitsuo.
